The world’s most ecologically distinct bird lives in the native grasslands of Victoria - but only just. The plains-wanderer is a small bird that was once widespread across the grasslands of south-eastern Australia. Today there are fewer than 1000 mature birds in the wild. The plains-wanderer is under threat due to habitat loss caused by overgrazing, cropping and suburban sprawl. Unlike most other birds, female wanderers are larger and more colourful and the males take care of the chicks. They are only about 15cm tall and weigh between 40-80g for the male and 55-90g for the female. Their intricate plumage mirrors the colours of their grassland home so they blend in perfectly with their surroundings. The plains-wanderer’s origins date back to when Australia was part of the Gondwana supercontinent over 60 million years ago. They are so biologically distinct that their extinction would result in the loss of a branch of the tree of life. A fussy grass dweller, they like neither too much nor too little grass. That is where sheep grazing can help. After years of low numbers in Victoria, plains-wanderer populations have been increasing in Terrick Terrick National Park in north west Victoria, as sheep grazing maintains the grass in the park at a suitable level. With the right management, this ecologically important bird species is continuing to survive in the native grasslands of Victoria. The back of the photo is inscribed "To dear Lizzie with love and best wishes from Nellie, Xmas 1911" - Lizzie being Elizabeth Ann Shillinglaw, daughter of Phillip and Sarah Shillinglaw born 1879. The woman in the photo appears to be aged approximately 40 years and is dressed and with a hair style typical of the fashion of 1911. This would make her birth year around the early 1870s. The only Nellie present in the family tree as currently understood is Helen (Nellie) Lyon born 1897 who came to Eltham from Mildura with her mother and brothers in 1913. She married Arthur Edward Bird however she is a generation younger and the dates do not fit. The only other known Nell is Ellen May Bird, daughter of George and Janet Bird, born 1892 so she too is a generation too young. No historical information, but most likely used in a house in the Orbost district, as a display or occasional table.Towards the end of the nineteenth century, there was a revival of the taste for bamboo furniture featuring pseudo oriental styles. Bamboo furniture was mass-produced by several London firms. This item has aesthetic value.A smallish round table with four legs made from brown polished bamboo. A smaller round shelf is located near the bottom of the legs and below the table top. The table top is decorated with an oriental-style lacquered pattern with a bird and flowers and an edge pattern. Rabbits are recognised as a pest in Australia. They were often trapped and eaten especially during the depression years of the 1890s and 1930s but also the 1950s and 1960s. Steel-jaw traps work by snapping shut on the leg of an animal, holding it until a trapper arrives, or until the animal dies or wrings its paw off. They became illegal in Australia during the 1980s on animal cruelty grounds. This skirt belonged to Olga Black, a long-time Brighton resident. The linen used for the skirt were woven by Olga's great-grandmother Efstathia in the late-nineteenth century with flax grown on the island of Ithaca. In the 1950s, Olga made the fabric into a skirt, embellishing it with hand embroidery. Olga Maria Black was born in Melbourne in 1930, the daughter of Ithacan migrants Constantine and Toula Mavrokefalos. Constantine first emigrated to Australia in 1902, returning to Greece circa 1912-13 to serve his home country in the Balkan Wars. Toula's family had left Ithaca for Romania when she was only six months old, but she happened to be visiting the island at the very time that Constantine arrived, fresh from the war. Within three weeks they were married, and when Constantine returned to Melbourne in 1914 his new bride came with him. Constantine had trained as an accountant, but his qualifications were not recognised in Australia. Changing his surname to the Anglicised "Black", he started off working in his older brother Dionysios's cafés before going into business on his own. In 1917 he opened the Paris Residential Café at 54-56 Swanston Street, which offered both dining and accommodation. The business saw some years of success, but did not survive the Great Depression. Constantine died in 1944. Olga's mother Toula learned to sew as a child, while growing up in the Romanian village of Brila. She developed her skills making lace and embroidering items for her trousseau. Some of the linen she embroidered had been woven from flax on Ithaca by her own grandmother, Efstathia. During the Depression, when money was scarce, Toula embroidered at home, doing work for a factory in Flinders Lane. Using a cotton reel, a threepence and a sixpence she created and embroidered designs on hundreds of blouses. Olga spent her preschool days sitting at the table where her mother worked. Toula would involve Olga by allowing her to help choose the colour combinations. Toula lived with Olga in Brighton until her death in 1976. Olga inherited her mother's sewing skills. She re-invented some of Toula’s trousseau nightdresses and skilfully altered other clothing, making dresses which she wore around Brighton for many years.Ankle-length full cream linen skirt with multi-coloured cross stitch embroidery featuring mountains, birds and trees. Biscuit tin: late 19th century Swallow & Ariell operated continuously in Port Melbourne from 1858 to 1991. The former Swallow & Ariell’s factory buildings, now The Anchorage, continue to add interest and pleasure along Stokes, Rouse and Princes Streets. Thomas Swallow, born in Reading, travelled to California and Ballarat before setting up a business making ships biscuits in Port Melbourne. His business partner Ariell died in 1877. He then went into partnership with Frederick Derham, his son in law. Company farms around Shepparton provided much of its wheat, and after 1889 most was ground into flour on the Port Melbourne premises. For the year ending 1 May 1920, the factory used 51 tons of butter, 2,740 eggs and produced more than 66 lines of biscuits. They also made puddings, elaborate cakes and ice cream. S & A was a significant employer – locally referred to as S & A College. A collection of 20 photographs which shows different aspects of Warrnambool. In 1896 Joseph Jordan was given exclusive rights to produce a souvenir booklet for the 1896-97 Warrnambool Industrial and Arts Exhibition. The Jordan studio sold many publications such as albums, which featured local scenes, as well as postcards, and greeting cards for different occasions and portraits The Jordan studio was a significant photographic studio in Warrnambool. They produced a large volume of work which is a useful record of scenes of the Western District and Warrnambool. This Souvenir booklet was a memento of an important event in Warrnambool. This ledger was used initially by H. James & Co., Shipping and General Commission agents in Orbost in the late 19th century and early 20th century. It was then used by James and Bird, Auctioneers and Estate Agents.Henry James (1860-1932) was a well-known identity in the Orbost district. He was a stock agent and auctioneer who helped to establish the seed bean industry in Orbost. He was the second secretary of the Snowy River Shipping Co. as well as a shire councillor and prominent member of MUIOOF. Miss Eva Carmichael, the subject of the photograph, was one of only two survivors from the wreck of the Loch Ard, wrecked on Mutton Bird Island near Port Campbell, Victoria, on June 1st, 1878..The photograph holds great significance for its connection to Eva Carmichael, one of two survivors from the wreck of the Loch Ard. It is also significant for its connection to the Loch Ard, one of the most tragic shipwrecks in Victoria's coastline and listed on the Historic Shipwreck Register.Photographic portrait mounted on brown cardboard of Miss Eva Carmichael. Description by author of a visit to rookeries of the Little Penguin at the Point Grant end of Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia, during nesting season, 1920. Includes one photograph of 4 penguins. The author, Tom Tregallis, refers to the birds as moulting, but this takes place in March-April, so the article must have been written at that time, before its publication in November, 1920. Or Tregallis was mistaken in thinking some of the birds were moulting, as they do not go to sea during the moult. Tregallis also describes the penguin rookery at the Little Nobby and Shelly Beach nearby.Few accounts of the Little Penguin rookeries on Phillip Island during the 1920s exist in publicly accessible form, so this is a valuable description of the physical area, the numbers of penguins there at the time, feral animals such as foxes, cats and rabbits, perceived behaviour of these animals at the time.Photocopy of Magazine or Newspaper cutting, black and white/greyscale print, 10 paragraphs.
