Prior to the sealing of the Princes Highway west of Orbost, the road surface was anything but good, even by C1917 when cars started to use the road. From Orbost the old road via Marlo to Sydenham was abandoned for the new location which traversed more rugged country via Cabbage Tree, Bell Bird and Club Terrace to Cann River, and the reason for this diversion was on account of settlements being established at Murrungowar and Club Terrace, at which latter place there was a temporary rush to obtain gold. This road was constructed by the Public Works department and a maximum grade of 1 in 19 was adopted, and as speed was not to be catered for the grade followed in and out round the spurs and gullies, resulting in a maze of turns and twists which required a good deal of skill on the part of the horse driver to negotiate." - Bairnsdale Advertiser, Friday, May 2, 1947. A postcard in a series produced by the Rose Stereograph Company in Victoria, Australia as a souvenir of Marysville.A black and white photograph of a part of the forest that the Wolfram Track, which is part of the Wilks Creek Walking Track, runs through. The Wilks Creek Walking Track is in Marysville in Victoria. The Wolfram Track is named after the Wilks Creek Wolfram Mine which opened in around 1894. Wolframite is one of the principle ores of tungsten. The discovery was made in Wolfram Creek by a Mr Robinson who was probably a local of the district. Four creeks eventually proved to carry alluvial deposits of the ore; Wolfram Creek, Opas Creek, Quartz Creek and Main Creek. These two motels were built in the 1960’s on the eastern outskirts of Warrnambool on the corner of the old Princes Highway and Simpson St. They were both built around 1960. The Turn In was originally known as Freeland’s Turn In. The Hopkins River, later the Riverside Motel, was demolished in around 2000. This photograph provides a view of Warrnambool as it was beginning the expansion on the East side of Warrnambool. These postcards were made for sale in the Orbost Ehibition Centre. The Snowy River Talking Wall is on the lower outside of the Orbost Exhibition Centre. The cards relate the history of Orbost both indigenous and white. The contributors are: Barry Miller; Gary Green; Becky Illume; Dawn Van Den Berg; Ruth Hansen; Geordie Webb; Graham Falls; Laurie Harvey and Jonathon Renn. The Orbost Exhibition Centre is a community based, not-for-profit arts and entertainment center in Orbost, Victoria. It is the home to the National Wood Design Collection and the Annual Australian Wood Design Exhibition. The construction of Seaview commenced in 1860, after David Talbot, purchased the land from James Atkinson,It had been suggested that it was intended to be double storied but there is no evidence of how that would have been accomplished. Following Talbot’s insolvency, Michael O’Reilly leased the house in 1862 until 1876 when he left for Melbourne.William Powling (Solicitor) acquired the house for Eight hundred and twenty three pounds in 1890 and lived there the rest of his life.
