The Court House opened as a court of petty sessions in 1890 and closed as a court in the early 1980s. It is now a 'Place of Deposit' for paper based products, maps, documents and photographs, and the home of the Wycheproof and District Historical Society Inc. The local Craft Group met at the Court House between 1982 and 2010. The Buloke Shire Council oversees the maintenance of the building.The Court House is No H 1656 on the Victorian Heritage Register. It is the one of only two buildings with this listing in Wycheproof, and characteristic of the type of building constructed in the early days of settlement in Wycheproof. The architecture is of aesthetic value and although some restoration work has taken place to maintain the structure, it remains in good condition and with some of the original furnishings intact.Sepia print of the Wycheproof-Court-House. The first Presbyterian gathering was held in Wycheproof in 1876, this led to the organization of a congregation and the building of a church. The first church was in Charles Street on the north side of the Mount. It served the congregation for twenty years. The new church in Mount Street opened 06-09-1896 and after 115 years the doors closed for worship in 2011.A building of spiritual and social significance to the Presbyterian congregation and wider community of Wycheproof and District for 115 years.Small format sepia print taken between 1912-1937of the Wycheproof Presbyterian Church Complex. Designed on early English lines, the church dated 1896 was built of red-brick with buttresses and decorated cream-brick trimmings. The arched windows are glazed in diamond shaped leadlight. The high pitched roof is of galvanized corrugated iron. The Sunday School Hall 1912, of timber construction with feature trim of arched windows and doors and a galvanized corrugated iron roof. This sepia coloured photograph show the image of the former Bank of Australasia in Warrnambool. The two-storey building was built for the bank on the corner of Timor and Kepler Streets and opened there for business in 1860. It is now one of the City's Historic Buildings. The Bank of Australasia was incorporated by Royal Charter of England in March 1834. It came to Australia on 14th December 1835, opening in Sydney. The Acting Superintendent of the Bank of Australasia in Sydney at that time was David Charters McArthur. He was Superintendent from 1867-to 1876. The Melbourne branch of the Bank of Australasia opened on 28th August 1838 in a two-roomed brick cottage on the north side of Little Collins Street. Two huge mastiff dogs were kept in the backyard and let loose at night to guard the bank. The government also provided an armed military sentinel. Due to the bank's rapid growth, a new building for the Melbourne branch was opened in 1840 at 75 Collins Street West. By 1879 the bank had been upgraded to a magnificent two-storey building on the corners of Collins and Queens Streets, with the entry on Collins Street. In 1951 the Bank of Australasia amalgamated with the Union Bank to form the Australia and New Zealand Bank, now known as the ANZ. Then in 1970, the ANZ merged with both the ES&A and the London Bank of Australia to form the ANZ Banking Group Limited. The ANZ Banking Group Ltd kindly donated a variety of historic items from the Bank of Australasia. BANK of AUSTRALASIA, WARRNAMBOOL – In 1854 Warrnambool had two banks, the Union Back and the Bank of Australasia. Later, completely different bank businesses opened; in 1867 the National Bank of Australasia, then in 1875 the Colonial Bank of Australasia. The original Warrnambool branch of the Bank of Australasia was established in July 1854, and operated from a leased cottage on Merri Street, close to Liebig Street. The bank later bought a stone building previously erected by drapers Cramond & Dickson on the corner of Timor and Gibson Streets. Samuel Hannaford was a teller and then Manager at the Warrnambool branch from 1855 to 1856 and the Warrnambool Council chose that bank for its dealings during 1856-57. In 1859 Roberts & Co. was awarded the contract to build the new Bank of Australasia branch for the sum of £3,000. The land was on a sand hill on the northeast corner of Timor and Kepler Streets and had been bought in 1855 from investor James Cust. The new building opened on May 21, 1860. The bank continued to operate there until 1951 when it merged with the Union Bank to form the ANZ Bank, which continued operating from its Liebig Street building. Warrnambool City Council purchased the former Bank of Australasia building in 1971 and renovated it, then on 3rd December 1973 it was officially opened as the Art Gallery by Cr. Harold Stephenson and Gallery Director John Welsh. The Gallery transferred to the purpose-built building in Liebig Street in 1986 and the old bank building is now the Gallery club. Staff at the Bank of Australasia in Warrnambool included the following men but others were also involved: Samuel Hannaford, Teller then Manager from 1855-1856; W H Palmer, Manager from January 1857 until November 1869 when the Teller Basil Spence was promoted to Manager; H B Chomley, Manager from April 1873 and still there in 1886; A Butt, Manager in 1895-1904; J R McCleary Accountant and Acting Manager for 12 months, until 1900; A Kirk, Manager 1904; J Moore, staff until his transfer to Bendigo in December 1908; J S Bath was Manager until 1915; C C Cox, Manager until April 1923; Richard C Stanley, Manager 1923 to April 1928. The photograph is significant historically for its connection with the Bank of Australasia. The early Australian bank was established in 1834 by Royal Charter and opened in Sydney, Australia, in Sydney in 1835. The bank had many Australian offices in November 1877, particularly on the east and south coasts. Victoria had 45 percent of all Offices. The photograph has local historical significance for its association with the Warrnambool Bank of Australasia, which was established early in Warrnambool's history. It was Warrnambool Council’s first bank. The bank continued to operate until the organisation's merger in 1951 when it became the ANZ Bank Group of today. Documents and Photograph donated by the Woodhead family. Dorothy Edhouse was the only child of James & Frances Hill, who were Sylvia Woodhead's grandparents. "James Hill (Jimmy) came to Phillip Island in 1920 and purchased the Hotel, known as Woods Family Hotel. (Later, the Phillip Island Hotel in Walpole Street, now demolished). A milestone occurred whilst in his capable hands, when he installed an electric light plant, (32 volt), the first on the Island. He also made hundreds of cement bricks, when he built his own home. Later he purchased a building in Thompson Avenue, where he established a Billiard Saloon, with a small shop attached. He died in 1937, aged 68. His only child Dorothy Edhouse, is now 95 and has made arrangements to have her ashes added to her fathers' grave." This was added to the photograph of James Hill and Frances Edith Hill - not sure what date it was compiled by Richard Woodhead. Frances died in 1960. This brick was salvaged by the donors, members of PMHPS and former residents of Port Melbourne from the ruins of the Art Deco Mission to Seamen also known as King George V memorial building, built in 1937 by Harry Norris and demolished in 1995. Used in their former courtyard the donors, who recently moved to Docklands offered the brick to MTSV when they sold their Port Melbourne house in 2017.One of the few remaining tangible materials from the architecturally significant Mission to Seamen, the George V Memorial building dedicated in 1937 and demolished in the 1990s. The Brick adds to the MTSV collection of Port Melbourne material from the 1930s. See also Research and clippings folder and records such as 0641 and 0233. The photograph taken in 1988 before it was demolished shows the Art Deco style building also known as the King George V memorial Building, commissioned by merchant and philanthropist, Alfred Michael Nicholas (1881-1937) and designed by prolific Melbourne-based architect Harry A. Norris (1888-1966) in 1937 best known for his commercial work in Melbourne city centre. Architect Harry A Norris, one of Melbourne's early designers in the Moderne style had a strong relationship with the wealthy Nicholas family who made their fortune on the production of Aspro, a replacement for the German Aspirin when it was made unavailable during WWI. After the Nicholas Building on Swanson Street (1926), the Nicholas Factory in South Melbourne, and the mansion 'Burnham Beeches' in the Dandenongs (1931), the former Missions to Seamen building in Port Melbourne (1937) was a gift from Alfred Nicholas to the Church of England. “The new Institute will be a modern two story building in brick, with a high clock-tower, a memorial chapel, a hall for talking pictures, lounges, and billiard-rooms. It will stand in about an acre of ground between the two piers at Port Melbourne. The building of the mission has been made possible by a bequest of about£15,000 by the late Mr. A. M. Nicholas.” – The Argus 19th May, 1937. The building had a cruciform floor plan which contains a chapel, a large hall, other recreation rooms, sleeping accommodation on the first floor and a sundeck and living quarters for the chaplain and the caretaker. The foundation stone of the Victorian Seamen's Institute, which is to be erected in Beach street, Port Melbourne, was laid on Wednesday afternoon by His Excellency the Governor, in the presence of Lady Loch, the Post master-General (Mr. F. T. Derham), Sir James MacBain, Colonel Sargood, and Mr. S. Fraser, M's.L.C., the Dean of Melbourne, the members of the local council, Mr. John Blyth, and a large concourse, of spectators. Captain Pasco then presented His Excellency with a silver trowel and a silver-mounted ivory mallet, whereupon the stone was lowered into position. The stone was placed in the 1937 building then given into the care of the Port Melbourne Historical and Preservation Society during the demolition in 1995. Then it was placed in the bluestone wall in front of the building with the other building stones.The 1888 Mission was sold in the 1930s when the new building, designed by Harry Norris was open in 1937. The 1888 building is still standing but is now for commercial use (restaurant). Stanley Kennon originally owned Genesta House. It was sold to the Perry sisters, to Mr & Mrs Odlund, to Mrs Toovey Snr. and then to Mr H Billson who owned the guesthouse in 1935 - 36 when it burned to the ground.Front view close up of Genesta Guesthouse.
