The Holy Name Society was prominent in Ballarat until the reforms of Vatican II. It promoted reverence for the Name of Jesus Christ, and abhorrence of blasphemy, profanity, and immorality. By the 1950s membership of the society in Australia numbered in excess of 100,000. The Holy Name Society was a male society although where it still survives it now welcomes both Catholic men and women.Blue silk banner trimmed in gilt braid the lower edge handkerchief cut with gold fringing. gilt cord with gilt tassle ends to either side. The society logo of the Chiros appliqued in the centre with the words of the Roman Emperor Constantine "In this sign we shall conquer", embroidered on a scroll beneath. The elaborate fancy cotton braid known as Cornelli work on this jacket is a technique of embroidery or applique of cotton thread and braid that became popular in the nineteenth century. It was used on French doll's clothing where elaborate the Cornelli wear was stitched on for decoration. The examples used in this family also included that on men's railway uniforms and bandsmen's uniforms. This jacket belonged to Eleanor Burke (nee McKew) Mrs Mary Taffe's mother and came to Hymettus at Ballarat when she arrived here to live from Donald with husband Michael in 1945.This jacket displays elaborate fancy cotton stitching and braid known as Cornelli work, a technique of embroidery or applique of cotton thread and braid that became popular in the nineteenth century. The sailing ship was the symbol of the Pilots, the children's organisation of the Congregational Union and London Missionary Society. Congregational Minister's black stole with black fringing at each end. The stole has two round silk embroidered applique badges of a sailing ship at each end. The ship is brown and is on a royal blue sea with a pale blue sky. The sails are detailed in gold thread and the badge has a gold braid border. Mrs William Wright operated a shop at 95 Liebig street Warrnambool around the turn of the 20th century, where she sold clothing as well as a large range of embroidery and needlework requirement.Some of the work listed in advertisements include shadow work,princess applique and Mount mellick work. She was an experienced and talented needleworker and held classes in a range of work. Mrs Wright advertised that her students had success at local shows in items such as shadow work,, embroidered blouse, best cosy, canvas work, novelty pincushion,floss silk work.Her name was Martha but she always traded under her husband's name. She died in 1952. This dish is a a simple reminder of Mrs Wright This pin dish provides a link with one of Warrnambool's early shopholders and needlewomen. She is featured in a soon to be released publication about women in Warrnambool called Silent Lives. The dress was made by Mrs Alloway of Coburg. The dress was made from two dresses which appeared in 'The Bride' magazine; the top from one photo and the skirt from another. Joan Lorraine McGahey wore this dress when she married Francis William Kerry on 28/03/1959.1959 Full length white lace and net over white taffeta slip. Long sleeves are lace to wrist and has light covered buttons. Front has square neckline with lace appliqued to bodice which falls to dropped waistline. This RAAF uniform is believed to have belonged to Flying Officer Russell Miller, the son of William and Muriel Miller of Warrnambool. Russell Miller attended Warrnambool High School and worked for the Warrnambool City Council before enlisting in World War 11. He was killed in flying operations over Germany in 1944. Died 28 Sept 1944. Remembered at Rheinburg War Cemetery, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. The two sleeves have metal insignia and black and cream braiding. Above the front left pocket is a stitched blue and white applique. The jacket has a cloth belt with a rusted metal buckle. .2 The trousers are made of navy blue wool with two pockets, a buttoned fly and there are six buttons evenly stitched around the waist band. The wedding gown was worn by Lucy Kneeshaw Prout for her marriage to John Sommers on 29th November, 1871 at Trinity Church of England and Ireland, Williamstown, Victoria. Lucy was born in Woolwich, Kent, England in August 1850 and immigrated to Australia with her family in 1852 on the 'SS Coromandel'. She was the youngest of five children. Their parents were Edward and Elizabeth Prout (nee Hall). Lucy died in 1940 - 90 years of age. John E. Sommers was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1846 and emigrated to Australia with his family in June 1853 on the 'Tongataboo'. His marriage certificate shows that he was an engineer. He studied at the National Gallery's School of Design under both Clark and Campbell from 1872 to 1879. He drew a compressed charcoal and pencil portrait of Fred McCubbin in 1876. The portrait was displayed in the Golden Summers exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1985 and is shown on page 40 of the Golden Summers catalogue. Their grand-daughter, Mrs Marjorie Gibson (born 1910) said he was associated with the Heidelberg School and the Box Hill Artists Camp. He is also noted in the 'Book of Australian Artists'. He exhibited prolifically with the Victorian Artists Society until his resignation in 1898. In 1881 John Sommers took employment with the Education Department at Castlemaine (Ref. Golden Summer catalogue - pages 26 and 40). John died in 1930 aged 84 years. John and Lucy Sommers children John and Dora both studied at the National Gallery of Victoria, so senior was added to John E. Sommers Senior's works.
