Mount Martha House Historical Collection
Domestic object - Silver plate Milk Jug, Mount Martha House Milk Jug
This little milk jug was in use when Mount Martha House was a hotel. It was offered to the Historical Collection by Rosemary Murray who found it in a box of items which her grandfather has purchased at an auction. This is the only item which has returned to the Historical Collection, it was verified by a local resident, Jean Male, who was a waitress during 1947 - 1950, who said she remembers spending her weekend cleaning the silverware. This was typical hotel ware of the era. A small silver plated milk jug with lid and handle attached. Engraved with Mount Martha House on one side. Journal - Annual school magazine, The Peninsula School, Peninsula School Journal, 1964
The end of 1964 saw the first edition of The Peninsula School Journal published. It was intended to be not only a record of School activities but also an opportunity for the students to contribute prose, verse, art and photography. The editing was done by the students under the guidance of Mr Laurie Arter, the Senior English Master. The Pen evolved from an A5 sized booklet (1964-71) to an A4 book (1972-80), then came the renaming of the publication, from the Peninsula School Journal to the Pen (1981). Numbering dropped with 1990 issue. The Pen has been published annually 56 times, except for 2020 when schools were in lockdown due to COVID-19.A5 size, 60 pagesnon-fictionThe end of 1964 saw the first edition of The Peninsula School Journal published. Badge - Metal Hat Badge, Peninsula Grammar Cadet Unit Silver Metal Badge for Slouch Hat
These Silver Cadet Badges are worn on the front of slouch hats which are traditionally worn by senior cadets for all parades and by the whole unit for Final Parades and formal events (ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies). These badges are significant as most cadet units do not have a separate unit badge for their slouch hats and instead wear the similar Australian Army Cadets badge. However, a separate badge is often commonplace within school units as community units will usually display the other badge. 2 x Silver Metal Badge showcasing the Peninsula Grammar logo in a sphere of silver. Possibility for clasps on back and comes attached with two gold hat pins to do so. Book, Hector VJ Hanson et al, Memoirs of a larrikin : a Red Hill lad remembers, 1994
Hector Valentine James Hanson Esq., a sort of "knock-about" bloke of over eighty, has lived and worked in quite a few areas of eastern Australia, and like all of us, has a story to tell. Generally. I believe that the stories of "ordinary folk" are all too often left unwritten. This book is just part of the history of each place that Hec lived, worked and relaxed, particularly the hilly country of Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. Hec knew the country like the back of his hand and in many instances could have told various landholders things about their properties that even they did not know. H.V.J.Hanson is "living history" and the tales related in this book are both interesting and entertaining. Foreword by Terence J. Book, Jane Sandilands, Roy Everard Ross, 6.7.1899-1.11.1970 : engineer, investor, quarryman, philanthropist, 2003
For 25 years of his working life he worked as a Shire Engineer in West Gippsland and developed a reputation for competence and efficiency. Passionate about both trees and golf, he was a careful and measured man with an entrepreneurial spirit who worked behind the scenes He was seen by many as aloof and a hard man and by the very few who became close to him, as warm and fun loving and fond of children. Ross formed a business association with Wally Lawson in Warragul and together they embarked on a number of projects to advance the town and the district. As a young man, Ross had studied geology and working with quarries was familiar to him in his role as a Shire Engineer. In 1959 he established Bayview Quarries in partnership with Wally Lawson. When, in 1968, Bayview Quarries was taken over by Boral Ltd., Ross approached Tom Maw who had an operational quarry at Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula. Ross and Maw became partners in what became Hillview Quarries. Ross also became the largest individual shareholder in Western Mining. Those shares formed the major part of the legacy he left to establish The R. E. Ross Trust and The Trust now operates on its income from assets acquired following the disposal of the Western Mining shares and from the earnings of Hilhnew Quarries. It is the only trust in Australia which owns a quarry as one of its investments.non-fictionFor 25 years of his working life he worked as a Shire Engineer in West Gippsland and developed a reputation for competence and efficiency.
