Thomas Robert Jones No 1982 AIF enlisted in the 5th reinforcements 6th Batt AIF on 9.1.1915 age 23 years 10 months. Embarked for Egypt 17.4.1915, joined unit on Anzac (Gallipoli) 10.7.1915, WIA 14.7.1915 shell shock, burns to face, back, right arm, hospitalised in Malta 28.7.1915 then suffered deafness in both ears, hospitalised then in England 16.8.1915, he underwent a Mastoid operation re ears, discharged from hospital 16.3.1916, returned to Australia 24.6.1916, discharged from the AIF 8.3.1917 medically unfit. Item belonged to Mrs Eileen Pascoes father Arthur Castleton Clarke VX79039. He enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 5.5.42 and on discharge from the Army he was a Sapper in No 20 Australian Maintenance PL RAE. Refer 528.2, 530, 531. Her Grandfather William David Maher No 68 enlisted in the AIF 10.9.14 in the 8th L.H Regt A Sqd. Embarked for overseas 25.2.15 then for Gallipoli 16.5.15. He was hospitalised 5 times including Dysentry, Malaria and Pnuemonia. He was discharged from the AIF on 23.3.19. Refer 529, 533.2. All items referred to are Trench Art.Ashtray, brass, silver/chrome plated. Base is from a possible 4" Shell with 3 'U' shaped metal pieces to hold cigarettes. Allied military badges collected during the Great War 1914 to 1918 by Private (Shoeing Smith) John BLAIKIE 2341 who was born at Wangaratta. He was a Blacksmith and at the age of 42 enlisted on May 28 1915. He embarked on August 10 1915 and served with the 14th Battalion. He returned to Australia in January 1918 and discharged as medically unfit on April 10 1918. Inset photograph is of John BLAIKIELarge collection of allied military badges collected during the campaigns in France, Belgium and Egypt in 1916-17 by John BLAIKIE 2341. A Blacksmith who at the age of 42 years enlisted in the Army and served during the first world war. On his return to Australia he was discharged medically unfit due to rheumatism and senility.
