The bonds would mature with interest after the war. Twelve major Government war loans (called Liberty, Austerity, Special or Victory loans) were offered during World War II. The paddle steamer "Gem was first launched in 1876 as a passenger and cargo mode of transport on the Murray River. In the '30's and '40's it operated as a tourist passenger boat. In 1948 it sunk in 15 feet of water but was repaired and refloated. It was retired in 1950. In 1962 it was sold to the Swan Hill pioneer Settlement. The Swan Hill Folk Museum was Australia's first open air museum and opened to the public in 1966, It was renamed the Pioneer Settlement.Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2003. Launch of "Pioneers and Painters: One Hundred years of Eltham and its Shire" by Alan Marshall. The history was commissioned by the Shire of Eltham and published as part of the Shire of Eltham centenary celebrations. Mary Stansfield, wife of Peter Stansfield (ex Chief Librarian Heidelberg Regional Library and Miss Jean Truebridge, (Deputy Librarian, Heidelberg Regional Library). In November Miss Truebridge was appointed Chief Librarian at the City of Heidelberg municipal library. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' This cabinet with the "Book of Remembrance" (refer Cat No 8010) was originally placed in the foyer (vestibule) of the Soldiers Memorial Institute Bendigo in 1926. After the renovations to the SMI 2016 - 18 it was then placed in what is now the "Building and RSL History Room"Cabinet heavy timber construction with four legs, has a glass top that opens at the front and lockable. Has a red felt inset for the "BOOK of REMEMBRANCE". At the back of the cabinet set at an angle is a brass plaque with an inscription in black and red with scrolls around. The plaque is on a timber backing attached to the cabinet."THIS CABINET and BOOK of REMEMBRANCE inscribed with the revered names of members of the AIF who enlisted from the Bendigo Military District and served in the GREAT WAR of 1914 - 1919 together with the names of those who subscribed to defray the cost of the Roll of HONOR on the FRONTAGE of this HALL were donated by MAJOR GEO.V.L. LANSELL, V.D. PRESIDENT of the BENDIGO R.S & S.I.L.A as a token of gratitude for the generous and spontaneous public response to the appeal launched and conducted by him for the completion of the BENDIGO SOLDIERS MEMORIAL"brsl, smirsl, remembrance -

Mounted decal "The Melbourne Tram" - glued to green vinyl covered craftwood or similar timber. Has a hanging strip or cord with two metal lugs screwed into the mounting material on rear. Mounted by "The Exhibition Centre" Randal advised that Y469 was painted dark green very briefly in 1992 - an initiative of the Kirner Government to operate "The Melbourne Tram" as a tourist service. The S.S.'Diomed' was the last of the Blue Funnel Line's coal-burning cargo ships. Launched in 1922 she made her last voyage from Australia to England in 1952 where she was broken up. The ship had been in service in Australia for thirty years, and as a parting gesture the ship's bell was presented to the Mission to Seafarers, Victoria by Alfred Holt & Co, the ship's owner in 1953 (see MTSV 0084 for the catalogue record of the ship's bell).Lay reader, Randall Stewart Murray, was a regular visitor to the s.s. Diomed over a number of years and accepted the offer of the ships brass bell when the ship was being broken up in 1953. This bell was on display in the Port Melbourne Mission and is now on the stage in the Flinders Street Mission.A black and white photograph of a ship at sea, the s.s. This photograph depicts the Royal Australian Navy's ship HMAS Bendigo (J187), one of 30 sips commissioned by the RAN for defence purposes in World War II. The ship was named after the City of Bendigo in Victoria. The corvette ship was a Bathurst class minesweeper, built by Cockatoo Docks and Engineering Company, at Cockatoo Island, Sydney. The ship was launched in March 1941, commissioned May 1941, decommissioned September 1946, and sold to a Chinese company as a civilian vessel.This photograph is significant for its association with the Royal Australian Navy and Australia's maritime and naval history. The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. Uncompleted application form to purchase Fourth Liberty Loan Bonds and mark the application 'credit City of St Kilda'. The bonds, which would mature with interest after the war, were administered by the Commonwealth War Loans Organisation. Twelve major Government war loans (called Liberty, Austerity, Special or Victory loans) were offered during World War II.
