Yields information about three bogie trams possibly stored in Ripon St awaiting their use for an event.Negative and Digital images of the Wal Jack Ballarat Negative file of No. 36 and two other bogie trams parked in Ripon St North, just to the north of Sturt St. The house in the background is No. 3 Ripon St North and is still there (27-4-2020),. The spire of the St Peters Anglican Church can be seen. Tram is showing Special, possibly parked in Ripon St for a special event and waiting use. Perhaps for the Royal Visit. Journal - Newsletter, Legacy Newsletter 1965-1966, 1965 and 1966
Copies of newsletters to Legacy widows in 1960s. There were usually 5 editions per year (in 1965 February, April, July, October and November). Newsletters include a notice from the Senior Widows Club coordinator F R G Strickland and information about events and meetings. The editor was Mrs B E Shephard. There were so many widows that the meetings had to be held at the Melbourne Town Hall to accomodate the numbers. November's meeting was a picnic in the Botanical Gardens and January the widows met in Fitzroy Gardens. In November there were calls for nominations for the committee members for the following year. Committee comprised of a President, 2 Vice presidents, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer, Hon. Assistant Secretary and 14 members of the committee. The first edition in the new format was in 1960, previously there had been a quarterly magazine but the distribution was limited, they changed to a 4 page newsletter format to reach more of the widows. The newsletter was priced at 1D a copy. Various pages of interest have been added to show different news items. Not all editions have been scanned.Brings to life the activities provided for the widows and the work of Melbourne Legacy in the 1960s.Black typed newsletter x 11 editions from 1965 and 1966. Photograph - Army Survey Regiment Summer Ball - Dinner, Staff and Entertainment, 1995
This is a set of 36 photographs taken at the combined Officer, Warrant Officer and Sergeant’s Mess Summer Ball held at the Army Survey Regiment (ASR), Fortuna Villa on the 25th of February 1995. The Summer Ball was one of the last large scale formal functions held at Fortuna Villa before ASR’s closure the following year. Photos of personnel and their guests was taken on their arrival near the Pompeii Fountain in the gardens at the front of the main building. The Ball and Dinner was held at the rear of Fortuna Villa in temporary 20’ x 30’ Army tents set up on the roadway in front of the transport compound. SERCO contract staff provided the catering and the ASR’s Other Ranks performed stewarding and kitchen hand duties. Refer to item 6347 for information on the administrative file held in the collection and items 6370.23P, 6371.33P and 6372.25P for additional photographs taken at the Summer Ball.This is a set of 36 photographs taken at the Officer, Warrant Officer and Sergeant’s Summer Ball held at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Villa on the 25th of February 1995. The Melbourne General Cemetery opened in June 1853. The first male buried there was John Alexander Burnett, chief clerk to the mercantile firm of Dalgety, Borradale & Co. The headstone reads: In Memory of James Alexander Burnett, Merchant, Who Died 25 May 1853, Aged 36 Years. Burnett Street, St Kilda, is named after him. The street was created by F. G. The Appendix of Art Schools under the Technological commission includes Ballarat City Schoolof Art (Academy of Arts, Ballarat West), Ballarat East School of Art (Ballarat East Public Library, Barkly St) and Ballarfat West School of Art (Ballaarat Mechanics' Institute).1 Twenty-three page typed report on foolscap sized paper dated 1886. Weapon - Hand Grenade, Mills Bomb No. 36 (Inert), 1941
Patented by William Mills and known as 'Mills Bombs', these were first used in WW1 and were used by the British Army until 1972. Three models were made - No. 5, No. 23 and No. 36. The latter two could be fired from a rifle (with suitable attachments). Note that the casing is grooved to assist fragmentation. These grenades had a time delay fuse of 7 seconds initially but later a 4 second fuse was introduced. Upon explosion, its lethal range was approx. 90m but on hard ground it could be double that. Over 75 million were produced.Cast-iron 'pineapple' shaped anti-personnel grenade.
