A charabanc or "char-à-banc" is a type of horse-drawn vehicle or early motor coach, usually open-topped, common in Britain during the early part of the 20th century. It has "benched seats arranged in rows, looking forward, commonly used for large parties, whether as public conveyances or for excursions." It was especially popular for sight-seeing or "works outings" to the country or the seaside, organised by businesses once a year. Petrol rationing was introduced in 1940 as Australia, which produced no oil of its own and had inadequate storage facilities, had only three months’ supply at the start of the War and depended on the procurement of stocks from overseas and their safe arrival. Rationing was introduced to ensure fair access by everyone to scarce goods. The Victorian Civil Ambulance had a fleet of 40 of these ambulances which were sturdy and tough vehicles. This vehicle was in service at Davenport, Tasmania till 1970. The Sate Emergency Service then used the vehicle for a further three years before it was retired. The Ambulance Historical Society of Victoria purchased the vehicle in 2006. The bus is a Reo with a Giles body. Giles Motor Body Works was based in New Street Brighton and built bodies for commercial vehicles but not a lot of buses. Their half a dozen post-war buses mainly went to operators in Routes 1 and 2. Being on Route 1, the bus would have been red and cream." Black and white photograph of a collision, accident, between SEC Ballarat No. 14 and a motor truck at the intersection of Drummond St. North and Webster St. mid 1939. Note debris on road behind tram, showing possible location of collision. Official SEC photo, there are other photos of this collision in the collection. The vehicle is a 1928 Model A Ford type AA. The most use it was put to was on Mt Pleasant, but it ran also to High School as replacement for trams on Sebas if an electric tram was derailed. Perhaps the most unique trips it ever made was between Forest St. Wendouree to the Aerodrome, 1929, on the occasions of any ?? flight.
