The Ballarat School of Mines was founded in 1870. The book covers the first 112 years of the School's history. The school offered courses in engineering, geology, education, business studies, wool classing, plumbing and bricklaying. The School of Mines underwent some name changes and in the 1980s became affiliated with The University of Melbourne; it was subsumed into the University of Ballarat that (created by an act of parliament in 1994). The Ballarat tramways system commenced in 1887 as a horse-driven service and became electrified in 1907. The service ceased in 1971. The Australasian Gold Mine disaster happened in Creswick, Victoria in 1882. Frank Sheehan was the state member for Ballarat South, serving from 1982-1992. Norm Borchers passed away in 2008. Borchers was a Club President of the Sebastopol Lions Club (1975-76). He worked for the railways as an engineering employee and was long-term trade unionist (Amalgamated Engineering Union and the Australian Railways Union) and ALP member; he lived and worked in the Ballarat area.
