ANZAC Day 2021 The Ukrainian Association Sunshine (UAS), joined other community organisations in commemorating ANZAC Day on April 25th 2021. UAS members gathered at the Sunshine RSL cenotaph for the Dawn Service during which, President Andrew Makohon and Oksana Makohon laid a wreath on behalf of the Ukrainian Community. Members and families later gathered at the UAS Hall in Ardeer for a flag raising ceremony and breakfast. Our youngest members took part in raising and then lowering the Australian and Ukrainian flags to half mast, learning about the significance of the ceremony and the importance of Australia’s National Day of Remembrance. The Lady Mayoress's League, or Lady Mayoress's Patriotic League, was formed on 7th August 1914 by Lady Hennessy, Lady Mayoress of the City of Melbourne. The League was formed to supplement the official supplies issued to each soldier by providing 'comforts' such as socks and food packages, and by 1915 was the recognised agent in Victoria for the reception and despatch of all gifts other than those sent privately. In September 1916 it became part of the Australian Comforts Funds, an Australia-wide umbrella organisation formed from individual state-based organisations of this type. The reverse of the coin features a sculpted interpretation of the Legacy logo torch cupped by a pair of hands with the title text ‘Centenary of Legacy • 100 Years of Service’ circling the design around the edge of the coin. The front side of the coin features the Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse which will only be featured on coins made in 2023, making this coin even more collectible. These six photos were taken in the grounds of the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna in spring 1991. MAJ Ray Redman appears in his mess dress by the Roman fountain, serving a silver service morning tea to CPL Pat Drury, as a result of a losing bet on the 1991 Rugby League Grand Final. Pat Drury was a very keen rugby league supporter and followed Penrith, who lost its first Grand Final appearance to the Canberra Raiders in 1990. Penrith reversed the result the following year against Canberra winning their first premiership. He served from December 1941 to July 1942 in the Citizen Military Forces and from July 1942 to September 1944 in the Australian Imperial Forces. His reason for discharge was reserved occupation. He held the rank of corporal in 26th Motor regiment. He was born in Colac 19/11/1919 to Ernest Swan and Daisy Johnson. He died 04/08/2009 and is buried at the Warrnambool cemetery. During his life he farmed a soldiers’ settlers block in the Grasmere area, north of Warrnambool. The soldiers' settlement program was instigated after both world wars whereby land was made available to returning soldiers. Some of the land was Crown land and some was acquired. It was subdivided in 1914 and offered for sale as individual sites. Building did not occur until after WW1 and after the creek across Union Road had been barrelled. The garage was built at 145 Union Road in 1925. It has had continuous use as a garage since then. Originally there were petrol bowsers on the footpath. The façade of the building is remarkably the same as it was in 1925 when David Denholm was the first proprietor. He remained until c1950 and was followed by Benchley Motors P/L, then Spenden Motors P/L. John and Val Warren-Smith purchased it in c1980. In 2019 their family, including Philip and Glenn Warren-Smith and 2 of Philip's sons, still operate it as J&V Warren-Smith Auto Service.The Union Road shopping strip was assessed for heritage protection by Lovell Chen in June 2011 (Surrey Hills and Canterbury Hill Estate Heritage Study: Union Road Commercial Precinct Citation). Nillumbik Commissioners used 'reserve power's to permit a controversial Shell service station and Hungry Jackls restaurant development at the former Eltham Shire Office site at 895 Main Road. More than 200 people attended the Council meeting in the public gallery and protested at the decision. 32 personal submissions were made to Council's Planning Special Committee meeting whose members vioted 3-2 against the development. The Committee consisted of the three Nillumbik Commissioners and three community members (Jim Connor, Bronwyn South and Janet Mattiske). Chief Commissioner Don Cordell, a former Shell employee excused himself from voting and the three communbity memebrs voted against the submission. The other two commissioners, Vin Heffernan and Kevin Abbott voted against it. They then immediately closed the meeting and opened a Council meeting lasting just seconds to use special reserve powers to overturn the decision. The demolition of the former Shire of Eltham offices and proposed sale and development driven by the Commissioners for Nillumbik Shire Council brought the community together in substantial protest at the infrigement of ratepayers democratic say in local government and ciommunity assets combined with protests about inappropraite development of Eltham's Gateway. The State Electricity Commission Sub-Branch of the RSL convened a commemoration service for Sir John Monash on Sunday 16 April 1972, which took place at the equestrian statue of Monash at the Shrine. The MC was Legatee D.J. Simonson (President 1970 and great nephew of Sir John), who also laid a wreath on behalf of Melbourne Legacy, and the address was given by Dr. J.A.L. Matheson, Vice Chancellor of Monash University. Matheson spoke of the establishment of the University in 1958 and how appropriate it had been to name it after Monash, comparing the struggle to create a world class university with Monash's struggles on the Western Front. Appropriately Monash had been chairman of the constructing body of the Shrine. In 1923 he was approached to become the first President of Legacy, a position which he declined as he was heavily involved as the Chairman of the State Electricity Commission. Mitcham Post Office began in a shop in Whitehorse Road next but one from Elizabeth Street and Whitehorse Road. They moved to a shop on the corner of Whitehorse Road and Station Street with Mrs. Markham as Post Mistress. She had an assortment of items for sale in the shop. They daughter May married and lived with her parents and had quite a large family.
