The highlight of Tracy’s quest will be an open day at Fortuna, once the magnificent home of Bendigo’s Quartz King, George Lansell. This open day at Fortuna, on Sunday, August 26, between 10 am and 4 pm, will give district residents a rare opportunity of inspecting this magnificent building and its gardens. Kiewa is a country town located on the Kiewa River. The hotel was built to supply the local people and those beyond with goods. The hotel continued operating until the 1970s.The town, Kiewa, is in the Kiewa Vally. Lawson's store was a busy place in the 1860s supplying goods to settlements up the river valleys. Penleigh Boyd, Robin and Patricia Boyd's son, writes “Prior to 1950 Robin, like most other amateur or hobby photographers, took black and white printed photographs. The oldest slides date from 1950 when Robin and Patricia travelled to Europe on Robin’s Robert Haddon Travelling Scholarship.” In 1948 Robin Boyd was awarded ‘joint first place’ in the Robert Haddon competition for his design of Mildura art gallery. The scholarship helped fund their first overseas trip. Robin and Patricia were passengers on the Greek ship “Cyrenia” departing in May 1950, passing through the Suez Canal and landing in Genoa five weeks later. In the late 1990s the then Federal Government-owned facility was sold to the multinational Thales, which continues to operate the factory today. This Bendigo Historical Society collection of glass negatives includes some slides of women working in the munitions factory. Seven slides were included in an album that was prepared for Dr Edith Summerskill who visited Australia in 1944 as part of an Empire Parliamentary Delegation. The album included photographs of Australian women working at the factory during WW2. A copy of the album is in the Collection of the Australian War Memorial.Box 1 of 3, Glass Slide Negatives of the Bendigo Munitions Factory, later known as the Ordnance Factory and then the Australian Defence Industries. Each negative is sealed between two pieces of glass. The edges are sealed with thin pieces of tape. The hotel at Bonang was also known as Clancy's Hotel, Bonang, after its licensee, William Clancy. It operated from the late 1890s until early 20th century. William Clancy was aslo the postmaster at Bonang. A post office operated at Bonang from at least 1859. At the time Bonang was "a small, scattered collection of buildings marking the intersection of the Bonang Highway and the McKillops Bridge Road" ( from Regional Heritage Assessment 1996). As the mining activity declined the township became even smaller as many of the population moved to Orbost,, a larger settlement. This is a pictorial record of Bonang, a small settlement approximately 50 km north of Orbost. Henry was the son of John Morter and Anna Garrida, they lived in Holmes Road, Bendigo. The building was registered firstly as a butcher shop, in 1875 registered as a hotel The Norfolk Arms. The Bendigo Advertiser began a reader's recipe section in 1954. It was so popular that readers asked that some of the recipes were produced in book format. The first edition (this item) was published in 1955. The Bendigo District Football Association was superseded in 1913 by the Bendigo Football League. When competition resumed in 1919 after WW1 the League was composed of Eaglehawk, South Bendigo, Sandhurst and Bendigo East. In 1924 Echuca was included and Bendigo East was eliminated.
