Used in operating theatres, medical surgeries and hospital wards for storage of surgical gauze or theatre dry stocks such as cotton wool or towels. Large number of these containers were used on wards for similar purposes. These containers replaced the blue and white enamel bins from the 1900s onwards.

Steel surgical canister, with lid. Cylindrical in shape. Contains three gauze squares and a collection of cotton wool swabs, unused.
