This photograph is taken in the bedroom of the man's home in the suburbs of Melbourne. It depicts one of the types of nursing care given by Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) Sisters in the community. The Sister is visiting the man's home and is administering an injection which has been ordered by a doctor. Glass syringes were used by the Society until the mid 1960s and were re sterilized for future use. After this time plastic disposable syringes were used.The Trained nurses of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), later known as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), visited patients in their home and gave best practice care in many fields of nursing and to people of many cultures throughout its 130 years of expansion. Initial visits not only assessed the specific nursing situation but the situation as a whole. Their patients ranged in age from babes, children, adults to the elderly and referrals were taken from Hospitals, General Practitioners and allied Health facilities. Some of the care provided was: – Post-Natal care given to mother and babe, Wound Care following various types of surgery, accidents, burns, cancer, leg ulcers etc. Supervising and teaching Diabetic Care, including teaching and supervising people with Diabetes to administer their own Insulin, and administering Insulin to those unable to give their own injections. Administering other injections and setting up weekly medication boxes. The Sisters performed Catheterizations on adults suffering from conditions such as Quadriplegia, Paraplegia, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and Guillan-Barre Syndrome, and when required at school on children for e.g. those with Spina Bifida. The Sisters visited those requiring Cystic Fibrosis support and care; those requiring Haemo-Oncology care, including visiting children at school; those requiring Home Enteral Feeding care, and those requiring IV therapy at home and home Dialysis. Palliative Care was given including pain relief with the use of syringe drivers, personal care as needed, and advice and support to both patient and family. RDNS provided Stoma management to those needing Urostomy, Ileostomy and Colostomy care and those requiring Continence care. HIV/AIDS nursing care was provided; visits to Homeless Persons were made. Personal care was given to patients ranging in age and with varying mobility problems, such as those with MS, MND, Guillan-Barre Syndrome, Quadriplegia, Paraplegia, Acquired Brain Injury, following a Cerebrovascular Accident (Stroke), those with severe Arthritis and those with a form of Dementia. When necessary the elderly were assisted with personal care and advice given on safety factors with the use of hand rails, bath or shower seats, and hand showers. Rehabilitation with an aim towards independence remained at the forefront of the Sister’s minds and when possible using aids and instruction on safe techniques enabled the person to become fully independent. All care included giving advice and support to the patient and their Carers. Sister Beryl Hawker is a District Nurse working for the Melbourne District Nursing Service (MDNS) and is leaving their Headquarters at 452 St. Kilda Road, Melbourne to give nursing care to a patient in their home situated in a Melbourne suburb. This is a report on the 1929 Annual Demonstration from Aaron Beattie to the Junior Legacy Club. It includes a summary of income and expenditure, and a few recommendations for the future demonstrations. The letter is in reply to a request from the Junior Legacy Club for Aaron Beattie to provide more detail in his accounts for services provided. The original letter can be found under record item 00200.A record that Aaron Beattie was key in the production of the annual demonstrations. Ticket was used in 1931 and kept in storage by a member of the Edina's crew. The SS Edina was the most famous steamer in Australia and underwent a number of changes and refits during its lifetime. It had an unchallenged record of strandings and collisions with other vessels and of escaping serious damage itself. The vessels City of Melbourne, Courier, Manawatu, Excelsior (twice), Hovell, Batman, all suffered. When Edina was retired in 1938 it was the world's oldest working steamer and had travelled more than 1 million km. She was finally broken up by George Seelf on the banks of the Maribyrnong in 1957.The SS Edina was an iconic and affectionately regarded part of Port Phillips maritime history and culture. It is historically significant for being internationally famous as the worlds oldest working screw steamship between 1912 and 1938. Its career was varied and interesting and it is considered significant for its involvement in the Crimean War, US Civil War, NZ gold rushes, and locally for its career as a western district steamship and Bay steamer. The Child's Education magazines were published for British teachers between 1924 and 2007 to help them plan activities for the season ahead. The internal pages contain a variety of lesson ideas in the form of a music, art or craft activities. This copy was donated to the Kew Historical Society's collection by the Preshil archives.This 1958 periodical, sourced from the Preshil School. is interesting as it represents the continuing influence of English education and culture in the Australian curriculum in the late 1950s.20 page newsletter containing artwork and articles on the theme shipping and boats. Text on page 3 describes the subject of the issue as 'Around our Coasts'. This is amplified by the text as: "In preparation for the children's seaside holiday, descriptions and pictures of ships, boats and lighthouses, and their work are contained in this issue. Between 1959 and 1962, the Melbourne YCW (Boys) participated in local campaigns to allow sports to be played on municipal ovals on a Sunday. A key battleground was in the suburb of Camberwell in 1959. This collection of material relates to the campaign and includes newspaper clippings, leaflets and internal reports and memos. It is a sample of the materials held in collection (Contact the Archive to access MO_4_24). It features materials produced by the YCW and other parties involved in the campaign. The debate around Sunday sport campaign revealed Victoria's growing suburban sporting culture, the developing concept of youth, and the YCW position on leisure as a break from work rather than 'dour' Sabbatarianism. Students from Bulla and MIckleham Primary Schools attended a camp at Beechworth in 1988 where they undertook a number of different outdoor activities such as busk walking, fishing, visits to the Chinese Cemetery and boomerang throwing. In this photograph the children met with one of the local First Nation's people and were shown the art of boomerang throwing. The photograph was taken in 1989 when the children in grades 4 an 5 attended a school camp at Gundiwindi, which is in the Yarra Valley on the border of Wandin and Nth. Silvan. At the camp the children were acquainted with the skills used by the local indigenous people. The children the photograph attempted to construct a bark shelter along the lines of those build by the local indigenous people. The photograph was taken in 1989 when students in Grades 4 and 5 from Bulla Primary School attended a school camp at Gundiwindi Camp. The camp is in the Yarra Valley area on the border of North Wandin and Silvan. Associated with the Stalker family of Surrey Hills. Betty Neil Smith (Stalker) was born in 1919 in Balwyn (Surrey Hills). She was one of 4 daughters of Alexander MacLaren Stalker (1885-1970/1973) and Charlotte Eleanor Hayward (1884-1953) who were married in 1911. Her sisters were Ruth McLaren Stalker (1913, Surrey Hills), Joan Winnock Stalker (1917, Surrey Hills) and Beatrice Mary Stalker(1919). Their mother Charlotte Hayward was a teacher prior to her marriage. Their father Alexander, an accountant, lived in Wattle Valley Road, Canterbury in 1910. From 1912-1931 they are listed at ‘Benwerrin’, (44) Wandsworth Road, Surrey Hills. This was later the home of Beatrice Mary and Howard Everard. Betty, Ruth and Joan later lived at 9/48 Wandsworth Road. it is assumed that the photo is of the Stalker girls and given their parents' later residence at Brighton, this may have been taken at Brighton beach. This photo documents part of the social history of a family with a long and strong association with Surrey Hills. The backdrop of the typical bathing boxes used for changing into swimsuits, for lunch and for storing sports and beach gear, documents beach recreation and culture of the 1930s. For many years in the late nineteenth century, Brighton was Melbourne's favourite seaside destination. The now iconic bathing boxes were a response to Victorian ideas of morality and sea bathing. There are 82 Brighton bathing boxes, which protected by a heritage overlay because of their uniform scale and proportion, building materials, sentry order alignment. All retain their classic Victorian architectural features with timber framing, weatherboards and corrugated iron roofs. They remain as they did over one hundred years ago, as licensed bathing boxes. Mary Stalker’s engagement notice in The Argus in July 1947 indicates that she was the youngest daughter of Mr & Mrs A M Stalker of Montlare [Monclair] Avenue, North Brighton. It announces her engagement to ”Cr Howard Breedon Everard JP Ev-Ron, Woori Yallock, Youngest son of Hon WH Everard Wellington St Kew and the late Mrs Everard.” Beatrice Mary Stalker was born in 1919. Her parents were Alexander MacLaren Stalker (1885-1970/1973) and Charlotte Eleanor Hayward (1884-1953) who were married in 1911. Her sisters were Joan Winnock Stalker, Betty Neil Stalker and Ruth McLaren Stalker. Charlotte was a teacher prior to her marriage. Alexander, an accountant, lived in Wattle Valley Road, Canterbury in 1910. From 1912-1931 they are listed at ‘Benwerrin’, Wandsworth Road, Surrey Hills. Mary Stalker married in 1949 and by 1954 she and Howard were living at 44 Wandsworth Road, Surrey Hills, which was their home for decades. Howard was born in 1914 and died in October 2010: "EVERARD. - Howard Breedon. In loving memory of Howard, who lived life to the full to the very end of his 96 years. Greatly loved and honoured by Mary, Rosemary, David, Elizabeth, John and extended families." Beatrice Mary Everard died on 25 September 2019, aged 93. it is assumed that the woman in the photo is Mary's mother, Charlotte Eleanor Stalker (nee Hayward). The photo taken at the beach in 1930's may have been at Brighton, given the family’s later association with the suburb. This photo documents part of the social history of a family with a long and strong association with Surrey Hills. The backdrop of the typical bathing boxes used for changing into swimsuits, for lunch and for storing sports and beach gear, documents beach recreation and culture of the 1930s. Given the family's later residence in Brighton, this may well have been taken at Brighton Beach. For many years in the late nineteenth century, Brighton was Melbourne's favourite seaside destination. The now iconic bathing boxes were a response to Victorian ideas of morality and sea bathing. There are 82 Brighton bathing boxes, which protected by a heritage overlay because of their uniform scale and proportion, building materials, sentry order alignment. All retain their classic Victorian architectural features with timber framing, weatherboards and corrugated iron roofs. They remain as they did over one hundred years ago, as licensed bathing boxes.
