Nearly a million copies of Chickenhawk have been sold since it was first published in 1983. Now with a new afterword and photos from the author, this straight-from-the-shoulder account tells the truth about the helicopter war in Vietnam, and a personal story of men under fire. Robert Mason, a veteran of more than one thousand combat missions, gives descriptions that cut to the heart of the combat experience: the fear and belligerence, the quiet insights and raging madness, the lasting friendships and sudden death -- the extreme emotions of a "chickenhawk" in constant danger.p.399.non-fictionNearly a million copies of Chickenhawk have been sold since it was first published in 1983. John Murray, The four feathers, 1936
Just before his regiment sails off to war in the Sudan, British officer Harry Feversham quits the military. He is immediately given four white feathers - symbols of cowardice - one each by his three best friends and one by his fiancee. To disprove this grave dishonor, Harry dons an Arabian disguise and leaves for the Sudan, where he anonymously comes to the aid of his three friends, saving each of their lives. Having proved his bravery, Harry returns to England, hoping to regain the love and respect of his fiancee. This suspenseful tale movingly depicts a distinctive code of honor that - whether real or imagined - was deeply valued and strongly promoted by the British during the height of their imperial power.p.316fictionJust before his regiment sails off to war in the Sudan, British officer Harry Feversham quits the military. Book, David Mason, Marching with the devil: Legends, glory and lies in the French foreign legion, 2010
Based on his diaries, this is a frank account of how Mason came first in French Foreign Legion basic training, trained other Legionnaires, went to Africa, did sniper, commando and medic's training and took part in two operations, both in the Republic of Djibouti, where a civil war nearly crippled the nation. It tells of his daily life in the Legion, in the training regiment, in Africa and with the Legion's Parachute Regiment. But more than this, David's gripping account reveals his disillusionment, frustration and disappointments, and how the Legion today is not what it seems.Ill, p.380.non-fictionBased on his diaries, this is a frank account of how Mason came first in French Foreign Legion basic training, trained other Legionnaires, went to Africa, did sniper, commando and medic's training and took part in two operations, both in the Republic of Djibouti, where a civil war nearly crippled the nation.
