Letter - KANGAROO FLAT GOLD MINE COLLECTION: WESTERN MINING CORPORATION TO J.O. REYNOLDS, 11th June 1980
Letter addressed to D. McClure, M.L.A., June 11th, 1980 from Western Mining Corporation Limted. Letter outlines the plan to 'use a commercial elevator rather than a winding system for placing tourists into the underground exhibition'. Western Mining Corporation intended to make a donation to fund this venture but 'the money involved is rather more than we had in mind'. The original quote was $45,000 but is going to be in the range of $200,000 to $300,000. A two page file note on a telephone conversation between Daryl McClure and J.O. The ticket is printed using turquoise colour ink, with the ticket number in black ink. Ticket in the style of the SEC tram tickets. Tickets used for Adult Return, Child Return and Child Single from 24/12/1974 to 31/10/1985. Ticket collected at the time of first issue to museum (date 12/7/1974) and placed in a manila envelope for the archives. The first letter, signed by "All Het Up" pleading for the trams to be retained on a limited route serving Sovereign Hill and the Gardens and noting the tourist potential of such a tram line. Typed letter to Mr Richardson from Geoffrey A Lambert regarding Victoria Hill. He states that the Minister for Mines, Hon. J. C. Balfour has asked the Department's Geologist located at Bendigo to prepare a report on the Victoria Hill area. The Minister also points out that there are conflicting interests which exists between local municipal authorities who are seeking to have mine damaged areas reclaimed for recreation or developmental projects, while some would like the past relics preserved for historical interests among tourists. Document - S.E.C. - Falls Creek Tourist Hotel Project (Adjacent To Ski Village)
Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This item is significant because it documents plans made by the State Electricity Commission to develop the Falls Creek Tourist Area.A letter from the State Electricity Commission (SEC) outlining details of a site available for the development of a Tourist Hotel Project in Falls Creek in late 1962/3. The SEC estimated that by the winter of 1963 Falls Creek Village would be able to accommodate 500 persons. The site for development was up to 2 1/2 acres adjacent to the Upper Kiewa Valley Road. It envisaged a building able to accommodate about 100 guests. The successful developer would be granted a lease for 45 years at a rent of £300 per annum. Black and white print of MMTB Bus No. 79. This was the second tourist bus, imported by MMTB Chairman Bell from Canada in 1939. It was built by the Canadian Car Co. Because of WW2, it was put into normal passenger service in July 1940 and had a mundane existence from that time onwards. It was sold to Melbourne Brighton Bus Lines however they never used it. Bus has the destination of Nicholson St. Appears is poor condition. Has other Mark III buses in the background. All have PTC Copyright Stamp on rear. The Beechworth Burke Museum

The old Bank of New South Wales building is located on the corner of Camp and Ford streets in Beechworth, Victoria. It was constructed between 1856 and 1857 from local honey coloured granite. It was designed by architects Robertson & Hale and is a two-storey rendered brick building and the original coat of arms is still visible. The coat of arms is distinctive and consists of a kangaroo, emu, lion, and rising sun. The rear of the building was surrounded by high granite walls for security as it was the original home for the local gold office. Beechworth Honey currently offers tourist accommodation in the Hive Apartment located in the former Bank of New South Wales Managers residence.The Bank of New South Wales building in Beechworth is significant for its location in one of Australia's most prominent goldfield towns. Of particular interest is the use of distinctive local Beechworth honey coloured granite in its construction. The building’s architecture is a simple, conservative classical style known as Renaissance Revival. It is one of the few known surviving works of the architects Robertson and Hale. One of several Dandenong Creek marker posts inscriptions: "Busch's Weir was located at this section of the creek between 1930s to 1960s. In the 1930s, German migrant Hermann Otto Busch and his wife Dorothea moved to Bayswater and opened the Waldheim Farm Guest House. Busch built a concrete weir to create a popular swimming and fishing destination. The weir was a thriving attraction until the 1960s. Although little remains, it is fondly remembered by the Heathmont community. City dwellers would retreat to the guesthouse and wander down to Dandenong Creek to enjoy a weekend in the 'country'. Camera Case for Box Brownie, Circa mid to late 1900s
When this leather case was made it was the only material available that not only looked fashionable but also was able to absorb any small knocks or scratches which may happen to the mobile but still delicate camera. Digitalisation of photographic equipment for non professional use brought with it a reduction in camera size (pocket), increased portability and the dispensing of thick leather cases. With the increase of camera functions on mobile telephones, the need by tourists and the general public for a dedicated camera is rapidly diminishing. The protective leather wrapping for expensive, professional goods, especially electronics is very rare and foam padded aluminium bags and containers are the preferred mode for travel.This particular leather case has travelled to and from England via an ocean cruise by a now retired couple living in the Kiewa Valley. It is significant to this region because it underlines the slow transition from a purely farming, grazing, mining and tourist region to an area opening up to a specific socio-economical structure for retirees. This social and demographic shift by retirees will produce a greater need for changes in facilities required by an increasing aged population. Though it may take more time for cities and larger towns to come to grips with a growing aged population, rural areas(because these will define more clearly any imbalance of population) present the first demonstrative change to Australia, and world wide, a population based phenomenon.This item is a brown coloured leather camera case (Box Brownie Six-20) with an adjustable strap and associated buckle. The leather has been moulded to the shape of the camera and is slightly tapered as a closing flap fastened at the front with a lockable clasp. The end of the leather flap has a metal(tin) with a semi circular ring formed to allow it to be held as part of the clasp. Pressed into the underbelly of the semicircular closing mechanism is"PAT. 'Shiloah' was the home of Isaac Jeeves the younger - son of Isaac Jeeves the Valley Pioneer and brother of Ellis Jeeves. Isaac built this house himself using local timber he cut and split. It was ready for his marriage to Selina Leach of Bayswater in 1886. ‘Shiloah' was enlarged to take guests in the early 1900s. It was situated close to a beautiful fern gully and Isaac and his family capitalised on this by setting out walking tracks through the ferns. They charged 1/- to walk through and this included afternoon tea in a garden setting. ‘Shiloah’ was a popular tourist attraction but the making of the Olinda Creek Road destroyed the fern gullies and, by the 1930s, it was all finished.Black and white photograph of wooden structure with two wings and a central verandah. Dewrang Guest House is situated at the corner of The Crescent and the Mt Dandenong Tourist Road at Sassafras. It belonged to the Green family who owned the garage and coach service which operated from the site of the current Sassafras Tavern. Dewrang burned down in 1931. The Argus July 27 1931 FIRE AT SASSAFRAS. Guest House Burnt. SASSAFRAS - Sunday ‘Dewrang’ one of the oldest guest houses in the town was, with its contents, burnt yesterday. The property was owned by Mr J Green, of Kallista, and was occupied by Mr R Gros. Mr Gros and family lost all their belongings. Sandhurst and Electric Tramways Company introduced the first trams to Bendigo in June 1890. These were battery operated trams but it soon became obvious that the battery life was unable to copy with Bendigo's hilly terrain. The trams were converted to steam in 1892. In 1899 the tramways were sold to the Electric Supply Company of Victoria and in 1903 the trams were converted to electricity. After WW1 the SEC was formed and took over the running of the trams. With the increased usage of cars, patronage of the trams began to drop off after WW2. In 1972 the tramways closed as a commuter service. We have an original B&W copy donated by Ian Barkla and a larger one copied by Ken Hall. The Barkla original has a sticker with his reference details on the back. The photo records a Vintage Train tour to Healesville on 1 October 1966. The Lilydale to Healesville line opened on 1 March 1889. The last steam train on the line ran in 1957 and the last passenger service was in 1980. The line reopened as a tourist railway in 2010. Although the photo was taken on a misty day, houses in Windsor Crescent can just be seen in the background. It is possibly Lorne Parade in the background with preparatory works for the 3rd rail line underway.A black and white photocopy of a steam train. News Release from the Minister for Public Transport Alan Brown, dated 18/11/1993 - about the future of the W class tram, keeping at least 51, the delivery of the B class tram, and keeping a further 50 for supplementary service. The Herald Sun item by Damon Johnston quotes the release and Alan Brown, Michael Norbury, Paul Mees of the PTUA, Lou Di Gregorio of the Union. Notes the proposed expenditure of $200,000 on each of the trams to be kept. This chapter consists of in-depth case studies of two location-based games played in Melbourne: Urban Codemakers (2010–11) and Wayfinder Live (2017), both designed by Troy Innocent. These games were directly funded by government bodies in Melbourne to promote the city’s cultural and artistic life to residents and tourists. But its creator was given a broad remit to fulfil these agendas and used them to reflect on the city’s history, architecture, and future development. Item is part of the BCOF Association collection. Refer Cat No 7625This is a large photo album. The front and rear covers are made from wood. The basic colour is dark brown. On the front cover is painted a picture of Mt. Fuji, a Japanese village, a bridge and a small building on land, a tree and an archway. Colours are white, gold, red and mauve. It also has a very fine layer of reflective material - possible pearl shell. Inside are a large quantity of Aust soldiers in Japan - postwar. There are tourist type photos as well.
