This item is from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. It recognises his participation at the Winter Olympic Games in Albertville in 1992 where he was the team psychologist. 23 Australian athletes competed, participating in alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, figure skating, freestyle skiing, luge, short track speed skating, and speed skating. Steven Lee and Adrian Costa from Falls Creek were included in this team. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” with Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and George later owned the Red Onion Chalet. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. He had remained actively involved in Falls Creek and was generous with his time and knowledge, always an amazing supporter of The Falls Creek Museum and Falls Creek Village.This is representative of George Shirling's involvement with the Australian Winter Olympic Team.A framed certificate acknowledging George Shirling's membership of the Australian Winter Olympic Team at Albertville, France in 1992. This tie was owned by Walter Alexander Scott. Joined RAF December 1940 to be trained as a pilot, he got his wings December 1941, became a night fighter pilot after OTU and posted to 219 Squadron. Was posted to 603 Squadron December 1942 flying Beaufighters on coastal command convoy escorts, desert patrols, supporting Sicilian and Italian invasions (all from the N.African desert, then on Greek Island " Armed Rovers" until 10 November 1943, just at the end of ops, when he was shot down in the Aegean Sea and became a POW the next day 11 November 1943. Transferred to Germany he was in Stalag IVB for 3 months, before exchanging ID with an Irish soldier ,in order to get out of the main camp into a working sub-camp in order to escape. Post war Walter returned to Australia, he became "Citizen of the Year" in Werribee 1992 for his service to the community. In 1993 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to youth and to the retired. Manufactured by Austico Australia

The National Wool Museum accepted a donation from Brian Licence in 2022 of several mementoes relating to his career in the wool industry. Brian studied Wool Classing and worked for a decade in this profession before moving to Melbourne which required him to change careers. This Wool Classers’ Handbook was given to Brian in 1966 as part of his membership to the Woolclassers’ Association of Australia. Brian was a member of the Woolclassers’ Association from 1962-72. The Woolclassers' Association of Australia was a trade union representing Woolclassers. It amalgamated with the Australian Workers Union in 2009. The Association had 1200 members in 1997. The Australian Woolclassers' Handbook 1966-1967 begins with an orange cover. It has “The Australian Woolclassers’ Handbook” written at the top centre of the cover in green text. Internally, the book is typed and contains information which is of use for Woolclassers and their rights and responsibilities within the association. A selection of pages have been scanned to give an impression of the information within the booklet. The book is a 44-pages long.Printed, green text. Bonegilla operated as an army base from September 1940 and by 1943 was expanded to 848 buildings, including a general hospital. It provided training for small arms instructors, signallers, transport workers, bomb disposal and gas warfare personnel. In a response to the need to house the growing number of displaced persons coming to Australia, the Bonegilla Reception and Training Centre began operating in 1947. For some time it was a shared facility but the Army withdrew temporarily from Bonegilla in 1949, whilst still retaining ownership of the site. From 1949-65 Bonegilla Reception and Training Centre operated without a military presence. However, in the late 1960s and Australia’s commitments to the Vietnam War and pressed by the need to find accommodation to train men, especially National Servicemen, the Army negotiated with the Department of Immigration to take over several blocks at Bonegilla in 1965. Thirty-five huts were acquired by the Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps as a Recruit Training Centre in which National Servicemen and recruits could attend 10-week ordnance courses. Shortly afterwards additional huts were acquired by the School of Military Survey, which established field-survey practical training areas and special astronomical observation sites as it began conducting courses in surveying. Instructors and trainees co-located at Bonegilla with migrant reception centre. In 1971 the Reception Centre closed and the site reverted to the Army. Progressively after 1971 the Army undertook a major site redevelopment with the construction of Latchford Barracks as the Army Apprentice School. Later Latchford Barracks was redeveloped into part of the Army Logistic Training Centre. Block 19 of the Mirant Reception Centre later became the Bonegilla Migrant Experience Heritage Park.This item depicts a heritage listed historical site located in the Wodonga district.A large poster size representation of the variety of buildings at Bonegilla, Victoria when it served as the location for the Royal Australian School of Military Survey. Dutch migrants from the province of Limburg started a Jokers Club in Melbourne choosing a "Carnival Prins" every year. Hans 2 was chosen in 1987. The custom of partying prior to the start of Lent was very strong in the mainly Catholic Southern provinces - Limburg and Brabant. The custom has lost some of its religious significance and is mainly kept up as a fun event.Brass medal depicting a Joker on one side with names and a date on the other.
