Painting - Water colour painting of the ketch Falie, Falie, 1934
Arthur V Gregory b.1867, d.1957 worked from studio at 326 Albert Road South Melbourne established by his father G F Gregory in 1852. FALIE operated for many years as a cargo ship, largely around South Australia where it formed a strong regional association. During World War II, FALIE was requisitioned by the Royal Australian Navy for service, and was on patrol off Sydney Heads during the mini-submarine raid on Sydney Harbour in May 1942. After the war it returned to commercial service and was retired in 1982. It was then the last working ship representing the South Australian ketch fleet, and along with NELCEBEE ( HV000419) one of the last two working sail powered cargo vessels in South Australia.Water colour painting in painted gilt frameFalie off Cape Schank A.V. Water colour painting of the Katoomba, Katoomba, 1929
Arthur V Gregory b.1867, d.1957 worked from studio at 326 Albert Road South Melbourne established by his father G F Gregory in 1852 SS KATOOMBA of McIlwraith, McEacharn & Co entered the Australian trade in 1887 bringing immigrants from Britain to Queensland. They entered into the fierce competition for passenger trade in the first decades of the 20th century when competition for passengers required companies to provide more than converted cargo vessels. In 1909 their ship KAROOLA won a reputation for its salubrious accommodation and its size, and was the first Australian ship to exceed 7,000 tons. The company maintained the advantage in 1912 by commissioning KATOOMBA, which was larger and more luxurious than all its generation of passenger ships. KATOOMBA was requisitioned as a troopship in both World War I and World War II. It was sold to a Greek company in 1949 and sold for scrap in Japan in 1959.Water colour painting in painted gilt frameA.V Gregory 1929katoomba, a.v. gregory, water colour, painting -

Photograph - Framed photograph of Warrnambool Salt Water Baths, c. 1920
This is a framed photograph of the men's pool at the Warrnambool Salt Water Baths. These Baths were originally built at the end of Gilles Street on the line of the present railway line in 1876 but were rebuilt in 1889 further north in Gilles Street when the railway line was opened. The water was pumped from the sea, initially by a windmill and later by a gas pump. The men's pool was 100 feet by 50 feet and the women's pool was 60 feet by 30 feet with bathing strictly segregated in the 19th century. A building nearby housed marble cubicles with hot spa baths with the water heated on the site and a caretaker's cottage completed the complex. Men's nude bathing was a feature of the early 20th century. Originally built by a local public company the Baths were taken over by the Warrnambool Council. These baths were superseded by the opening in 1961 of an Olympic Pool In Warrnambool. The site and the remaining buildings of the old sea water baths are now heritage-listed and today form part of the headquarters of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This photograph is of historical significance as a depiction of the Warrnambool Salt water Baths in the early 20th century. These Baths were the basis for promoting Warrnambool as a health and spa resort town in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is a framed black and white photograph of the men's pool at the Warrnambool Salt Water Baths. It depicts men and boys swimming in the circular pool and one male on the diving board. All these men are naked. There are other clothed males and clothed attendants wearing hats and waistcoats. The change rooms are on the right side of the photograph and there is a fence with trees behind. The photograph is mounted on cardboard with a gilt edge and is held in a wooden ridged frame behind glass. warrnambool sea water baths, sea baths, warrnambool pool -

Food Safe, Untitled
http://museumvictoria.com.au/discoverycentre/infosheets/the-coolgardie-safe/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coolgardie_safe The Coolgardie Safe is a low-tech refrigeration unit which uses the heat transfer which occurs during evaporation of water. It was named after the place where it was invented — the small mining town of Coolgardie, Western Australia, near Kalgoorlie-Boulder. http://www.biggles.com.au/ The Coolgardie Safe was simply a wire framed box with wheat sack strips hanging down the sides, which were kept wet by the process of osmosis from a dish or small tank of water. The food inside the Safe was kept cool due to the principle that evaporation takes away heat; the wet hessian strips experience evaporation from the wind and the sun and thus you have a refrigerator. http://www.whitehat.com.au/australia/Inventions/InventionsA.html Coolgardie Safe made from galvanised iron with hessian drapped over 4 sides, rectangular on 4 legs. 2 trays inside, 3rd tray inserted in top as cover, metal meshing on callapsable sides and door. Stands in tray. The tray assists with pest control as it was filled with water.kitchen galvanised iron coolgardie safe hessian food preservation pest control water -

Animal specimen - Australian Spotted Crake, Trustees of the Australian Museum, 1860-1880
The Australian Spotted Crake can be found the south-east and the south-west of Australia. It is unlikely to be seen in Queensland or Tasmania and frequents much of New South Wales, Victoria and north-eastern South Australia. They reside in wetlands and are often found in dense growths of plants. The Australian Spotted Crake is a timid bird which flicks its tail as they walk. If disturbed, they may run away in a crouched position with their tail raised. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum and the National Museum of Victoria, as well as individuals such amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is a small, stocky bird with yellow legs and bill. The Australian Spotted Crake has grey colouring on its neck and an orange on the nape of its neck. The torso and rear are striped with black and grey/cream colours and have white spots along the rear. The specimen has brown feathers on the wings. It stands on a wooden platform in a standing position with a paper identification tag tied around its left leg. 19c Spotted Water Crake.
