Badge campaigning against the Victorian Liberal government's widespread privatisation of the public health service (and other public services) in the 1990s, which resulted in job cuts and site closures throughout the state. The Australian Nursing Federation, the union representing nurses in Victoria, was a strong opponent of these cuts and closures, that resulted in pressure applied on an already overstretched and poorly resourced group of workers. "In a context of high unemployment and an ideological commitment to small government, there were widespread job losses and people affixed stickers to their cars saying 'I've been Jeffed', i.e. made redundant. The cuts were not confined to government employees and many staff of private enterprises also lost their jobs. This was the era of the 'consulting poor' as professional staff struggled to make a living as independent consultants, rather than employees. Ringwood Technical School was the first co-educational technical school in Victoria. In 1963, 229 Form 1 students were enrolled, being the biggest student intake so far in the school’s 5 year history, bringing the school population close to 700 in Forms 1 to 4. Extensions to the 3 year old building were under way to cope with the increasing student numbers. Experienced teachers came from all parts of the State to teach in this unique school, The school was known locally as Ringwood Tech School, Ringwood Tech, Ringy Tech, Ringers Tech, The Tech and RTS. It began in 1958 with Form 1 boys, then Form 1 girls in 1959 at a separate campus. Both groups were hosted at district schools until 1960, when the new school was completed at Heathmont. It was the first co-ed technical school in Victoria. The school underwent several name and role changes in later years, and finally closed in 2003.This is the parent record for the large archives collection of Ringwood Technical School (later Eastern Secondary College), consisting of class and group photos, trip and other photos, and various documents and magazines from the school's beginning in 1958 to its closure in 1993. Individual items fall in the VC Reference Number range 21001 - 22899 and where possible are grouped by year. This "sewing and darning" box was purchased before 1952 (the date that the Clark Brothers merged with J&P Coats). It was in an era where the production and alteration/modification to any household or personal clothing was carried out by a family member/s. This was at the period where self sufficiency in rural and especially remote areas was a requirement and not just a hobby. Clothing modifications and "hand me downs" was a way of life. The long and tiresome journey from home to millinery shops was a great force to ensure that home sewing was carried out in the majority of residential and farm areas.This sewing box was donated by a pioneer family in the Kiewa Valley. Its significance points to an era before the establishment of the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme and the establishment of the Mount Beauty Township. It was a time when the rural industries of the Kiewa Valley was rich in production of beef, dairy products, tobacco leaf and before the mass of alpine adventurers that tourism sparked. It was a time rural enterprises out shone tourism.This wooden sewing box is covered with decorative paper. The lid is fastened to the bottom section with two small hinges each having four screws. Each side is fixed to the other by a mortise groove. At the front of the box is a small clasp for complete closure. The box contains needles, darrning thread, thimble, a glass vial with metal screwtop and a red plastic cylindrical container with a thimble screw on top(contains a small reel with three different cotton thread compartments).On outside lid "FROM A FRIEND. Cutting from the "For the Record" section of The Courier, Ballarat's weekend magazine of Saturday August 12, 1995 about the location of Ballarat's first set of traffic lights. Were at the corners Mair St. with the intersection of Doveton, Armstrong and Lydiard Streets. The latter had trams at the time. They became operational about May 1970. In 1884 Mrs Aherne and Mrs Mrs Willward founded Girton and named it after the first residential college for women at Cambridge University in England. It was controlled by the Anglican Church. By 1992 the church could no longer afford to run the school and announce its imminent closure. A group of parents and citizens formed the "Friends of Girton" and with massive plans and fund raising they managed to reopened the school in 1993 as an independent school with no gap in classes.Bendigo Advertiser from Saturday March 28, 1964. This item was originally acquired by Harold Bakes, together with a Fire Hydrant Stand And a petrol pump , from the P.M.G. depot in Hawthorn in the 1970s . It was stored in the City of Nunawading Council yard in Station Street, Nunawading, and later loaned to the Australia Post Mail Exchange in Rooks Road, Nunawading. On the closure of the Mail Exchange, it was transferred to the Australia Post Museum in Dandenong.
