Soldier Harry Holmes of Ascot, Victoria sent this postcard to his family while serving in the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) in France. HENRY SMERDON (Harry) HOLMES was born in 1897 at the family property, ’Sauchieburn’, 17 km north of Ballarat, in the Ascot district. He was the youngest of four children. After finishing his education at St Patrick’s College, Ballarat, Henry joined the Holmes family farming interests. At the age of 18 he enlisted and served with AIF in Egypt, France and Belgium 1915-1918. Henry served at the famous battlegrounds of Ypes and Somme in the Australian Army 8th Battalion. He was a Driver with the 4th D.A.C. The postcard is of "The Ascot" boys. These shoes were worn by Emily Cock (nee Smith), the daughter of wealthy early settler John Matthew Smith. From 1856 until 1931 the Smiths lived at 'Castlefield', a mansion on a vast estate that at one time stretched along South Road from Bluff Road to Hampton Street. The land was gradually subdivided, and the house is now a part of Haileybury College. Julien Mayer was a French ladies shoemaker and prolific exporter who advertised his successes on the shoes themselves by stamping the soles with details of the prizes he had won.Pair of black kid leather shoes with low block heel, decorated with pink silk, cut-away applique and embroidery. Hugh Jeffrey attended the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at Melbourne University, graduating in 1940. This cloth patch would have formed the breast pocket of Mr Jeffrey's university blazer. The Melbourne University blazer is traditionally black with blue stripes, and organisations such as the Boat Club, Cricket Club or, in this case, the Student Union, would have their particular logo or badge embroidered on the pocket. The logo on this patch is a version of the University of Melbourne coat of arms - with the angel Victory embroidered in white on a black background, offering her laurel wreath. This blazer was worn by Joyce Murphy at the Ballarat Teacher's College. David van Leeuwen decided not to have a blazer as he was older, and thought it too much like school days. He attended the Ballarat Teachers' College when 27 years, after serving in the army. Because he didn’t have a blazer he didn’t have anywhere to put the colours so he offered them to Joyce Murphy as they were going out together. There should have been a football embroidery as well, but Joyce Murphy didn’t want that on her blazer because it was too boyish. The pocket is a dual one. Joyce van Leeuwen remembers: 'Towards the end of our College year, were were given written authorisation denoting our sporting teams, to take to Paterson & Powell for embroidery on our blazer pockets. On my pocket, the hockey sticks, the BB for basketball, as netball was then called, all mine. The tennis racquet is David's [van Leeuwen], as is the braid topping the pocket denoting the College colours. College colours were authorised for excellence in a chosen sport, and in our year, 1950, only two men's colours were awarded - David's for basketball and Neil Trezise's for football. The Rats of Tobruk were soldiers of the Australian-led Allied garrison that held the Libyan port of Tobruk against the Afrika Corps, during the Siege of Tobruk in World War II. The siege started on 11 April 1941 and was relieved on 10 December. The port continued to be held by the Allies until its surrender on 21 June 1942. HUTCHINS, Mervyn Arthur Thomas VX27912 Born in Mornington, Victoria, October 1906, Mervyn joined the Australian Armed Forces in Caulfield in June 1940. Mervyn was posted with the 2/23rd Battalion and was sent to Tobruk. He died at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital in the 1970'sMervyn Hutchins owned this jacket. Considered to be the leading house of fashion in Warrnambool, Miss Emery employed about eight young women who worked long hours to sew elaborate gowns for clients, including wives of graziers who would attend the race carnivals and social functions in Warrnambool. I have been interested in urban design and landscape since a child. My early fascination with maps corresponded to early mark making inspired by maps, topography, legends and aerial depictions. This developed into the use of a bold colour palette often used by map makers to delineate sections, contours and geology. Over time I experimented with a range of techniques and enjoy pushing expected techniques and materials to their limits. Often referred to as having a natural aesthetic, my works use various media, most often paint, textiles and photography. Lisa J.
