Sir William Gilliatt was born in 1884 in Lincolnshire. He was educated at Boston Grammar School and Wellingborough College, and began his medical career at the Middlesex Hospital in 1925. He became obstetric and gynaecological surgeon at King's College Hospital, a position he held until his retirement in 1946. Gilliatt was a foundation fellow of RCOG, U.K. and served on the Council from 1932 until his death in 1956. He was also the President of the RCOG from 1946 until 1949. Gilliatt was known to be an excellent clinical teacher and was gynaecologist to the Royal family for two decades. He wrote very little for the medical journals, but his influence on obstetric and gynaecological practice was considerable and his attention to detail was painstaking. He was killed in a motor accident on 27 November 1956.Framed black and white photograph. An inscription, likely to be the name of the photographer, appears in the bottom right-hand corner of the photograph. The airway was manufactured in four sizes - Infant, Children, Adult Medium and Adult Large. The use of this type of red rubber tubing was discontinued in the late 1950s when a thinner, more moulded rubber with chromium-plated incut tubes was introduced into public hospital throughout Australia.Airway tube. This stethoscope , or auriscope, came from the Royal Devon & Exeter hospital in 1958 when the maternity unit was transferred to the new City Hospital. Dr Walker in his correspondence states: "The foetal auriscope is from the days of modesty, came from the Royal Devon & Exter Hospital in 1958, when its maternity ward transferred to the new City Hospital and storage for memorabilia was unavailable." This item is similar to Stoke's stethoscope, or Barclay's stethoscope, as illustrated in Tiemann's catalogue of 1899. The stem of this stethoscope is, however, much longer than either of these. The stethoscope came with a letter written to Dr Walker's maternal grandfather by Dr. James Young Simpson. This letter was transferred to the RANZCOG Archives following conservation treatment by the Conservation Centre.A lightweight wooden stethoscope with long stem and a black ebony bell on one end. Paper card insert is signed by Louisa Mann who was matron from 1912-1928.Item is significant as it was presented from Louisa Mann. Item also carries the Maltese cross from the Alfred hospital insignia. Has been presented to the archive from Alfred Hospital trainee. Handcrafted wooden box with parquetry Maltese cross in center.
