In the late 1800's early 1900's transporting goods by road was difficult and at times impossible because roads as thoroughfares did not exist.The means of travelling along the roads in the 1800's was by bullock wagon, horse pulled dray, pack horse or simply by foot. Four wheeled single horse-drawn vehicle containing a wooden stretcher, shaded by a black canvas hood. Driver's seat of black leather. Vehicle used as a jockey's ambulance at Caulfield Racecourse during the 1890s.It had space for one stretcher. Horse drawn ambulances, despite having springs, could be very rough to travel in. They were gradually replaced by motor ambulances at Australian race tracks. This ambulance is currently on public display at the Ambulance Victoria Museum in Bayswater.

Ski-Horizon is the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs which began publication in 1949. The were 26 original member clubs which included Albury Ski Club, Bogong Ski Club, Myrtleford Ski Club, Tallangatta and District Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club. There are many ways of travelling over snow - skis, toboggans, sleds, using snow shoes, machines, horses etc. This 'snow scooter' appears to have been handmade for faster transport (than walking) over snow. Machines with engines 'snow mobiles' are more commonly used nowadays. This snow scooter was possibly used at Falls Creek for moving around the village during winter.Wooden plank curved and lifting at the front and at the end of the back an attached small rectangular wooden framed plastic grid (for non slippery foothold). Underneath plank - at front is a metal rudder that swivels when the handle is turned and at the back are 2 metal fixed 'rudders'.At the front, on top, is a metal stand forming a triangle (for stability) with a steel rod which goes through the plank to the front rudder and up to a bicycle type handle at the top. Each point of the divider is places on a map point, then the distance between the points of the divider is measured against the scale of the chart or map. Travel wasn't just for the wealthy any more but everyone. Suitcases began as an afterthought in the luggage and leather goods business, but they soon became the very symbol of travel. An 1897 wholesale price list included the words "suitcase" only twice in a 20-page list of luggage types. In America a 1907 T. Eaton & Co. Catalogue, trunks took up a full page while suitcases share a page with club bags and valises. In a 1911 a United Company catalogue, now displayed around 40 per cent of the advertisements were for suitcases. Early suitcases were lighter and more portable than trunks, but they were still bulky by today's standards.
