... Badge Badge Stokes & Son ...The Sailors and Soldiers Fathers' Association was established in the First World War. The group was active (and often outspoken), involving themselves with hospital visits, repatriation issues, employment of returned servicemen and the establishment of returned servicemen’s rights relating to principles such as pensions and housing. There appears to be a close co-operation between this group and the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia in forming a group with strong lobbying abilities. Similarly, they were active in raising funds to build Memorials after the war. The Association remained active after the First World War in pursuing returned soldiers’ rights. They appear under a slightly different name during the Second World War (Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen’s Fathers' Association) but their goals were identical........The Sailors and Soldiers Fathers' Association, established during the First World War, was active in fundraising, establishing memorials and advocacy for issues such as the repatriation and employment of returned servicemen. Marysville & District Historical SocietyLetter (Item) - Hand written letter, John William Lindt, 1903
... He and his wife ran the successful Keppel’s Australian Hotel. Two of their sons, John and Jerry, established a farm and opened up the surrounding high country. ...A letter written to Maurice Keppel by John William Lindt in 1903.A letter written to Maurice Keppel by John William Lindt in 1903. John William Lindt was born in Germany in 1845. At 17 he took a working passage to Australia on a Dutch sailing ship. Taking up work as an itinerant piano-tuner, he traveled amongst towns in Victoria and New South Wales before settling in Grafton in 1863 where he became assistant and apprentice to photographer Conrad Wagner. After a brief return to Germany in 1867 Lindt took over management of Wagner’s studio in 1869. He married Wagner’s daughter, Anna on 13 January 1872. Over 1873-1874, using the slow and laborious wet-plate collodion process, John Lindt produced photographs of the local indigenous people both in their environment conducting actual traditional ceremonies in the Clarence River district, and in his studio. Twelve of this series is included in his 1874 album Australian Aboriginals. John Lindt moved to Melbourne in 1876 where he worked for Batchelder & Co. before opening his own opulent studios at number 7 at the top of Collins Street opposite the Treasury, in 1877. John Lindt's business of this period was wide-ranging, and included portraits, records of Melbourne public buildings and streetscapes, the Botanical Gardens, and Port Melbourne. He was a welcome photographer of members of parliament and other Melbourne personalities, their society and cultural life including the theatre, and was known as a ‘rich man’s photographer’ for those whose families he grouped informally on the lawns in front of their mansions, with servants at the rails of the upstairs balconies. He continued with landscape, producing folios Fernshaw and Watt River Scenery, Victoria ( c.1878-82), Scenery on the Ovens and Buckland Rivers, Victoria (c.1878–82) and Lorne, Louttit Bay and Cape Otway Ranges (1883). Sales of his Black Spur scenery amounted to approximately 25,000 copies printed from the original negatives between 1882 and 1892. John Lindt, in collaboration with Nicholas John Caire, produced a tourist booklet on the area around "The Hermitage" in 1913. Maurice Keppel, from Ireland, was one of the first landholders in the newly surveyed town of Marysville in 1864. He and his wife ran the successful Keppel’s Australian Hotel. Two of their sons, John and Jerry, established a farm and opened up the surrounding high country. The Keppel lease was one of the longest held in the high country and the Keppel Family were amongst Marysville's pioneering families.maurice keppel, keppel family, keppel's australian hotel, marysville, victoria, john william lindt, conrad wagner, australian aboriginals, batchelder & co, nicholas john caire, anna lindt -

Melbourne RoyalAward - Trophy, E. IRVING CO, The Borthwick Trophy, 1953
... The Borthwick Trophy Award Trophy E. IRVING CO. ...Improving meat production In 1905, the English firm Thomas Borthwick & Son set up operations in Australia. Borthwick was a major meat exporter and ran freezing works as well as having its own cattle stations in Australia. From the early 19th century, Borthwick encouraged the production of quality beef by awarding prizes at agricultural shows throughout Australia. In the early 1950s the Australian Meat Board and The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) also took steps to encourage beef producers. Perpetual Trophy For the Coronation Show in 1953, Borthwick introduced a perpetual trophy. The Borthwick Trophy was awarded to the Fat Cattle Champion with the winner being judged from the best team of three steers under three years old. The winning team was the one that gained the highest aggregate score from both the live and carcase judging. Initially, the relevant winning Breed Society retained the trophy for a year and returned it for the following Royal Melbourne Show but the Borthwick Trophy is now displayed at the Melbourne Royal offices on the Melbourne Showgrounds. (Mandy Bede) The competition is now known as the competition between teams of three purebred steers in the Beef Carcase competition. There can be one team per beef cattle breed in the competition.Large silver cup with three handles, each flat at the top and then curving around the outside of the cup and rejoining before the cup's stem.THE BORTHWICK TROPHY. / PRESENTED TO / THE ROYAL AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY OF VICTORIA / BY / THOMAS BORTHWICK & SONS (A/ASIA) LTD, / FOR / ANNUAL COMPETITION BETWEEN TEAMS OF / FAT STEERS, / REPRESETNING BEEF CATTLE BREEDS / AT / THE MELBOURNE ROYAL SHOW / [various winning breeds]cattle, beef carcase, melbourne royal beef carcase competition, beef, perpetual, perpetual trophy, borthwick, prize, blue ribbon competition -
The Beechworth Burke MuseumDecorative object - Clock, Seth Thomas Clock Company, 01/01/1881
... After Seth Thomas's death, his son, also Seth Thomas (1816-1888), continued operating the business. ...The Seth Thomas Clock Company was founded in 1813 by renowned American clockmaker Seth Thomas (1785-1859) of Connecticut, USA, and pioneered the mass production of clocks. After Seth Thomas's death, his son, also Seth Thomas (1816-1888), continued operating the business. Their 'Adamantine' model was released in many variations. This particular model features two pillars on either side of the clockface, however other Adamantine variants could have none or up to three or four half-pillars on either side. This style of black mantle clock appears to be inspired by French clocks of the 1860s, which had gained popularity in the United States. While those clocks were often made with onyx, slate, or marble, Seth Thomas uses a durable celluloid veneer named Adamantine over a wood case to replicate the appearance of the original materials. This object is representative of the innovative manufacturing processes of pioneering clockmaker Seth Thomas and his company. These visits provided the ship's chaplain John Milner (1822-97) and the artist Oswald Brierly (1817-94) with ample material for this chronicle, published in 1869, which gives background details of each region alongside scenes from the tour, enhanced by illustrations based on Brierly's sketches. The authors drew on various recollections and writings, including a letter from Alfred to his brother describing an elephant hunt in South Africa. The tour was abruptly curtailed in Sydney when a Fenian sympathiser attempted to assassinate the prince, an act which boosted support for the British royal family.
