2/1st North Australia Observer Unit 1942-1945 The Nackeroos - During the second World War the 2/1st North Australia Observer Unit guarded Northern Australia against Japanese incursions. The unit established positions in remote areas and carried out patrols on foot and horseback, reporting back by wireless.The unit was barely 550 strong, and with their headquarters in Katherine, in the Northern Territory, they were given the task of patrolling northern Australia to look for signs of enemy activity. The men made use of the knowledge of local Aboriginals and maintained coast watching outposts. As the threat of invasion passed, the unit was reduced in strength and disbanded in March 1945. Lilian (Lily) Thomas, 1888 - 1922, lived with her parents in Bay road Sandringham. Her sister was Dr Elsie Lilian Carne (nee Thomas) who was married to the Rev. T. Clemet Carne. ERNEST BERNARD LUECKE No 2104 enlisted in the 38th Batt AIF on 3.3.1916 age 20 years. He embarked with the 3rd reinforcements 38th Batt on 25.9.1916. He arrived in France 21.12.1916. Hospitalised with Myalgia 8.1.1917 then Influenza 7.2.1917. He returned to his unit 22.5.1917. KIA between 7 - 9 June 1917. No known grave. Hard cover paper pages containing minutes of meetings of the Golden Square Patriotic League. This organisation affiliated with the Australian Comforts Fund in 1919 as the Golden Square Branch. Lydia Pethard was secretary of the branch. The ACF wound up in August 1920 and the local branch dispensed of its assets on 18 August 1920. In June 1940 Mrs Lydia Chancellor (nee Pethard) recommended the minutes of the ACF Golden Square. The souvenir is believed to have been made by R.E. Hyatt.A home-made souvenir of Linton, which consists of a colour photograph taken in Sussex Street of the Linton Post Office and Bank of New South Wales buildings, with an early model Ford car parked in the street. The photograph has been mounted on a square of cardboard, and a border made of small green squares drawn or printed around it. "Linton" is inscribed within the border underneath the photograph. The square of cardboard with the photograph on it has in turn been mounted on a square of very thick cardboard, which has had its edges varnished. "My Home Town" and "R.E.
