"Two hundred men of the Holy Name Society made a striking spectacle on March 26 when they marched through the streets of Daylesford to the Town Hall for a Communion breakfast, after Mass at St. Peter's Church, which concluded a tridium for the men of the parish, conducted by Rev. Father Whelan, P.P. There were many "New Australians" present. Among the visitors present were Mr. C. Condon, Mr. F. Frawley and Mr. Hooper, of the Melbourne Diocesan Union executive of the IIolv Name Society, and also eight members of the North Melbourne branch, beaded by their president, Mr. V. Sheahan. The president of the Daylesford branch (Mr. J. A. Gleeson) proposed the toast of "The Hierarchy and Clergy," to which Father Whelan and Father Moynihan, P.P.. responded. Mr. H. Poulson, vice-president, proposed the toast of "The Holy Name Society," and appealed for in increase in membership. Mr. C. Condon responded. The toast of "The Visitors" was proposed by Mr. H. Lilburne, who referred to the unavoidable absence of Father Day, spiritual director of the society. Mr. V. Sheahan and Mr. Hooper responded." Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The word ashtray came into use around the 1920 and is a receptacle for ash from cigarettes and cigars and are typically made of fire retardant material such as glass, heat resistant plastic, pottery, metal, or stone. The most common ashtray design is a shallow cylinder with a flat base, designed to rest on a table. Other ashtrays, particularly in public places, are either wall or floor mounted. While simple, utilitarian forms of ashtrays existed long before the 19th century, it was during the start of the 20th century that the design, aesthetics and their popularity took off. As more women began to smoke. in the early 1900s, the ashtray went closer to being an art form as many women avoided the use of the traditional ashtray as it failed to reflect their feminine values, regarded as an item rather basic in design the general societal through of the time was that smoking was an activity exclusive to men. What emerged were detailed, often very fancy ashtrays acceptable to women depicting either pastoral scenes or vibrantly coloured landscapes. As time went on, and the onset of women smoking both cigars and cigarettes became less of a departure from the average person, ashtrays saw a decline in design and aesthetics beginning more of a shift towards practicality. The subject item is a primitive form of ashtray used in public spaces any time from the 1920-1960s and is not associated with an historic person or event.
