Functional object - China Plate - Australian Organization Services Canteens, Noritake, 1968
The Australian Service Canteen Organisation operated from 1959 - 1979 and served troops throughout Australia, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam by providing services such as canteens, bulk stores, snack bars, news agencies and bank agencies. ASCO became the Army Air Force Canteen Service [AAFCANS] in 1979. This included provision of services in Army bases such as the barracks at Bandiana, Victoria outside of Wodonga. Noritake is a well-known producer of a wide range of merchandise including high quality, western-style dinnerware for export. On January 1, 1904 the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in a small town near Nagoya, Japan. The maker's mark "Noritake N Japan" mark has been used since 1968.A china dinner plate bearing the logo of Australian Organization Services Canteens in gold paint. This is a service calling card from L.J.Kermond, a radio and electrical dealer and a servicer of these items. He operated from 4 Lava Street and later from 153A Lava Street and the dates found for this business are the 1950s and 60s. He later operated from Fairy Street and was well known in the district for his work in outside broadcast.This card is of interest as an example of the type used by servicing departments of business in Warrnambool in the 1950s and 60s. This is a grey coloured card (lightweight cardboard) used as a service call card by the radio and electrical service firm of L.J.Kermond. Very historical significance. Robert was part of a group of 500 Servicemen captured as P.O.Ws.at Padang Sumatra. The POWs were accommodated in 6 long barracks buildings that ran side by side. They were behind an 8 foot high wall containing a parade ground, sports ground, Japanese Officers and guards quarters. The POWs were put to work on the infamous Sumatra Railway.
