Robert WHITSON (1962- ) Born Mortlake, Victoria Robert Whitson studied Fine Art at the University of Ballarat (now Federation University) from 1980 to 1983, returning to undertake Honours. He completed a Masters degree in 2002 at the University of Ballarat. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Framed artwork which forms part of the Robert Whitson's Masters folio "Sacred Landscape: An Unsettling". The project was concerned with a visial exploration of the land of the Western Plains of Victoria and the nature of 'the sacred' in the landscape. Rosalie BONINGTON (09 April 1946 - ) Rosalie Bonington was born in Ballarat and received her early education here. A Music graduate of the University of Melbourne, she also completed a Master of Arts degree in Composition at La Trobe University. She currently lives in Ballarat, and works as a composer, teacher and church organist. In addition to occasional works for larger instrumental forces, her compositional output comprises mainly vocal, choral, organ and liturgical music, and she accepts regular publisher commissions in these genres. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.'Music for a Graduation' was commissioned by the University of Ballarat (now Federation University Australia) to provide fanfare/processional music for such ceremonial occasions. The composer's brief was also to make the music reflect something of the early history of allarat and something of an academic tradition. To these latter ends the tune of Charles Thatcher's ballad of the goldfields, 'Look Out Below', and the ancient university tune, 'Gaudeamus igitur', have been incorporated into the body of the music. The Ballarat School of Mines was established in 1870, the first of its kind in Australasia. It later became a part of the University of Ballarat , then Federation University Australia.A roll of microfilm containing digitised images of each page of the first four Ballarat School of Mines Minute Books. 26 October 1870 ... The originl intention of the founders of the School - as per resolution of the Mining Bord was to hold the School at the Mechanics Institite Ballaarat and to have special rooms in that building set apart for this purpose. The reasons for this was that the Mechanics Institute had already rooms which could be used for these purposes and the pupils had easy access to the Libary and Museum belonging to that instituions, but after more mature consideration it was deemed advisabke to establish an indpependent institution and obtain a seperate buidling for the School. His Honor J.W. Rogers suggested that an effort should be made to obtain from the Government a lease of teh Old Court House at a pepper corn rent. On 07 June 2010 the University of Ballarat Aboriginal Education Centre at Mount Helen relocated from T Building to the first floor of the Albert Coates Centre (formerly Union Building). The Victorian Indigenous Art Awards started in 2005. The awards celebrate the quality and diversity of current art practice of aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Victorians and showcase and raise the profile of the uniqueness of South-East Australian Aboriginal Art. The awards were presented at the Art Gallery of Ballarat for the first time in 2013.
