He was a household name to two generations of Australians through his radio broadcasts and syndicated literary columns in several Australian newspapers. He was in Warrnambool early in the 20th century as the proprietor of a private school. In 1904 he left Warrnambool to take up a lecturing position at Melbourne University. He went on to become the foundation Professor of English at the University of Western Australia and later its Chancellor. Murdoch University in Western Australia is named after him. He was knighted in 1964. He published over 40 books. This book is of interest because it was edited by Walter Murdoch, an important figure in Australian literature and a man who played a part in Warrnambool’s history. In 1901 Murdoch came to Warrnambool, going into partnership with James Scott, the proprietor of Warrnambool College. They bought out Stanley’s Warrnambool Grammar School. This belt is typical of those used in the lineshaft system of operation, with one central motor sometimes steam but later electrical, which allowed the power to be disippated to a number of points. This belt links into Warrnambool’s past with the name of S Carter. Samuel Carter emigrated from Yorkshire in 1865 and opened his saddlery in 1866 in partnership with a Mr Roach until he moved his business to Fairy Street around1885. The newly constructed re-inforced concrete arched bridge across the Diamond Creek at Hurstbridge designed by John Monash. Eltham Shire shared the cost of the construction of the bridge with Heidelberg and Whittlesea Shires. The bridge was officially opened on 3rd November 1917. Frederick George Hurst of the Hurst Family, for whom Hurstbridge was named. Frederick was born in 1840 in England and migrated to Australia in 1854. He came to Hurstbridge in 1857 and lived for some years at "Allwood". He married Catherine Heffernan in 1872 and had three daughters. He died in June 1927, age 86, the oldest surviving member of the family, and was buried locally. William George Gray was born in Hazel Glen in 1869 and grew up at "Cleir Hills", Queenstown. He was the son of George Gray and Elizabeth Gray, nee Edwards (1843-1901). He married Frances Hurst in 1897. William and Frances would settle in Hurstbridge and operate Allwood Nurseries. He was also a Councilor for the Shire of Eltham. 1912-1919, serving one term as President. George and Frances children were Hurst, Sylvia, Clarice, George and Sheila. He died in November 1942, aged 73. George Gray (born 1835) was a pioneer fruit grower at Cleir Hills, Queenstown. He married Elizabeth Jane Edwards and had six daughters and two sons. He died in 1903 aged 68 years. Elizabeth Jane Edwards was born in Geelong in 1851 to Eliza, nee Murphy and Frederick Edwards. It is said that she was one of the first children registered in Melbourne. She married George Gray in 1864. They lived at Cleir Hills, Queenstown where George was a pioneer fruitgrower in the area. They had six daughters and two sons. She died in 1901 aged 58. Sisters, Francis Ellen Hurst (who married William George Gray), of Hurstbridge, Mary Ellen Hurst (who married C. E. Rankin) with their mother Catherine Hurst (nee Heffernan) of Hurstbridge and Ada Alice Hurst (1880-1910). Ada married Claude Pizzey of Diamond Creek. It is thought that this photo was produced after Ada's death and has incorporated a separate image of Ada behind the piano. W.G (William George) Gray, owner of Allwood Nurseries in Hurstbridge, with horses and cart laden with trees from Kinglake from where he also had a property raising stock. Shire of Eltham Councillor Gray donated English oak and oriental trees for the Anzac avenue at Hurstbridge planted in 1918.
