Journal - Schuss Vol. 19. No. 3 May 1953
Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski industry in Victoria. The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Items related to the Falls Creek Area in this issue include:- Page 88 - BOOKINGS AVAILABLE AT SKYLINE LODGE July snow conditions are well-known to experienced skiers for their dry powder surfaces, fast running and reasonable weather generally. The lower mid-winter temperatures are mainly responsible for the crisp skiing atmosphere offered us during that month. It is surprising therefore to find that bookings for July this year are unusually light at all Victorian resorts. Skyline Lodge in particular, with its good transport, easy access, and usually abundant snow cover has everything to offer keen skiers: at present there are vacancies in its booking list through the month. Flyer - Julian's Lodge 2003
Julian Newton-Brown arrived at Falls Creek in 1957. He had studied Pharmacy at Melbourne University. After developing a love for the mountains, Julian moved to Mt. Beauty and then Falls Creek. He worked for the SEC in the test laboratory at Rocky Valley reading weather instruments. By working several jobs, Julian was able to build a small lodge of 10 beds named “Arundel”, located at 18 Slalom Street, Falls Creek. The lodge is now the “Elk at Falls”. Arundel prospered and Julian extended it to include 32 beds and changed its name to "Julian’s” in 1961. When alcohol restrictions were eased in Falls Creek, Julian built a night club which he called “Big Julian’s” and later “THE MAN”. When Julian and his wife Beth retired and left Falls Creek, their son took over running the lodge. An active community man, Julian was a member of the Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce, a member of the SES, a stakeholder in Falls Creek, an author and a documentary maker. Julian Newton-Brown died in May 2020. In 2003 when this flyer was published operation of Julian's Lodge transferred from Julian and is wife Beth to their son Charlie Brown, a former Australian Champion and World Cup skier and his wife, Bena. This item is significant because it gives details of an important lodge at Falls Creek, Victoria.A colour flyer which gives a large amount of information about facilities and tariffs for Julian's Lodge Falls Creek for the 2003 season. Weapon - Cannon Ball, Late 18th to 19th centuries
This cannon ball could have been made as ammunition to be shot from a 24-pounder gun, perhaps a deck cannon or Carronade on a sailing ship. It is similar to those used by both British and French navies from the late 18th and 19th centuries. The iron cannon ball shows the casting mark around its circumference made by the mould during the casting process. The cannon ball is an example of ammunition used during naval conflicts in the late 18th and 19th centuries. It was made for cannon or Carronade similar to those in the collection of cannon at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum.Cannon ball; a heavy black iron ball with a casting seam around its circumference. Financial record - Document, Auburn Heights Recreation Club Accounts Ledger 1912, 1912
Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. References Barnard FGA 1910, 'Sports and Pastimes' in Jubilee History of Kew Victoria: Its origin & progress 1803-1910. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection illuminates two of the Victorian historic themes - 'Building community life' through forming community organisations and 'Shaping cultural and creative life' by participating in sport and recreation.Auburn Heights Recreation Club's Accounts Ledger for the year 1912. Coffin, 1920s
Guyetts and Sons is a family business that began providing funeral services in Warrnambool and South West Victoria in 1905. Today in 2019 the business is still in operation as Guyetts Funerals Warrnambool. This wooden coffin was used as a display model in the 1920s at Guyetts. Its simple six-sided design was an economical choice as it used less wood than the box-shaped coffins. This coffin is an example of coffin design in the 1920s in Warrnambool and South West Victoria. It is historically significant, representing a local business that began in the first decade of the 1900s and is still in operation today.Coffin made of polished wood with pressed, silver coloured metal decorations on top and along sides in several designs. Its shape is similar to the human body; wide at the shoulders and narrow at the feet. It has a six-sided base and a completely removable lid. Functional object - Kerosene Lamp, 1950s to 1984
The Kerosene lamp was one of the most common oil lamps used and was manufactured until the 1980s. The Anchor Lamp design was used for marine purposes in the days of sailing ships when a ship at anchor or sailing in the dark was required to display a white light on the top of its main mast. The Anchor Lamp's top loop was for a rope to hoist it up the mast, and ropes through the two bottom loops to anchor it in place and prevent it from swaying. The light could be seen by ships up to 20 miles away due to the magnification of the Fresnel glass lens. This lamp in our collection has a design is similar to the early marine designs but its finish and materials resemble lamps made in the 20th century to represent the older ones. The etched "20" on its cover could represent the 20-mile distance the light could shine, and the "↑" Broad Arrows could represent a maritime navy ship. The lamp is an example of 19th and early 20th-century Anchor Lamps fueled by kerosene and used onboard ships when at anchor or sailing at night.Kerosene lamp; This Anchor Lamp design has a brass frame, a handle with a loop at the top, a rail around the base two opposing loops, and a kerosene burner and tank with ventilation holes around it. A clear glass Fresnel 360-degree lens covers the burner. It is an All Round design. The brand Anchor is inscribed on a plate fixed to its brass cover. The Beechworth Burke Museum
Animal specimen - Crimson Rosella, Trustees of the Australian Museum, 1860-1880
This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. The Crimson Rosella is relatively easy to see as it forages on the ground or among the leaves of eucalypts, with its spectacular combination of deep-crimson, royal-blue and black plumage. However, not all Crimson Rosellas look the same. Along the Murray River, Crimson Rosellas aren’t crimson at all — they are yellow, black and blue, with the yellow feathering replacing the crimson plumage. In southern South Australia they differ again, being roughly intermediate between crimson and yellow, with varying amounts of red and yellow in their plumage. Research featured in the 'State of Australia's Birds 2015' headline and regional reports suggest that the Crimson Rosella may be declining in the East Coast. There are several populations of the Crimson Rosella. Red (crimson) birds occur in northern Queensland, in southern Queensland to south-eastern South Australia and on Kangaroo Island. Orange birds are restricted to the Flinders Ranges region of South Australia, while yellow ones are found along the Murray, Murrumbidgee and neighbouring rivers (where yellow birds meet red birds they hybridise, producing orange offspring). Red birds have been introduced to Norfolk Island and New Zealand. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. There are several colour forms of the Crimson Rosella. The form it is named for has mostly crimson (red) plumage and bright blue cheeks. The feathers of the back and wing coverts are black broadly edged with red. The flight feathers of the wings have broad blue edges and the tail is blue above and pale blue below and on the outer feathers. This particular specimen has lost some feathers in its plumage and its colour is not as bright as that of a live specimen.Label: 77a / Pennant's Parakeet / See catalogue, page 22taxidermy, crimson rosella, bird, australian bird, rosella, crimson -

Album - Album page, Lirrewa, 1-3 Lirrewa Grove, Circa 1972
This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. From Victorian Heritage Database citation for Lirrewa - HO39 Tarqua and Stables, 1-3 Lirrewa Grove Caulfield South https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/120932 (as at 26/10/2020) "Tarqua", now "Lirrewa", is situated at nos. 1-3 Lirrewa Grove, Caulfield South, and was built in 1886 for Montague William Langdon, son of the merchant Joseph Henry Langdon of nearby "Rosecraddock". It is historically and aesthetically significant. It is historically significant (Criterion A) as one of the Langdon family residences, comparing in Glen Eira also with "Rosecraddock" at 10 Craddock Avenue (1857) and "Hengar" at 356 Glen Eira Road (1889-90). It is aesthetically significant (Criterion E) for its capacity to demonstrate the stylistic influences prevailing at the time especially for substantial residences. At "Tarqua", the design acknowledges the prevailing popularity of the Italian Style in the shallow hipped roof form and symmetrical facade as well as the picturesque Gothic Revival style demonstrated especially by the use of pointed arches, fretted barges and the battlemented parapeted section. This latter style was particularly attractive to persons of means on account of its English precedents, the combination of influences being skillfully handled in this instance.Page 120 of Photograph Album with six photographs (all landscape) of views of Lirrewa, mostly including its garden.Handwritten: "Lirrewa" 1-3 Lirrewa Grove [top right] / 120 [bottom right]trevor hart, verandah, lirrewa, tarqua, 1880's, montague william langdon, italian style, shallow hipped roof, symmetrical facade, gothic revival, pointed arches, fretted barges, battlemented parapet, terraces, boom era, single storey, timber roof brackets, frieze, gables, cast iron ridging, lirrewa grove, cast iron work, caulfield, arches, parapets, gardens, houses, victorian style, caulfield south -
