Examples of Melbourne Legacy Club newsletters, covering the activities of Melbourne Legacy Widows' Club. Information includes a notice from the Chairman of the Widows' Committee, dates of meetings, possible day trips and theatre outings, and cruises. The ladies were welcome to attend monthly meetings, card afternoons, indoor bowls competitions, outings and tours, plus the annual fete and Christmas concert. The first edition of the newsletter was in 1960, previously there had been a quarterly magazine but the distribution was limited, they changed to a 4 page newsletter format to reach more of the widows. Various pages of interest have been added to show different news items. Photo of what appears to be a picnic in the bush with Holmbush children and legatees, possibly in the 1940s. In the second photo the matron is the seated lady in the hat sitting between two girls and is believed to be Dorothy Farmer, names of the children and legatees are not known. Also some of the cars that took them on the outing. Similar photos of another picnic are at 02347. From a photo album which contains photos of Holmbush and some of the excursions and events that happened there, appears to have been put together in the 1940s. Including trips to the zoo and picnics. Holmbush at 1267 Burke road, was one of the properties that Legacy used for Junior Legatees. It was purchased 1942. These domestic kitchen bags were donated to the National Wool Museum by Lila Gore. Lila donated Children’s Clothing (RGE 8324) to the museum in 2022 and at her time of donating, inquired as to whether the museum would also be interested in these bags she had been collecting. Lila said there was no reason as to why she was saving the bags, other than she liked the art works and thought they were too good to end up in landfill. She had thought perhaps she would make something out of the bags, or perhaps give the bags to a friend to make something. When Lila was donating the Children’s Clothing to the museum, she thought that the National Wool Museum would be the perfect home for the bags. Domestic kitchen bags such as these date from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century. They were used at home, usually by women, containing household items which would not spoil, such as flour, sugar, animal feed, seeds, and other commodities. In modern times a trip to the supermarket is a daily chore, in the past however, these trips happened far less often, with big sacks such as these a large reason why. In the rural US and Canada, Feed sack dresses and Flour sack dresses, were an iconic part of rural life from the 1920s through the Great Depression, World War II, and post-World War II years. Set of two light card, tickets for the 26 January 1981 Transport Cavalcade or "The Melbourne Pageant" for Australia Day 1981. 1816.1 - Adult Ticket 50c on light yellow card. - see images i3 and i4 1816.2 - Child Ticket 20c on white card - see images i1 and i2 Both tickets have photos of tram V214 on fare side and BTM/BTPS tram No. 27 on reverse. Both sides have the words "The Melbourne Pageant" and "Salute to Australia" and "Valid for single trip on special trams only 26 January 1981" . Newspaper clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, of Monday 20/9/1971, titled "Last trip by man who was on the first" in the Outlook profile Section of the newspaper about Mr. Charles Rollan who was a passenger on the last Sebastopol tram and rode on the horse trams on the Sebastopol line. Noted that a photo of Mr. Rollan was in the supplement Section of the newspaper. See Reg. Item 269. Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways in the middle of the 2nd world war - when the tramway traffic was at its peak. Gives details of working hours, tram operations and services for the week. Shows the additional trams to the basic service on Weekdays.Set of five type foolscap sheets - landscape format, along with a set of carbon copies, of the "On and Off" times dated 12 October 1944. Details the sign on / sign off times for each run or table number operated by Motormen / Conductors, where the first service went to, where it came in from if applicable, the number of trips it did to terminus eg G for Gardens, V for Victoria St and the total miles of that run or table. The Miles have been typed in red ink to give a column breakup. Sheets for Basic Service Weekdays, Middle Runs - Mondays to Thursdays - (additional services am, lunch, PM and theatre), Middle runs for Fridays, Middle Runs Saturdays, and Sundays. Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. In the 1920s, the photographer travelled throughout Victoria, including on the west coast from Port Campbell to Port Fairy. Trips were presumably made by train and by foot. Lynda Tieman and her team at the Port Fairy Historical Society have tentatively identified a number of Henry Christian's photographs of Port Fairy, of which this is one. The photo captures a man on a horse, believed to be Bill Digby, driving a herd of cattle across the Moyne River Bridge.
