Leslie John Ellison was born in Horsham in 1920. He was the son of Charles Ellifson (1892-1969) and Lilly May Rogers (1897-!966). He became a teacher and in the 1940s he dropped the "f" from his surname. In 1949 he married Aileen Beryl Ervin (6/3/1924-24/5/2004) John was interested in history and specially in Christian church history. He recorded his thoughts and research in writing. John died 25/7/1981 and is buried with his wife at the Kangaroo Flat Cemetery. Lieutenant Des Martin was a member of the Wodonga Troop of the pre-WWII 8th Light Horse (Indi) regiment. He volunteered for the AIF, 12/6/1940 (VX31564) and served with the 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion in Syria and New Guinea. He was discharged 11/2/1944 with the rank of lieutenant. He was a horseman of considerable repute and was the author of the book “Australia Astride”. He provided valuable assistance to the 8/13 VMR Heritage Troop when it was raised. The first nutcracker tow at Falls Creek was the Nissen Tow operated by Toni and Skippy St. Elmo. It had a capacity of five people at one time and cost 6/- day in 1951. The tow was powered by a Buick engine and operated from 1951 until 1960. Other nutcracker tows at Falls Creek were the Village (left side), Village (right side) and the Dog Patch Tow, By the 1960s nutcracker tows were rapidly being replaced in the developing major resorts although a few rope tows remained in use largely to assist access over areas of fairly flat terrain.This item is significant because it came from the original Rope Tow, Nissen, at Falls Creek, VictoriaThe nutcracker (metal clamp) has two handles that clamp onto the rope when closed together. The clamping part of the nutcracker is at the end near the hinge. The nutcracker is attached to a belt via a short rope, and a small metal loop is attached to the belt, onto which the nutcracker can be stored whilst skiing. When riding the nutcracker, the rope attachment is worn to the front which can then be pushed around to the side whilst skiing. In 1936, the ‘Moorabbin News’ published Headmaster C.C. Thorold’s Speech Night address. Thorold delighted in the return to Mentone, for the fourth occasion after an absence of five years of the cosseted Graphite Cup for Combined Athletic Sport. To honour particular effort in the Championships, Thorold awarded this Athletics Cup to student Keith Weatherly, as “the mainstay of the athletics team that year. Not only did he coach the team assiduously, but he bore the brunt of the work on the day of the sports by winning 6 of the 7 senior events and by establishing 4 new records”. Supplement to the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin No. 2463 which discusses how the Club should be structured after 1979, dated 27/6/79. It notes that the number of children being cared for was diminishing rapidly and immediate action should be taken with regard to the recruitment of Legatees and the adjustment of Branch boundaries. In 1978 the number of Junior Legatees had dropped to 3103 and by 1988 this figure was expected to be 280. However the 16,654 Legacy widows in 1978 was expected to increase to 24,700 in 1993. The work was split between 15 Branches, but the adjustment of Branch boundaries was not investigated in detail. Athol Hodgson began testing of retardants in 1963 at Ballarat by dropping water thickened with bentonite clay directly from a Ceres CA-28 aircraft. In 1965 dropping a new chemical retardant Phoschek was produced by Monsanto All this experimental work culminated with two Piper Pawnees from Benambra, flown by Ben Buckley and Bob Lansbury, making Australia’s first operational drop of fire-retardant on a small lightning-strike on 6 February 1967. All tickets were available for 60 only tram trips, but allowed unlimited rail trips with 60 separate squares for a tram conductor to punch. Document produced by the Transit Research Corporation of New York, details the specifications for the Presidents Conference Committee (PCC) for a streetcar or tram for American cities. The MMTB researched this type of tramcar for use in Melbourne, taking out a licence for their production. This document dated 1/4/1947 with revision to 1/6/1950 would have been part of the licence agreement. Unfortunately, there were insufficient funds to build this type of tramcar. Only tram 980 which was based on a modified W6 class body was fitted with PCC equipment, later transferred to prototype PCC tram 101.
