The Melbourne Legacy Diary/Contactor handbooks were produced annually by Melbourne Legacy. The books supply Legatees with many useful details and regulations. They include lists of current Legatees and contact details. A handbook is issued to all Legatees to assist them with their work with the legacy widows; eg childrens' education, welfare, accommodation, health. A quick easy guide to services provided by Melbourne Legacy such as bursaries, medical care, financial assistance etc for Legatees use. It was reissued annually for many years prior to keeping this information electronically. Many issues are held at 00305. Chapters of the book might include the following (taken from the 1956 edition), many of which are Legacy committees: Administration Anzac Day Observance Comradeship. 'Comradeship is an integral and important part of Legacy. From TROVE: Chronicle (Adelaide, SA : 1895 - 1954), Thursday 1 April 1948, page 8 Legacy Conference In Adelaide Addressing delegates from all States at a convention of Intermediate Legacy Clubs last week, His Excellency the Governor (Sir Willoughby Norrie), who was accompanied by Lady Norrie, said that Adelaide regarded it as a privilege to be chosen as the venue of the first of what might become a series of annual conferences on the general policy of Intermediate Legacy of Australia. His Excellency stressed that the objects of Intermediate Legacy were to foster the spirit of comradeship, self-sacrifice and service, and to establish a high standard of citizenship and a spirit of responsibility in national development. 'Anything to do with Legacy has the strongest support of Lady Norrie and myself,' continued the Governor. 'Membership of Intermediate Legacy is open to the children of deceased servicemen who have passed the age of 16. There is no upper limit, although in 1945 a Senior Intermediate Club was formed in Adelaide for men returned from the services, or who, ineligible for service, had attained the age of 25. 'A record of an intermediate Legacy Conference in 1948. This violin was played by VX30301 Dvr Roy Arnel, as a member of the Australian Imperial Force Concert Party, in the Changi POW camp, Singapore from 1942-1945. It is claimed that the violin, in its case was thrown over the wall by a Chinese civilian. Roy Arnel, a South African by birth enlisted on 7 June 1940 at Royal Park, Melbourne and served with 2 AASC Company as a driver. He was captured by the Japanese Imperial Army at the fall of Singapore in February 1942. There was more than one concert party in Changi as indicated on the rear of the violin. The details of the Dutch, British and American Concert Parties scratched in to the varnish. There are the some well known names scratched into the violin including: The English author and cartoonist, Ronald Searle; Australian entertainer, Frank Rich; and Australian Author, Russell Braddon. Mr Arnel died in 1982 and the violin was presented to Melbourne Legacy for preservation, safe keeping and display. Further research found that one of the AIF comedians, Harry Smith, had a catch phrase, 'You'll never get off the Island' which became almost the watchword of the prisoners throughout the captivity. Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways system of training Motorman or drivers in the 1960's and the information there were given on driving trams. Shows the training methods of the time. 3486.1 - also details "Dead Man Brakes"Thirty Three page - carbon copy - within stapled light card covers - Ballarat Motorman (Driver) Training Manual or Guide - not a formal title. On front cover is large letter "G" and words "To be returned to the inspectors office after completion of Training as Motorman" First four pages has index and covers: (A) Tramcar Equipment - electrical - items or clauses 1 to 28 (B) Location of Faults - items 29 - 41 (C) Tramcar Braking - items 42 to 59 (D) Failure of the Mechanical Brakes - items 60 to 67 (E) Tramcar Emergency Braking (Accident Prevention) - items 68 - 72 (F) Automatic Electric Signals - items 73 - 82 - gives locations of signals. (G) General Instructions - items 83 to 98. See condition notes - not in the best condition - needs careful handling. 3486.4 - ditto - similar to above, but 34 pages through to instruction 104. Added section (F) after (E) - "Automatic Braking - clauses 72 - 79, possibly an earlier version of above when trams were fitted with dead man controls. Held within a cardboard folder with a metal binder. Cover has been covered with brown paper and adhesive tape, but only remains on the inside of the cover. Item added 3/10/2007.
