gramophone record, 1950's -1970's
In the late 40s and 50s country music was very popular in Australia. In a relatively short time from the late 50s, rock & roll had supplanted other genres of popular music, dominating the city stages and radio and TV airwaves. Country music remained popular in regional country areas. This item is an example of music popular in the 1940's and 1950's in country Australia. The phonograph disc record was the primary medium used for music reproduction until late in the 20th century, replacing the phonograph cylinder record. Records were still the most popular medium even when new formats such as compact cassette were mass-marketed. By the late 1980s, digital media, in the form of the compact disc, had gained a larger market share, and the vinyl record left the mainstream in 1991.A 78 rpm black gramophone record. YCW Newsletter April 1971, YCW Newsletter, April 1971
Throughout its history, the YCW movement produced numerous publications for members and for the wider community. Some of these were regular papers or newsletters with high production values. Others were short lived efforts, produced 'in house' on low budgets. Reading across the collections, these public expressions of YCW communication provide insight into the movement's methods, the concerns of young women and men of the period, and how these shifted over time and across location. This four page document reveals the key concerns of the YCW movement in Melbourne in 1971; internal migration from regional Australia to the cities and road safety. It features photographs taken by chaplain Jim Nippard. Black and white printed newsletter with photos over four pages. -

Faced with the tension of being a parish minister and also with a special calling to communication through photography and the media, Knox chose to focus on the parish ministry and keep his communications interest as a sideline. He hoped that one day the UCA would establish a central audio-visual unit, not dependent upon a private person with privately-owned equipment.B & W photograph of Rev.
