... . An Edwardian or Victorian style house can be seen on the corner... looking towards Canterbury Road. An Edwardian or Victorian style ...Date is approximate; early Empire Day celebrations were held in May each year between 1906 and 1911 to commemorate Queen Victoria's birthday. Headmaster, George Bennett was later headmaster at Balwyn State School, which his son Gordon (later General Gordon Bennett) attended. Miss Amy Wise was a teacher at Surrey Hills State School for her entire career. (There is information in filing cabinet re Amy Wise). Note (undated) from John Reaburn states that an issue of SHNN claimed Major General Bennett was a pupil at SHPS. He stated: "I very much doubt this, as he was 19 years of age when his father was headmaster in 1906. Before that the whole family attended Balwyn State School. The statement should be substantiated or corrected".Black and white photo copied from a postcard of staff and students assembled outside Surrey Hills Primary School for Empire Day celebrations. Some children carry Union Jack flags. The cadet corps of the school stands in line on the path against the picket fence of the school carrying drums and 'rifles'. The male students are assembled in line at the edge of the road and the female students are assembled in the middle of the road. There are a number of adults in the background, presumably teachers and parents; two are identified. Centre is headmaster, Mr George Bennett and at the right is teacher, Miss Amy Wise. The photo is taken in Beatrice Avenue looking towards Canterbury Road. An Edwardian or Victorian style house can be seen on the corner of Beatrice Avenue and Canterbury Road.Within the original image: State School, Surrey Hillssurrey hills primary school, empire day celebrations, education, primary education, schools, cadets, beatrice avenue, post card, mr george bennett, miss amy wise, mr john reaburn -

David selected a number of sites or buildings identified in the study, some of them lesser known components of the Shire's heritage. The tour commenced at the Eltham Shire Office at 10.00 am. Travel was by private car and mini-bus with stops at about twelve locations for commentary by David. It included a short walk in Hurstbridge and lunch at Kinglake. Highlights of the tour included: - 10 am Leave from Shire Offices - 3 Important Trees - A Physical Link to Eltham's First Settlers - Toorak Mansion Gates - A Surviving Farm House - An Intact Circa 1900 Main Street - First Settlers - Gold Miners, and Timber-getters - An Early Hotel - A Pioneering Homestead - Changing Eltham Shire - 20th Century - 4 pm Afternoon Tea and Finish Tour Extract from ELTHAM CULTURAL HERITAGE TOUR (Newsletter No. 85, July 1992, by Bettina Woodburn) "On a right-angle turning of the Eltham Road is Wellers Pub, a Cobb & Co. coaching stop on the way to distant gold-fields and places north of the Yarra River. The Hotel dates from the 1870's. Daily distances for a bullock team was eight miles, horses could do double that distance. We turned into Cassells Road and on the corner of Ingrams Road we admired an elaborate Edwardian villa, 1900 style. The Aqueduct conveying Melbourne's water supply was a communication line and a technological advance in 1891. It has been enlarged and re-faced and no longer used here but piped underground. Proclaimed a linear park it has reverted to crown land, controlled by local Council. Maroondah Dam was constructed in. 1920 to replace the original weir and at that time: the Aqueduct - as established into the landscape - with bridges and tunnels and pine trees were used to stop rubbish polluting the water."Record of the Society's history and activities and highlighting various aspects of the Heritage Study undertaken by David Bick used to create the future heritage overlay for the Shire of Eltham and later Nillumbik Shire.Roll of 35mm colour negative film, 4 stripsKodak Gold 100 5095shire of eltham historical society, activities, heritage tour, ingrams road, research (vic.) -

Ceremonial object - Clothing, 'Jabot' style collar and cuffs Moorabbin City Council Mayoral Robes, c1960
In clothing, a collar is the part of a shirt, dress, coat or blouse that fastens around or frames the neck and may be permanently attached to the main body of the garment (e.g. by stitching) or detachable. Today's shirt collars descend from the ruffle created by the drawstring at the neck of the medieval chemise, through the Elizabethan ruff and its successors, the whisk collar and falling band. Separate collars exist alongside attached collars since the mid-16th century, usually to allow starching and other fine finishing. Jabots made of lace and hanging loose from the neck were an essential component of upper class, male fashion in the baroque period. During the Edwardian period, and sporadically thereafter, ornamental collars were worn as a form of jewellery. Names for specific styles of collars vary with the vagaries of fashion. Jabots survive in the present days as components of various official costumes, as are those worn by judges and counsel throughout Australian courts and town mayors. 2018 Kingston City Council Mayor Steve Staikos asked CMHS to loan the Former Moorabbin Mayoral Robes and Jabot for display at KCC Office Cheltenham. These Moorabbin Mayoral Robe with Jabot are now displayed along with those of the former City of Chelsea Robe and the former City of Mordialloc Robe at Cheltenham . KCC possesses the original Mayoral Chains of each former Council and they are displayed on each Robe for the annual Opening Meeting of KCC in February. This set of a 'Jabot' style collar and cuffs was part of the ceremonial Mayoral Robes c1960- 94 for the City of Moorabbin 1934-94. This is the last City of Moorabbin Mayoral Robe and was worn by Mayor Ron Brownlees, (prior to amalgamation with the City of Glen Eira and City of Kingston in 1994), and donated to the City of Moorabbin Historical Society in February 2007 by the City of Kingston. The City of Moorabbin developed from the Moorabbin Roads Board of 1862, becoming The Shire of Moorabbin in 1871 and the City of Moorabbin in 1934. November 2018 At the request of the Mayor Cr Steve Staikos this Jabot Collar and Cuffs is now on display with the Mayoral Robes at Kingston City Council Offices Nepean Highway Cheltenham . Clothing - Apron, circa late19th to early 20th Century
An apron is an outer protective garment worn over clothes to cover the front of the body. In Victorian and Edwardian times, women were using aprons for both utility (they were easier to wash than dresses) and fashion and women's magazines and pattern companies were offering patterns to allow women to be to sew their own aprons at home. There are different styles of aprons including bib aprons, waist or half aprons, pinafores, tabards and pinner aprons. The word "apron" comes from the old French word "naperon" which means a napkin or small tablecloth. This apron is one of two similar aprons that were donated from the estate of Susan Henry nee Vedmore (1944 - 2021). It is in very good condition and appears to be more decorative (and possibly used only on special occasions) rather than everyday wear. Susan's family (Harold and Gladys Vedmore) immigrated to Australia from Wales in 1955 and settled in Warrnambool. Susan was well known in the Warrnambool community for her work supporting children and families across the district - particular those with disabilities, or those who were homeless, unemployed or isolated. Susan was the founding trustee of the "Vedmore Foundation" - a Warrnambool philanthropic trust set up in 2010 to support a range of charitable and not-for-profit causes by providing grant assistance. Clothing - Petticoat, late 19th century to early 20th century
This petticoat was one of several items donated from the estate of Susan Henry OAM nee Vedmore (1944 - 2021). It is in very good condition and appears to be from the Edwardian era - early 20th century. A petticoat is a lady's undergarment - worn under a skirt or dress. They provided warmth, modesty and shape to the dress. In the middle of the 19th century, petticoats were worn over hoops, bustles or in layers. Petticoats varied according to the style of the outside skirt or dress. Plain petticoats tended to be worn with everyday wear whilst better dresses (party dresses or silk gowns) were worn with petticoats that often had more trim and embellishments. Edwardian petticoats had less volume than Victorian era petticoats and they had a "dust ruffle" or lining under a lace flounce. The "dust ruffle" protected the lace flounce and gave the petticoat more flare at the bottom, greater freedom when walking as well as saving the flounce (which was often made of finer material) from everyday wear and tear. Tucks are another feature of Edwardian petticoats - when the lace at the bottom became worn, it could be cut off and the tucks released. This extended the life of the petticoat. This petticoat features an intricate trim of broderie anglaise. Although broderie anglaise was a lace that could be made by hand, it was very time consuming to make. St Gallen was a city in Switzerland that had become known for producing quality textiles. At the beginning of the 19th century, the first embroidery machines were developed in St Gallen. Factories used embroidery machines but people also had them in their homes. They were able to produce broderie anglaise for export. By the early 20th century, machine made lace, fabric, ribbons etc. were being sold in drapers shops all over England and Wales to women who were making clothes and furnishings for their families. It is highly likely that the lady who made this petticoat brought the lengths of broderie anglaise already made to embellish and personalise her petticoat. In 2021, she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the community. This item is an example of the needlework skills of women in the late 19th century - creating pintucks and adding lace to personalise and embellish a practical item of clothing. It is also significant as an example of a practical solution to the difficulties that women of this era faced with regard to the washing of clothes and household linens.A white lawn petticoat with a 22.5 cm opening that fastens with 2 small buttons and a drawstring tie. It is decorated with two wide pintucks followed by two gathered frills (or flounces) - one decorated with three rows of narrow pintucks and a single row of broderie anglaise and the bottom frilled hem finished with 3 rows of broderie anglaise in a flower design. Clothing - Double Cape with Collar, Late 19th century
The cape is of a style from the Victorian or the Edwardian Era and so provides a good example of women's clothing from that time. The light colour, silk material and lace suggest a cape used for special occasions with the possibility of initially being a wedding cape. The item is of significance historically and socially as an example of women's clothing in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.Ladies cape consisting of two circular tiers and a collar. The inner tier is knee length with a thin lace insert around the hem. The outer tier is elbow length with a wide lace edge and the thin lace insert inside this. The collar has lace edging and a lace insert of the same width. The lace used is of a repeat flower pattern most likely made of a combination of silk and cotton. The cape material appears to be a cream ribbed silk with the lining being of a polished cotton or silk variety. Both materials have a silken sheen in the right light. A silk ribbon ties the cape at the neck. The lining and lace have been sewn with fine hand stitching.flagstaff hill, warrnambool, maritime village, maritime museum, flagstaff hill maritime museum and village, shipwreck coast, great ocean road, ladies cape, double cape, silk cape, layered cape, cape with lace collar, decorative lace edging, victorian era, edwardian era -

Clothing - Bodice, 1900's
This bodice is stiffened by what is commonly referred to as natural whalebone, but is actually baleen, which was in use from the 18th century through to the Edwardian era. It was hand sewn in Warrnambool in the 1900's.The bodice is significant for demonstrating the use of historical whalebone, or technically baleen, for its stays. This practice was used from the 18th century through to the Edwardian era.The bodice is made of gold cotton over the whalebone stays at the waistline. It is trimmed in brown fabric and has twenty-two buttons down the front from top to bottom. The sleeves are Leg-o'-mutton style. The bodice has pin tucks down the front. Domestic object - Basket, 1890-1920s
Before the invention of woven baskets, people used tree bark to make simple containers. These containers could be used to transport gathered food and other items but crumbled after only a few uses. Weaving strips of bark or other plant material to support the bark containers would be the next step, followed by entirely woven baskets. The last innovation appears to be baskets so tightly woven that they could hold water. Depending on soil conditions, baskets may or may not be preserved in the archaeological record. Sites in the Middle East show that weaving techniques were used to make mats and possibly also baskets, circa 8000 BCE. Twined baskets date back to 7000 in Oasisamerica. Baskets made with interwoven techniques were common at 3000 BCE. Baskets were originally designed as multi-purpose vessels to carry and store materials and to keep stray items about the home. The plant life available in a region affects the choice of material, which in turn influences the weaving technique. Rattan and other members of the Arecaceae or palm tree family, the thin grasses of temperate regions, and broad-leaved tropical bromeliads each require a different method of twisting and braiding to be made into a basket. The practice of basket making has evolved into an art. Artistic freedom allows basket makers with a wide choice of colours, materials, sizes, patterns, and details. Before the advent of plastics (1907), the is now used for many different types and styles of storage container rattan, wicker or cane was used to make containers with a lid for the storage of linens etc. The subject item was probability used at the end of the Victorian era and into the Edwardian period around the 1900s as a household storage facility. These types of wicker or cane containers started to go out of fashion due to their fragility around the 1920s into the 1940s due as well to the introduction of synthetic materials. Document - DUDLEY HOUSE COLLECTION: NOTES ON DUDLEY HOUSE, 1850s
Document on foolscap paper some notes on Dudley House Bendigo Victoria, Australia courtesy of Mr Geoffrey, C. Ingleton father was the former Town Clerk of Bendigo, appointed 1 January 1924. The layout of the building at ground floor level involved the removal of walls along the left side from the entrance creating one large room. Alterations required replacement of doors, 1920's style , with decorative glass panels and door knobs of the period. This report contains excellent descriptions of furniture installed at the house, including a grandfather clock, framed etchings, easy chairs with loose floral covers, and a number of 'occasional chairs' of Rose-wood or Cedar in Edwardian design. The furniture was purchased from Morley Johnson of Bendigo and Sydney. There were also china cabinets, a gramophone in a large upright rose-wood cabriole-shaped cabinet. The name Dudley house may have been earned by reputation, or had a connection to a former tenant - perhaps a State Official or a caretaker.bendigo, history, dudley house -

Photograph - Double-fronted Edwardian Villa, c.1918
The Kew Historical Society's map collection includes a substantial number of real estate subdivision plans, mainly of Kew but also of surrounding suburbs in Melbourne. Most of the subdivision plans date from the 1920s and 1930s when the districts old homes and local farmland were being split up to accommodate residential growth in the postwar period. These early plans were assembled by a local firm, Jas R Mather & McMillan, which had an office in Cotham Road. Many of the plans, and sometimes photos, were annotated by the agents.Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence for the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens. The photograph may also be aesthetically significant depending on the importance of the photographic atelier. On the reverse of a subdivision plan of the Palmyra Estate (Kew) is a photograph of a double-fronted Edwardian villa. The weatherboard and stucco house with high brick chimneys provides a clear indication of the style of curtains and gardens in houses of the period. Holland blinds with lace inserts are used in the left front window. They are combined with long lace curtains. The garden, with its curved pathway is bordered with garden beds that include marguerite daisies and roses. Reflecting a new interest in the Australian landscape, tree ferns and ground ferns are planted closer to the house.houses - kew, architecture - edwardian, real estate photographs -

Slide - House, cnr Fellows and Barry Streets, 1979
One of a group of slides taken by members of the Society of built heritage in Kew in 1979-80. The selection of subject matter reflects the priorities of the period. The colour of some slides has degraded. This particular slide is of 'Fairholme' on the corner of Barry and Fellows Street. The building is listed by the National Trust (Victoria). The citation on the Historic Buildings Register states: 'Fairholme is of State architectural significance as a distinctive free Romanesque Revival residence. Built in two stages, 1889 for solicitor Edward Smart and early this century for importer, J K Meritt, the singular architectural character of Fairholme is achieved by combining window bays and groups of windows with a two-storey gabled porch. The deliberate and distinctively asymmetrical composition is emphasised by Art Nouveau pressed cement detailing (coprosma) on a bowed balcony and the two-storey timber verandah, which is typical of the Edwardian period. The architects were Reed, Henderson & Smart (1889) and C Gordon McCrae (c 1900-1). Internally a grand entry hall with inglenook, staircase and gallery follow the Arts and Crafts quality of the exterior. Classified: 17/03/1993'The slides represent a snapshot in time of built architecture in Kew, much of which has changed in the forty-plus period since they were created. 35mm colour transparency (slide) of 'Fairholme' (1889) on the north-east corner of the intersection of Fellows and Barry Streets, Kew. Drawing - Property Illustration, 180 Brougham Street, Kew, 1990
After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German). The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. Photographs - Williamstown Botanic Gardens, 1936
Ernest Anderson (head gardener) and Harry (gardener) worked at Williamstown Botanic Gardens. The Anderson family lived in the curators lodge on the grounds in the 1930s. Horses were used at the gardens until the 1960s when the council bought a truck. Mr Biggs drove as Mr Anderson did not have a licence. He rode his bike to the Town Hall every Friday to put in the time sheets. The collection is the only known photos of the Gardens working horses and demonstrates Edwardian Municipal gardening techniques that continued into the 1960s. They are photographic evidence of the planting styles, species choices and structures. Details inscribed on the reverse of some of the photos confirm names of staff at this time.
