ALVINA The new pilot steamer Alvina, which was recently purchased by the Port Phillip Sea pilots, was inspected on Thursday last by the members of the Victorian Marine Board and a number of gentlemen representing the leading shipping companies in Melbourne. The Alvina was formally the private yacht of Mr Marmaduke Fox a wealthy Yorkshire gentleman and is a trim craft of 145 tons register and a length of 18ft overall. Hitherto the sea pilots have managed to do their work with one steamer, the Victoria but it has long been apparent that a second vessel was required. The pilots upon whom the obligation of providing and maintaining their vessels devolves, thereupon made a successful bid for the yacht and, by an additional outlay of 700 pound, had her overhauled and refitted in Deane's Dock, Williamstown. On Thursday last the vessel made a trial trip to Point Cook for the purpose of satisfying the Marine Board and the underwriters as to her fitness for the work. She showed a speed of 11 knots and steamed smoothly and satisfactorily. During the trip the visitors assembled in the saloon and drank success to the new steamer. Captain Carrie, president of the Marine Board, congratulated the pilots on their acquisition, and said that the service was now second to none in the world. The new vessel which has been in the charge of Captain Wills is handsomely fitted up and contains two staterooms and four cabins for the pilots and sleeping accommodation for a crew of eight. In future one steamer will remain on the pilot grounds inside the Heads while the other will steam about outside Queenscliff. Elizabeth Gregory boarded at Clarendon PLC 1951-1952. The senior champion was the fastest runner. Elizabeth remembers running laps of the CPLC oval in bare feet to compete for this title. She won the Senior Siamese, ran second in the senior 75 yards and first in the senior 175 yards. First curator's cottage, was built in the gardens early 1860's, later moved to 1414 Gregory St, now relocated back to the Northern Gardens and used by the "Friends of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens" for meetings and Botanikids activities.The Cottage is important as an early structure in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. It is one of the early works of the Ballarat pioneer architect, Cassini. Its removal from Gregory Street back to the Gardens is testament to the generosity and enthusiasm of the Friends of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Its renovation was funded by the Ballarat City Council and the Friends of the Botanic Gardens as an important landmark from the past. It is now visited, used and enjoyed by the community. This book is titled "The Romance of the "Edina" and was written by author C. Dickson Gregory (Charles Dickson Gregory) in 1935. The author has also written, "Australian Steamships Past and Present". This book also contains (1) The Port Phillip Bay Steamers from 1850 to 1935 (2) The history of the celebrated auxiliary steamship "Great Britain." ABOUT THE S S EDINA The three-masted iron screw steamer SS Edina was built in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1854 by Barclay and Curle. She was adorned with the figurehead of ‘fair maid of Judea’. The many years of service made SS Edina famous world-wide as the longest-serving screw steamer. (The term screw steamer comes from being driven by a single propeller, sometimes called a screw, driven by a steam engine.) SS Edina’s interesting history includes English Chanel runs, serving in the Crimean Ware carrying ammunition, horses and stores to the Black Sea, and further service in the American Civil War and later, serving in the western district of Victoria as well as in Queensland and carried gold, currency and gold prospectors Australia to New Zealand. SS Edina had the privilege of being an escort vessel to H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh during his visit to Australia in 1867. In March 1863 SS Edina arrived in Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne and was bought by Stephen Henty, of Portland fame, to work the cargo and passenger run from Melbourne – Warrnambool – Port Fairy - Portland. After a short time of working the run from Australia to New Zealand, with passengers and cargo that included gold and currency, she returned to her Melbourne - Warrnambool – Port Fairy run, with cargo including bales of wool produced in the western district of Victoria. The Warrnambool Steam Packet Company purchased SS Edina in 1867; she was now commanded by Captain John Thompson and Chief Engineer John Davies. She survived several mishaps at sea, had a complete service and overhaul and several changes of commanders. In 1870 SS Edina was in Lady Bay, Warrnambool, when a gale sprung up and caused a collision with the iron screw steamer SS Dandenong. SS Edina’s figurehead was broken into pieces and it was not ever replaced. SS Edina was re-fitted in 1870 than was used as a coastal trader in Queensland for a period. She was then brought to Melbourne to carry cargo and passengers between Melbourne and Geelong and performed this service 1880-1938. During this time (1917) she was again refitted with a new mast, funnel, bridge and promenade deck, altering her appearance. In 1938, after more collisions, SS Edina was taken out of service. However, she was later renamed Dinah and used as a ‘lighter’ (a vessel without engine or superstructure) to be towed and carry wool and general cargo between Melbourne and Geelong. In 1957, after 104 years, the SS Edina was broken up at Footscray, Melbourne. Remains of SS Edina’s hull can be found in the Maribyrnong River, Port Phillip Bay. "A plan to turn the Gregory Street silos into apartments is no more.Developers Eleveno Pty Ltd have abandoned plans to transform the Lake Wendouree silos into a giant apartment complex, despite previously being given the green light from the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.Director Richard Sykes yesterday confirmed the silos would be demolished."The plans are not proceeding. The plan now is to create residential houses," he said.The planning permit for an 18-lot subdivision was approved by Ballarat City Council on July 22, despite objections lodged against the application.Mr Sykes said it wasn't feasible to turn the silos into 27 units and there were many factors behind the decision."They're being demolished for various reasons, there were just better solutions," he said.Bold plans to transform the former Joe White Maltings silos into apartments were first submitted to Ballarat City Council in January 2007.However, developers took the proposal to VCAT in September 2008 after council failed to make a decision in the required 60-day timeframe.A hearing was held in early 2009 and the development was approved in March last year.Mr Sykes said it was found that the building would most likely be out of place in the region."We found the market didn't really want that sort of development," he said."They're probably more suited for inner-city development, rather than regional areas."Mr Sykes did not put a price on either the proposed development or the demolition, but said it would "cost a fair amount of money".He said once the demolition permit has been passed, works were expected to begin in November."
