Langwill Bros & Davies of Melbourne were agents for imported farm pump engines, windmills and other farm implements.. Because of war shortages, they started building the engines themselves under the Challenge brand in 1916. "..with the exception of the magneto, every part of the engine is manufactured in Australia from Australian raw material." They also sold imported Challenge windmills.This item is associated with the history of agriculture in early Orbost and is a useful research tool.A small light brown covered catalogue which has "Langwill Bros. & Davies Pty Ltd" diagonally across front in black print, items on offer and details of the company. This book relates the story of one family in the early settlement of Victoria from the perspective of Sarah Midgley from 1851 to 1861 and in the case of Richard Skilbeck 1858 though to 1864. They lived and worked on their farm on the outskirts of Warrnambool at Yangery. The diaries relate the story of their work on the farm travels through the district and in their local Wesleyan church and social life.This book provides a detailed and first- hand view of early pioneering life. The Skilbeck family was an important part of life in the Yangery- Koroit area where they farmed for close to 150 years. Tan hard covered book with tan and yellow dust jacket. Title and text is black. The Fisher family lived at Waterloo farm, Smythe's Road, near Ballarat. Alice Russell Shaw the daughter of Jessie Black Hamilton and John Shaw, married Albert Fisher in 1909 and had 10 children by him. They lived at Waterloo farm, Smythe's Road. Alice Russell Fisher (Shaw) was known as 'Queenie' Fisher. This family farmed in the Smythe's area for many years. They produced fine milk and butter. Jean, their second eldest child recalled that when they made the butter sculptures they used plenty of salt so that it wouldn't melt. This Unit was donated to us by the Falla Family of Donald, and picked up from the farm on 22 February 2007.The unit being in reasonable condition would almost lend itself to reconditioning for use.This Gas Producer Unit is in reasonable condition, with apparently all doors and fittings intact. The central oval shaped hopper is flanged by round and regular containers, interconnected with a series of pipes. Obviously a professionally made item, with signs of the original paintwork still visible. A brass nameplate states the make as Electrolux -

Owned by Mervin Buckram (of Rochester), used for private use on the farm at Mewburn Park. Used approx 1940s.An important survivor from the early dairy industry. Maffra has always held a leading role in Herd testing, so it has considerable community significance. An earlier example is held at Stratford, with another, between the two, and less intact, at Old Gippstown.A round, black herd-testing centrifuge with a flat top and bottom. It has a hinged flap that opens and stands on three legs. There is a smaller round piece on top of the centrifuge which has a thick cylindrical shaped piece of metal in the centre.
