Bookplate, 'Ex Libris John Gartner'
John Gartner was a fine printer and publisher, an author, a noted philatelist, and also collector of Australian banknotes and coins. He was born on 16 July 1914 and was largely self-educated, leaving school at fourteen for work following the death of his father. Gartner developed a strong interest in the history of typography and printing and was apprenticed at the Advocate where his father had been a linotype operator. Aged 17, Gartner bought a hand press and some fonts of type, and in 1937 acquired a platen press from which he set and printed his private press books, published under the imprint of The Hawthorn Press. Gartner had a strong collection of Australian bookplates. He also looked at the work of artists overseas and commissioned personal plates. He subsequently built an international collection with preference for artists who printed from wood. His initial searches were in Belgium and Holland.(http://www3.slv.vic.gov.au/latrobejournal/issue/latrobe-84/t1-g-t7.html) Resting above a sign inscribed with the words 'John Gartner', a coin depicts a knight holding an upright sword and standing behind a shield. Uniform - Buckle from Telegram Satchel Belt
Electrical telegraphs were point to point text messaging systems primarily used from the 1840's until the late 20th century. It was the first electrical telecommunications system and were sent by an operator or telegrapher using Morse code. Social telegrams were also encouraged and special pictorial forms and envelopes were designed such as the special purple form and envelope which was used when conveying condolence details during World War 2.(fn. Powerhouse https://collection.powerhouse.com.au/object/163103). There was a brief resurgence in telegraphy during World War I but the decline continued as the world entered the Great Depression years of the 1930s. Although telegraph lines continued to play an important part in distributing news feeds from news agencies post World War 2, the rise of the internet in the 1990s and the widespread installation of the telephones in homes saw the need for telegrams to greatly decline. When the Commonwealth Post and Telegraph Act was passed in June 1902, and a national Postmaster General's Department (the PMG) was established the responsibility for the nation's mail and telephone services fell on Post Offices. The Bendigo Post Office, built in 1887 and situated on Pall Mall was the central distribution centre for receiving and delivering telegrams and continued to deliver communication and postal services until 1997. Now a Visitor Centre, dedicated volunteers at the Post Office continued to demonstrate and educate the public about telegraphic services and the development of this unique form of communication up until 2019 when Covid 19 disrupted every day life, coupled with the death Ted Rankins (the last Post Master and a long term telegraph volunteer at the Post Office). This belt buckle was used on the leather satchels used by Junior Postal Workers in Bendigo to carry telegrams which were delivered by bicycle in the early years. The buckle is part of the postal collection donated by the Rankins family in memory of Ted Rankins.Circular belt buckle from telegram delivery satchel belt. Photograph - Port Melbourne Railway United Football Club, Premiers 1925-26, 1926
From William Hegarty's collection, donated by daughter Barbara Hegarty Gardiner. By 1925 Railway United were effectively the PMFC Seconds and were referred to in the media as Port Melbourne Junior Football Club although the Railway United name remained in use locally for many years. The Victorian Junior Football Association (VJFA) had been split into two sections. Section B consisted of teams associated with senior clubs playing in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) with unaligned teams making up Section A. Finals were played between the top teams in each section and then the two winners (premiers) played off in a final match to determine which club won the John Wren Shield as premier of the VJFA. 1925: Port Melbourne 12.11.83 def Williamstown 6.12.48 at Yarraville on 5 Sep 1925 to claim the B Section premiership. In the challenge match for the John Wren Shield played at the Motordrome, 3 Oct 1925, Yarraville 10.15.75 def Port Melbourne 5.10.40. 1926: Port Melbourne 12.11.83 def Northcote 6.12.48 at the Motordrome on 18 Sep 1926 to claim the VJFA VFA Section premiership. Again Port 11.11.77 lost to Yarraville 15.16.106 in the challenge match for the John Wren Shield played at the Motordrome, 2 Oct 1926. Yarraville were then able to claim the John Wren Shield outright and hold it permanently as a result of winning it on three occasions.Photograph of Railway United Football Team Premiers 1925-26sport - australian rules football, jim hall, bill wilson, ern atkinson, george murphy, bert roune (?), mick bragg, alby keogh, william (bill) hegarty, tom davis, bill johnson, archibald (arch) todd, port melbourne railway united football club, port melbourne junior football club, alby mowlam -
Melbourne WaterAs the Yarra became unsuitable as a source of water, several attempts were made to find alternative sources for the growing population of Melbourne. It was not until 1891 that the efforts to sewer Melbourne came to fruition with the setting up of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW), now known as Melbourne Water. From 1891 until 1992, it was the responsibility of the MMBW to safeguard public health by providing a sewerage system and a safe water supply system. In 1992, The MMBW merged with a number of smaller urban water authorities to form Melbourne Water. The seal incorporates the coat of arms of Melbourne and the United Kingdom, and the motto of the board 'Publica Merces Salus Mea', 'Public Health is my Reward'. Text around the circular edge and in banners below two shields. The banners have leaves entwined. Above the two shields there is a kangaroo in profile beneath sun rays. One shield is part of the Coat of Arms of Melbourne and has a hanging fleece (top left quadrant), whale (top right quadrant), a bull (lower left quadrant) and a three-masted ship (lower right quadrant). The other shield is part of the Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom and has three lions passant (top left and lower right quadrants) representing England, a lion rampant (top right quadrant) representing Scotland and a harp (lower left quadrant) representing Ireland. This MMBW key ring is of historical significance for its association with the former Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW). The key ring is in a perfect condition and is significant as is represents a proud organisation and represents the organisations historical development of services, a strong theme of the collection. The key ring is aesthetically pleasing while the coat of arms holds great meaning. Certificate - Royal Review 1901 G Rolfe, 1901
This certificate was sent to those who had been present at one of the celebrations in connection with the Federation of the six States of Australia in 1901 – The Royal Review at Flemington Racecourse on 10th May 1901. The invitation to attend the event was issued by the Government of Victoria. The certificate was intended to be kept as a souvenir of the event and framed. This particular certificate was issued to George Rolfe and his wife of Warrnambool. George Rolfe (1836-1919), a tea merchant from Melbourne, began buying blocks of land near the mouth of the Hopkins River in Warrnambool in the 1870s. By the early 1880s he had acquired 50 acres of land in the town and several farming properties. He used the buildings on the land near the mouth of the Hopkins River as holiday accommodation and called the property, Lyndoch. He improved the property by adding stables, chaff and bone sheds, jetty, boathouse, reservoir, water well and windmill and extensive gardens and he spent most of his later life in the Warrnambool area. Lyndoch today is the site of an aged care facility. This certificate is of considerable importance for two reasons: 1. It is an important memento of a signal event on Australia’s history – the Federation of the six States in 1901 and the subsequent celebrations. 2. The certificate was issued to a prominent Warrnambool person, George Rolfe and his wife. This is multi-coloured sheet of paper mounted on card. There are four black and white photographs of the Royal Review at Flemington and photographs of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York. The images include the Royal Crest, the shields of the six Australian States, a shield of Victoria with a background of flags, cannon and ammunition, two mounted soldiers with a soldier and sailor standing nearby and swords and bayonets. There is also much colour decoration around the edges of the certificate. The names of Mr and Mrs Rolfe are handwritten in black ink. ‘Australian Commonwealth Celebrations’ ‘The Government of Victoria requests the honour of the presence of Mr & Mrs G. These medals have been issued to members of the Warrnambool and District Caledonian Society (one to a committee member).
