Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. St George's Presbyterian Church is at 4 Chapel Street, St Kilda East. It is substantial red brick Gothic Revival building with distinctive 33.5-metre banded octagonal belltower and attractive contrasting cream brickwork and freestone dressings. The facade is dominated by a double entrance surmounted by a triangular rose window. It was designed by Albert Purchas. It opened on 1 October 1877 and the newsletter discusses the celebrations of the centenary in 1977. Edward O’Donnell was elected a St. Kilda Councillor in 1888 and served for more than 40 years, including six terms as mayor. In 1872 he married Bridget Brown at St. Mary’s, East St. Kilda. Cardboard, punched out, folding model tram - Melbourne A class tram, numbered 262. Does not have a pantograph attachment. Gives details of the A class trams on the left hand side and notes that tram 246 was the first with the Yarra livery (1/3/2000) and that it was blue and green to represent the blue of Port Phillip Bay and the green of Melbourne's many parks. Blamey House was one of the residences used by Legacy as a home for Junior Legatees. The first few pages of this book explains the history and significance of the name Blamey House. Then it is like an honour roll and has pages to be inscribed with the name of each Junior Legatee that lives in the home plus their fathers name and service. There is a list of approximately 72 children in the book that lived in a Legacy home called Blamey House at some stage. The name Blamey House was transferred to three different homes run by Legacy until 1980. Blamey House was originally the name of a hostel set up in World War 2 for servicemen that needed short term accommodation and food. It was originally situated in Melbourne CBD on the corner of King and Collins Streets in the Robbs Building (since demolished). When the hostel was no longer required after the war, the trustees of Blamey House donated money - almost 20,000 pounds, to Legacy for a children and toddlers' home which was established in Balcombe Road Beaumaris. The condition of donation was that the name Blamey House be used and when the Balcombe Road property was sold in 1956 the name was transferred to Holmbush, another Legacy residence. Christ Church was constructed in 1854-57 and designed in Decorated Gothic style by Albert Purchase & Charles Swyer. It was enlarged in 1874 and 1881 to the designs of Sydney W Smith. It is one of four main buildings constructed on land granted to the Church of England in 1855 and named Church Square. The other buildings are the bishop's residence, vicarage and parish hall. Heritage Victoria describes it as a 'rare and significant square in the history of town planning in Victoria which demonstrates the importance of the church to the community'. It is built from rarely used undressed random coursed sandstone from Point King Sorrento. It is located at 14 Acland Street, St Kilda. The triangular rose window is said to have been modelled on Lichfield Cathedral and shows outstanding craftsmanship. Statue presented by Andrew Stenhouse, 3 December 1914. Donated by Mr Andrew Stenhouse, a retired contractor who lived at Beaconsfield Parade, St Kilda, he was interested in the reclamation of the foreshore in front of his dwelling Captain James Cook FRS (1728-1779) was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. During three voyages to the Pacific Ocean he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. He was killed in the Hawaiian Islands in 1779. The statue appears to have been the first monument erected to him in Victoria and is a replica of one in Whitby, England. It was unveiled on Monday December 7th, 1914 by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Arthur Stanley in front of Commonwealth and State dignitaries and hundreds of St Kilda residents.
