Photocopy of an article in the State Electricity Commission of Victoria Magazine, Contact, Vol 1, No. 4, Feb 1937 titled "Electricity Supply and Tramways / Reconditioning the Tramway Systems at Ballarat and Bendigo". Each item had a thin strip of paper attached by staple to the top left hand corner, giving the Vol. No. details. The item gives the background to the takeover from ESCo. Details some of the work undertaken in both Ballarat and Bendigo, including the widening of double track in McCrae St to 10' to allow ex MMTB trams to run. Work at Grenville St - City Loop, the method of track laying in Ballarat - concrete stringers, welded joints, financial arrangements for the work - employment council. Includes replacement of trolley wire. Features photos of reconditioned track on the Eaglehawk Route and a caterpillar tractor. When the Commonwealth Post and Telegraph Act was passed in June 1902, and a national Postmaster General's Department (the PMG) was established and the responsibility for the nation's mail and telephone services fell on Post Offices. The Bendigo Post Office, built in 1887 and situated on Pall Mall was the central distribution centre for receiving and delivering telegrams and continued to deliver communication and postal services until 1997. The photo shows three Bendigo California Combination single truck cars at Charing Cross, looking southwest with the Alexandria Fountain in the centre. Trams 5 and 14 are in the view along with another behind them. The Bendigo electric tram system commenced operations in 1903 and given the appearance of the roadways and tram tracks, the photo was taken soon after opening. In the view are the View Point Hotel, signs for Moran Cato, Coperative Distribution, W J Jackson Tailor, The Age and several horse-drawn cabs. This clock was placed originally in what was called the "Billiard Room" of the Soldiers Memorial Institute Bendigo. There is no apparent connection to the RSL or Military service of F. Prescott. Frederick Napoli Prescott was a prominent Bendigo Optician and Jeweller at the corner of Mitchell and Hargreaves Street Bendigo. He was later in partnership with Mr C.M. Dawe trading as Prescott & Dawe. Mr Prescott died in 1913.
