The extensive fashion and design collection of the Kew Historical Society has been assembled over a number of decades. The Engineer's Department of the former City of Kew had an extensive collection of photograph of sites in Kew requiring documentation to inform public works. It also kept images of engineering practice in other parts of Melbourne, and overseas, that could be used as models for local activity. Many of these photographs (and plans) were donated to our collection in the 1980s. A number of the photographs are annotated, either on the image itself or on the reverse.This photograph, and others sourced from the City Engineer's Department of the former City of Kew, qualifies as an important record of local streets, public works, street beautification, and engineering techniques of the period. Original black and white photographic positive of automobiles and buildings in Denmark Street, Kew, immediately before the road enters Kew Junction. On the left is McKeon Motors and a retailer of Insulwool, while in the distance is the pharmacy on the corner of High Street and Princess Street (later demolished during the widening of Kew Junction). Notable are the bluestone guttering and what appears to be vacant land on the apex of the triangle of land bounded by High Street South, Denmark Street and Barkers Road. This site was the original location of O'Shaughnessy's 'Kew Hotel', and after the destruction by fire of the latter, the location of a service station. The Guild of St Stephen is an International Organisation of Altar Servers founded in England in 1904 by Father Hamilton McDonald when he formed a Society of Altar Servers at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in London. In 1934, Pope Pius XI enabled all Guilds of Altar Servers throughout the British Commonwealth to be affiliated with the Archconfraternity at Westminster. This is a collection ranging in dates from 1917 to the 1980s. It reflects a range of local and national organisations supported by people in the community. These include local schools such as the Wodonga Central School and Wodonga High School and local sporting clubs including the Wodonga Football Club and the Wodonga Bowling Club. Distributed to nurses during campaigning for improved wages and working conditions in the 1980s, possibly during the historic 1986 Victorian 50-day nurses strike. In October 1986, Victorian nurses began their longest strike after the failure of repeated talks with the health minister David White who was committed to reducing the classification and pay of almost half of Victoria’s nurses. Skeleton staff were left in the wards while picket lines, tents and caravans were set up outside hospitals in both metropolitan and regional Victoria. After 50 days of industrial action, Victorian nurses voted to return to work on 20 December 1986. The Royal Australian Nursing Federation (RANF) became the Australian Nursing Federation in 1989, suggesting that this button is from the late 1980s. Victor GREENAWAY (1947 - ) Born Sale, Victoria Victor Greenaway studied Ceramics at RMIT. He established his first workshop in Hawthorn in 1968, before moving to Ian Sprague's Mungeriba Pottery, Upper Beaconsfield in 1969. He studied under Tatsuzo Shimoaka in Mashiko, Japan under a Churchill Fellowship awarded in 1974. Upon his return he established Broomhill Pottery in Upper Beaconsfield in 1975, and in 1976 started employing trainees. He was a visiting lecturer at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design (GCAD) c1980. Hand-decorated wheel thrown porcelaneous stoneware glazed with semi-matt, silky white and dry black glaze and magnesium carbonate. The brushwork and banding is cobalt and iron with bronzelustre on-glaze bands. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Jan Feder was an alumna of the Gippsland Campus who studied ceramics on the campus. She passed away in the mid 1980s. Her student peers raised funds to buy ceramic works in her memory. Title of property shows the property was owned by Emily Henty in 1894. " Charman Dene" was Alfred Herbert and Edith Blanche Holdsworth’s holiday house. The property was sold following Alfred Herbert’s death in 1929. Mrs Champion later owned the property. Charmandene Guest House was located on the beach front along Lover's Walk. Cart was operated by the Briagolong Rabbit Suppression League. It was purchased by the donor at the clearing sale for Jim Kelly in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Jim was the son of the main organiser of the Briagolong Rabbit Suppression League. Copies of the Minutes and accounts have been obtained, and are catalogued separately. Wood on cart was in much degraded condition, whole cart repaired by George Parker of the Stratford and District Historical Society, 2010.Rabbit poison cart by T.H. Hicks of Sydney. Consists of wooden frame and floor 80cm high, wheels with cast iron hubs. Chain-driven from one wheel, operator's seat at rear, with a lever mechanism to control the trench forming attachment. Classes were held weekly at Legacy House and there was often a waiting list for the water classes, which had both swimming instruction and water exercises.
