This sewing machine was bought by Alex Craig's dad in 1942 for his wife whom he married in 1943. Alex's grandmother used it in 1942 to make button holes.Historical: Type of machine used by S.E.C.V. wives living in Mt Beauty in the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. Ladies made the family's clothes and sewed for the Annual Church and chook fetes e.g.. children's clothes and dolls clothes. Singer began to market its machines internationally in 1855. They began mass-producing domestic electric machines in 1910. Treadle machines were powered mechanically by a foot pedal that is pushed back and forth by the operator's foot. There were also machines belt powered, hand powered and eventually electric powered. Treadle machines were made into the 1950s but they were most common during the late Victorian years (up to 1901). This machine is c1894.This machine was owned and used by a resident of the Kiewa Valley. It was used for domestic sewing such as for making clothes for the family, making toys for eg. a fete and making useful items eg. a bag for school readersSinger Fiddle Base treadle sewing machine with decoration of flowers. 1920s voyage on the "White Star" from England to Australia.Historically a voyage from England to Australia in 1920s took a fair few weeks depending on how many refueling stops had to be made. Self Entertainment was a must.Boxed Jig-saw puzzle depicting the Cunard White Star passenger ship. approx 200 wooden pieces inside box Box is white colored cardboard. Top of box has a short 6mm wide cotton string to fasten the lid to the main box frame. The fastening mechanism on the bottom of box is not present.Picture of a Cunard ship on front lid together with the Cunard flags. The white star line. ... toys ...There is evidence of the game of marbles in the ruins of Pompeii and the tombs of Egyptians as well as early American Indians. The earliest marbles were simply rounded stones which had been polished but this was refined to handmade versions made of clay, stone and glass. It was in the late 19th century that mass production began and it gives testament to the popularity of the game that the Dyke factory of Ohio could produce 1,000,000 marbles a day. It was around 1915 that the mass production of glass marbles began. The game reached the height of popularity in the 1920-1930’s. Many were prized for their designs.The game of marbles was one of the most common games played universally, from childhood hence has a strong link with people of all ages and cultures. Five marbles in glass jar. All are various sizes ranging from large yellow streaked with red and blue, black striped with white, marbled tan, clear with multi coloured streaks and bright blue. Shapes are roughly spherical. Materials range from glass to glazed and stone. Three have pontil marks either on end.The lid of the jar has Nestle vacuumed sealed for extra protection. This cloth or rag book “The Life of a Bold AB on his Ship in the Rolling C” is a child’s ABC or A-Z illustrated book written in poetic form with the theme of the British Navy at turn of 20th century. This rare book is one of the first cloth books manufactured for children. It is likely that the book was illustrated by Will Kidd and published in London by Dean and Son, circa 1902, according to research of similar books. The book was sent to Flagstaff Hill as padding around the donated medal of Nelson Johnson for bravery at the time of the shipwreck of Eric the Red. This medal is also in our collection. The book was published by Dean & Son of London, established around 1800.This book is an early example of early 20th century children's literature.Rag book (or cloth book), child's book "The Life of a Bold AB on his ship in the rolling C". Illustrated ABC book with poetic text, telling the story of a young sailor's life at sea. Images are screen printed onto cloth pages. Bottom edges are salveges, top and side edges are frayed. The book is bound by stitching through the middle of the centre pages. Original red coloured print of front cover has faded. Theme of book is British Navy at turn of 20th century. These handmade skittles in this set appear to have had a lot of use as the surfaces of the skittles are well worn. The skittles have a hole in the top, indicating that they were made on a wood lathe. The game of skittles is played indoors and outdoors. It is a traditional target game or sport and the forerunner of the sport of bowling. A standard skittle set has nine skittles and one or two balls. The skittles would be arranged in a diagonal square pattern and a ball would be bowled towards them, for a given distance away. The object is to knock down as many skittles as possible. These skittles are representative of the traditional games played by children and adults over the centuries.Set of four wooden skittles, cylindrical body tapering inwards to form a narrow keck with a knob on top. Knob has two flat surfaces. The bodies and knob tops of the skittles sow remnants of wood stain but the bodies' surfaces are worn. The tops have a scored line around their circumference. The bases are rounded, with the edges off the floor.
