Cup, Coronation, 1937
This souvenir cup of the Coronation of King George VI of England in 1937 was the official design of the British Pottery Manufacturers Federation. Good quality souvenirs such as this one sold well in Australia in the Coronation year and are collected still today. The Coronation was held in Westminster Abbey in London on 12th May 1937 following the abdication of King George’s brother, Edward VIII, in December 1936. The Coronation was celebrated with the issue of medals, coins, stamps, official and unofficial gatherings and the production of memorabilia. The Coronation was the first to be filmed and broadcast on radio and the first to feature an outside television broadcast. This souvenir cup is of interest as an example of the type of souvenir sold in Australia in 1937 to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of England. It is an attractive item and will be useful for display. This is a souvenir cup issued for the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in May 1937. It is made of white china with the body of the cup tapering slightly to the top rim. One side of the cup features a colour image of a crown, a wreath and the initials ‘G’ and ‘E’ and the other side has a colour image of King George and Queen Elizabeth, with a crown on top and encircled by leaves and acorns from an oak tree. The names of the king and queen are printed around the rim of the cup and there are other phrases in French around and under the images of the couple. ‘Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth May 1937’ ‘Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense’ ‘Dieu et Mon Droit’ coronation of king george vi and queen elizabeth of england, history of warrnambool -

Flag C.W.A, Mount Beauty CWA, circa mid to late 1900's
This flag was used by Country Women's Association (C.W.A) Kiewa Valley Branch circa 1950's. This was in a period when the C.W.A. was the major women's organisation which had the greatest influence amongst rural women (especially in isolated areas). This was a period when broad based communications were mainly by radio, women orientated magazines and the telephone. The CWA was an organisation that catered exclusively to country(rural) women's needs. The atmosphere was one of "sisterhood" and covered nearly all the needs of rural based women. This one organisation incorporated knowledge and learning targeting women who physically may be isolated but not mentally. The Kiewa Valley Group of the C.W.A. was a focal point for women in this still relatively isolated rural region and the need to have a place of refuge from the heavy domestic demands that family and business exerted. It was place where the need of a time and space to gain all the mental relaxation and group bonding necessary to balance the sometimes harsh environment that rural life presented existed. The C.W.A. motto "Honour our God, Loyalty to the throne, Service to the country, Through country women, For country women, By country women."This flag is made from dark green cloth and has the Country Womens Association of Victoria insignia embroidered on it in gold and white lettering. This insignia is contained in a circular motif."C.W.A." Souvenir - Personal item: Rouge holder
This is a souvenir of the British Empire Exhibition of 1925. This exhibition, designed to showcase the industrial and natural resources of the countries in the British Empire was on a 216 acre site at Wembley, England. In 1923 the Wembley Stadium was completed and the F.A. Cup Final was held there. In 1924 the Exhibition was opened by King George V in a first ever radio broadcast by a British monarch. There were Palaces of Industry, Engineering, Horticulture and Art and Pavilions housing exhibits from most countries in the British Empire. 17 million people visited in 1923 and there were 11 million visitors in 1925 when the exhibiton was re-developed. Wembley Stadium was reconstructed in 2002. This item has no local provenance but is of some interest because of its connection to the British Empire Exhibition of 1925. It is a good example of the type of souvenir that was bought by visitors to the Exhibition. This is an enamelled metal container, circular (octagonal on the outside edges) in shape with a short handle. The central area is slightly recessed to take a small amount of rouge (a red powder compound for the face, usually the cheeks). A pad to apply the rouge to the face is missing. There is a metal hinged lid with a clip and a small ring at the end of the handle, possibly to contain a chain for it to hang around the neck. Richard Beck established a consultancy as an industrial designer in London in the 1930s, designing posters, booklets and advertisements for London Transport, Shell-Mex, Orient Line and the London GPO. His work was illustrated in Radio Times, Evening Standard and News Chronicle. His posters used montage and surrealist techniques, as in this example, reminiscent of E McKnight Kauffer who was prominent in commercial art in interwar England. The London Journal Art and Industry reproduced a number of Beck's posters for the Orient Line and London Transport and in 1938 Modern Publicity's annual round-up featured Beck's cover design and included a profile of his work.Brochure for London Transportgraphic design, mid-century modern, design -

Book, Collected Essays, 1945
This book is a collection of the essays written by Walter Logie Forbes Murdoch (1874-1970), a distinguished Australian writer and academic. He is probably Australia’s best-known essayist and became a household name to two generations of Australians through his radio broadcasts and syndicated literary columns in several Australian newspapers. He came to Warrnambool in 1901 and operated a private school in the town. In 1904 he became a lecturer in English at the University of Melbourne and went on to be the foundation Professor of English at the University of Western Australia and later its Chancellor. Murdoch University in Western Australia is named after him and he was knighted in 1964. He published over 40 books. This book is of interest as it was written by Walter Murdoch who was not only an important figure in Australian literature but also has a place in Warrnambool’s history. In 1901 he went into partnership with James Scott, the proprietor of Warrnambool College. They bought out Stanley’s Warrnambool Grammar School and when Scott retired Murdoch became the sole proprietor and headmaster of the college. While in Warrnambool Murdoch wrote the Australian school history book, ‘The Struggle For Freedom’, a book which sold 10,000 copies in its first year. In 1904 Murdoch left Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book of 904 pages. It has a plain buff-coloured cover with gold printing on the spine. It is a fifth edition and contains a preface, 186 essays by Walter Murdoch and an index. Book, Victoria Illustrated 1910 x 3, 1910
These are three copies of ‘Victoria Illustrated’, a publication issued in 1910 by the Victorian Government containing information and photographs of places in Victoria. There are fifteen pages describing Warrnambool. One copy belonged to Bert and Henri Worland. It is presumed that Bert was the older brother of Henri Worland, the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1918 to 1949. Henri Worland was one of Warrnambool’s most important historians and was responsible for collecting much of the historical material that is now in the possession of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. He also wrote about Warrnambol’s history and was well-known in the 1940s for his 3YB radio broadcasts about Warrnambool’s history. His brother Albert was an insurance agent in Warrnambool. This book is of considerable importance as the material on Warrnambool and district covering the year 1910 is of great interest to historians today and is much used. There is a wealth of information on many Warrnambool businesses at that time. The connection with the Worland family is also of interest. These three copies of ‘Victoria Illustrated’ contain information on Victoria early in the 20th century and contain printed text, many black and white photographs and illustrations and advertisements for Victorian businesses. .1 A hard cover book with a dark blue cover and a pasted brown covering on the front and back cover. The front cover has white lettering and an image of a shield with a crown and the Southern Cross and the back cover has an illustrated advertisement for Buchanan’s Whisky. The inscriptions are handwritten in blue ink. .2 The cover is completely detached and the spine is missing. There are 14 pages missing at the end of the book. .3 The cover is missing with a photocopied front page. Morse key, C 1930
The Morse telegraph system had its beginnings in 1836 when Samuel Morse, Alfred Vail and Joseph Henry developed an early model of the system. There are a number of variations on the machine but the operating system is very similar in all and the language is a standardised international code which has been in operation since the 1860's. Morse code consists of five elements, dots, dashes, and gaps of one , three and seven units in length. It is still in use to this day and has been applied to other systems of communication such as amateur radio, mobile phones and communication systems for disabled people. This particular telegraph key possibly has post office or naval origins.Morse code was an important invention in world communication systems and this machine therefore has important social and research significance. It is useful as an interpretive item. This instrument sits on a black rectangular base of black bakelite. The mechanism ids held in place by three larger metal screws and two smaller ones on the upright section from the base. The movable part is metal with the attached handle a similar black material as the base.ADMY.PATT No 7681 KEY MORSE SERN PL 23780 Rocker Front contact.
