One photo from an album belonging to JB McLean, of his voyage home from World War 1 in 1920 on the Ceramic. The photo shows Egyptian traders by the side of the Suez Canal. The Ceramic departed Tillbury, UK 12th March and docked in Freemantle on 27th April 1920 and then went onto Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. The Ceramic was a transport vessel built in Belfast in 1913 for the White Star Line to transport frozen produce and apples from Australia to UK. It was taken over by the Australian Government for troop transport in October 1914 and could carry over 3,000 troops. This trip in 1920 there were 1467 on board, there were women and children as well as 439 soldiers returning home, one of whom was John 'Basil' McLean. Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. There was a large collection of postcards so he may have been collecting them as souvenirs. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving Portsea in 1920.A collection of items from John Basil McLean is in the archive. Group of debutantes with partners and Mr. Stan Dewar and Mrs. Marie Dewar (on his right) at St. Francis Xavier Debutante Ball, Kew Town Hall in 1966. The lady on his left is chaperone Mary Hancock. The 1966 annual Parish Ball of St. Francis Xavier's Box Hill and St. Clare's Box Hill North, was held at Kew City Hall. Host Mr. R. Daffy, O.B.E. and Mrs Daffy welcomed more than 400 guests. Official guests to the ball included Rev. Fr. Conquest, P.P., and Rev. Fr. Deakin, of St Francis Xavier's, Rev. Fr. Kelly and Rev. Fr. Martin of St Clare's, Rev. Brs. Doolan, Principal and Rev. Br. The Ballarat School of Mines traditionally had a strong Australian Rules Football team. The 1982 team included Tony Lockett who went on to play at the highest level becoming the highest goal scorer in the history of the VFL/AFL with 1,360 goals in a career of 281 games, that commenced in 1983 with the St Kilda Football Club, and finished in 2002 with the Sydney Swans. Lockett is the only full-forward ever to win the coveted Brownlow Medal, in 1987, a season in which he was decorated with several honours. He is a four-time Coleman Medallist, kicked more than 100 goals in a season on six occasions (an AFL record), and is a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Peach coloured nylon nightgown made by HANRO Bendigo. Bodice gathered at front onto a plaited band under the bust. On each side of the band three ties (102cm) extend from the ends of the plaited band. Shoulder straps made up of three pieces of nylon tubing attached back and front and plaited over each shoulder. Back of bodice in two pieces. Ankle length A line skirt. Colour at bodice is pale peach colour that darkens as it descends to the hem where it becomes a deep orange colour. Nightie given to donor by her grandmother who received the nightie as a prize at a Hanro meeting. Harrison, Mayor of the City of Ballaarat, dated 2nd May 1932 of the "brave deed" of Mr. Charles Foster, ESCo driver who rescued a small boy from in front of a tramcar. Council complimented him on his bravery and recommended a letter be sent. Has been a typed original, has number 334 in top right hand corner. Yields information about one of the first two maximum traction bogie trams in Ballarat in October 1945 after it had been repainted for use in Ballarat by the SEC and the Lake / depot area at the time.Black and white photograph of SEC No. 15 in Wendouree Parade just to the south of St. Aidans Drive. Photo taken looking south with the trolley pole to the camera in the raised position. Appears to be a new trolley rope. Tram has destination of "Gardens via Drummond Nth". Possibly taken soon after receipt and repainting in Ballarat in 1945. "The Ballarat Tramways" notes that No. 15 arrived in Ballarat October 1945 and was renumbered to No. 36 in 1953.
