Yields Information about the operation of Ballarat's trams and safeworking procedures.Cast brass item with a flat part recessed section with the words "BALLARAT TRAMWAYS SECTION STAFF" cast into the surface and a flat section underneath, flush with the outside edges in which the words "PLEASANT ST TO CARLTON ST LOOP " stamped in. Has an open rounded end which forms a handle or a point where it could be hung on a peg. Used as a means of authorising a tramcar to have sole use of the track between the named points to avoid head on collisions. Safeworking object - known as a section staff. Not known when made, but in use until the introduction of the electric signalling in the mid 1930's by the SEC. Born in England in 1832, Albert Bush was attracted to Australia by the lectures of Dr Laing. In 1852 he travelled to Queensland and later to Sydney before coming to Bendigo. His initial mining efforts were not successful so he gained employment as a clerk in a grocery store. In 1857 he opened his own grocery shop in partnership with Mr Ferris. Initially listed as T J Connelly's Tin shop, this premises on the corner of High and Forest Street, expanded to include all items of ironmongery. By 1878 they were advertising gas stoves for sale and installation.The item is a hard cover book recording factory orders of T.J. Connolly, Ironmongers, Sandhurst. The book has an alphabetical index at the front which records customer names and number/s of their order. Each handwritten page records the order number, date, name and goods supplied. The hard cardboard cover has "F O BOOK" added to it with black ink. The front cover has considerable wearing to the bottom middle including water damage. The mottled front and back covers have considerable wear. The red spine covering is worn, and the cover is starting to come away from the pages at the top. The book includes the date range of October 1890 to August 1894. All pages have been used. This item is part of the Margaret Roberts Collection.
