Bendigo TAFE is a regional provider of vocational education, training and assessment services, located in northern and central Victoria, Australia. The institute has been in operation in various guises since 1854. The institute was known as the Loddon Campaspe Institute of TAFE from 1987 to 1990, Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE (BRIT) from 1990 to 2009, before becoming Bendigo TAFE in 2009. Bendigo TAFE services a significant geographical area of approximately 25,000 square kilometres in central and northern Victoria, with a local population of 220,000. Beatrice Eliza Dacomb died 12 Feb 1947 at her residence, 120 South Street, Sth Yarra, aged 83. Her parents were Eliza Evans and Edmund Dacomb; she was born 22 Nov 1863 in Portland. Her sister Clara Thurston Dacomb b 15 Oct 1867 Portland, Victoria; died 19 Oct 1946 aged 79 years at her residence, 120 South Street, Sth Yarra. Their mother Eliza died aged 47 years in 1875; parents = Thomas Evans and Frances Thurston. Their father Edmund Dacomb was a merchant; both parents born in England. They were the 6th and 8th children in the family. Other siblings: Geoffrey (b1860; died Box Hill 1936 aged 76 years), Walter Alfred (b 1857; died Qld 20 Jul 1936), Annie Frances (b. 1862; died Lilydale 1901 aged 39 years), Lydia Harrt (b. 1855; died Balwyn 1925 ged 70 years), Leonard (b. 1866; died 1872 aged 6 years), Emily Maud (b. 1869; died 1874 aged 5 years). In 1933 the method was trialled at Coburg High School and found to have a far superior skill uptake to Pitman. Its simplicity made it particularly useful in South America, Tonga and other Pacific Island countries. Their book 'Web speed-quick shorthand' was published in 1922. Their method lost currency after 1975 when a simplified form of Pitman was adopted by high schools and colleges of advanced education. Bryan TRUEMAN (13 November 1941- ) Born Derbyshire, England worked in Australia 1975–1992 Bryan Trueman studied at Blackpool School of Art in 1962, undertaking Postgraduate studies at Manchester College of Art in 1963. He toured the east coast of America in 1967-8, then returned to England where he started to train himself in Ceramics. Migrating to Australia in 1975 Bryan Trueman lectured at Caulfield Institute of Technology, Melbourne. In 1982 he opened a studio in Warrandyte, Victoria. Bryan Trueman was a visiting lecturer to the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education c1982. He is particularly well-known for his painterly use of glazes to depict the Australian landscape, using the platter as the base form. Bryan Trueman was a visiting lecturer to the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design in 1982. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Jan Feder was an alumna of the Gippsland Campus who studied ceramics on the campus. She passed away in the mid 1980s. Her student peers raised funds to buy ceramic works in her memory. They bought works from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught there. Alan WATT (1941- ) Born Melbourne, Victoria Alan Watt studied at RMIT from 1961 to 1965, and he completed a Fellowship Diploma in 1973-4. Alan Watt travelled and studied pottery in Europe and Japan, and lectured in three State a Colleges in Victoria since 1964. in 1984 Alan Watt was a guest lecturer at Spotkanie held at the Gippsland Campus of Advanced Education.Slab built blackfired stoneware. Norman BAGGALEY (b1937- ) Born in Staffordshire, United Kingdom . Arrived Australia c1978 Norman Baggaley obtained a National Diploma of Design (Painting ) at Stroke on Trent College of Art, UK. His first Australian appointment was from 1978 to 1980 where he was Dean of the School of Arts at Ballarat College of Advanced Education. He spent the next two years as Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design at Prahran College of education. From 1982 until 1991 Baggaley was Professor of Visual Arts and Dean at Prahran CAE, before moving to the Victorian College of the Arts as Associate Professor and Dean of the School of Art at the University of Melbourne Victorian College of Art. Norman Baggaley was Head of School at Ballarat College of Advanced Education. He offered the work for donation with the Art Acquisition Committee commenting that "it was desirable that works from previous heads of School of the Arts be held by the College and that initially the painting could be located in the Art staff room for the first year then displayed else where on campus. Ray WOOLARD (1951-03/2024) Born Ballarat, Victoria Ray Woolard studied at the Ballarat Junior Technical School (c1967); Diploma of Art (Sculpture) at the Ballarat School of Mines/Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education from 1969-1972; a Secondary Art and Craft course at the Ballarat Teachers College c1973; and then the Victorian College of the Arts (Melbourne) 1974-75. He was studying at Ballarat Teachers' College when he completed 'Moose in High Healed Sneakers'. It became a greatly loved artwork on the Gillies Street Campus, and was moved the Mount Helen Campus in 1976 when the Ballarat Teachers' College became part of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. As an artist Ray Woolard worked within the fields of painting, carpentry and sculpture. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Celia Rosser (1930- ) Born Melbourne, Victoria Celia Elizabeth Rosser is a renowned Australian botanical artist, best known for having published The Banksias, a three-volume series of monographs containing watercolour paintings of every Banksia species. She trained in Art at the Melbourne Institute of Technology In 1970, Celia was appointed Science Faculty Artist at Monash University. Four years later she was appointed University Botanical Artist, and began the project of painting every Banksia species. The project took over 25 years to complete, and resulted in the publication of a three volume monograph entitled The Banksias, with accompanying text by Alex George. Publication of the final volume in 2000 represented the first time that such a large genus has been entirely painted. In 1977 Celia Rosser was awarded the Linnaean Society of London's Jill Smythies Award for botanical illustration, and in 1995 was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia. Monash University awarded her an honorary Master of Science degree in 1981, and an honorary PhD in 1999. Banksia Rosserae is the last banksia species discovered and was named after the artist. Since 2002, the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne have awarded the "Celia Rosser Medal for Botanical Art" to outstanding exhibitors at their "The Art of Botanical Illustration" exhibition. Stewart MacFARLANE (1953- ) Born Adelaide, South Australia Stewart MacFarlane entered the South Australian School of Art when 16 years of Age. He traveled to New York in 1975 to study at the School of Visual Arts for 2 years. He remained living and working in New York for several years, receiving residences and fellowships to Skowhegan School of Sculpture and Painting in Maine, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts and the MacDowell Colony, New Hampshire. He exhibited in group shows as well as having three solo exhibitions in New York. Firstly at Razor Gallery, SoHo in 1979, then Belanthi Gallery in 1979 and the Australian Consulate New York in 1983. MacFarlane returned to Australia in 1983, undertaking post-graduate studies at the Victorian College of the Arts in 1984. He taught at The Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (now Federation University Gippsland Campus) in 1885, and the following year moved to Darlinghurst, Sydney to paint. Later that year, he was artist-in-residence in the Besozzo Studio, Italy. In 1987, MacFarlane lived and painted in Mornington, Victoria for several months before receiving an initial residency with the Roswell Artist-in-residence program, New Mexico, for a year. Over the next eight years he moved between Melbourne, Sydney and Roswell, producing one or more solo exhibitions each year. In 1994 he received a residency at The Bemis Center, Omaha, Nebraska, then traveled to Mexico to paint for 3 months. MacFarlane worked in Queensland upon his return, and for the next seven years. John SCURRY (26 August 1947- ) Born Melbourne, Victoria John Scurry studied at the Prahran College of Advanced Education, graduating with a Diploma of Art and Design in 1969. In 1971 he gained a Trained Tertiary Certificate from Hawthorn Institute of Education. From 1973 to 1976 Scurry was a Full time Senior Tutor in the Printmaking Department of the Preston Institute of Technology, becoming Acting Head of the Department in 1976. Working as a Lecturer in the Drawing Department of Prahran College of Advanced Education he then became a Lecturer in Printmaking from 1977 to 1978. In 1979 he began teaching as Full time Lecturer in Printmaking at the Victoria College of the Arts, where in the following years he was Senior Lecturer in Charge of Printmaking in the Faculty of Art and Design (1982-1991, Head of Printmaking School of Art (1991-2003) and Senior Lecturer (2003-2007) before retiring to focus his time on his own work. On 04 August 1987 Lu Bing Qun, Head of English at Nanjing Institute of Education, was farewelled at a dinner at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education, where the calligraphy was presented to Jack Barker. Lu had been working in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences since since the beginning of Semester 1.He participated in and contributed to a unit on Chani in the Bachelor of Arts and a unit in the B.Ed. With Linda Brumley he has translated and recorded all the Chinese gravestones in the Ballaarat New Cemetery. Lu was attached to the Ministry of Education in Melbourne where he spent considerable time preparing Chinese language material for use in Victorian Schools. "The Australian Ski Year Book" was first published in 1928 by the Kosciusko Alpine Club and the Ski Club of Australia, which with the Kiandra Ski Club, were the oldest organisations for skiing in Australia. In later years organisations from Victoria, Tasmania and New Zealand were included. It was published on behalf of N.S.W. Ski Council, Ski Club of Victoria, Ski Council of Tasmania, Ski Council of the Federated N.Z. Mountain Clubs. It aimed to provide an annual record of the sport of ski running in Australia, and of events elsewhere which would be of interest to Australian ski enthusiasts. This edition includes an article about the first "Ski for Light" event held at Falls Creek in September 1980. It took the form of a week of cross-country ski instruction for blind and partially-sighted skiers. The week was organised by Peter Rickards (Recreation Officer at the Association For The Blind in Melbourne). During the week, the participants were introduced to track skiing and touring without tracks, as well as some aspects of downhill technique. Peter Rickards said that the value of good tracks was clearly demonstrated because although bad weather persisted throughout the week, the tracks cut by the Falls Creek Management Committee had made it possible for the partially-sighted skiers to ski unassisted. Coaching was provided by Peter Beckman, with the able assistance of several physical education students from the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. Peter Rickards described the week as "most successful" and said plans were being made to make it an annual event. Leslie DUMBRELL (14 October 1941 - ) Born Melbourne, Victoria Leslie Dumbrell was a pioneer of geometric abstraction in Australia. After completing a Diploma of Art (Painting) at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Melbourne in 1962, Leslie Dumbrell adopted the international style of colour field and hard-edged abstraction. She taught alongside Peter Booth, James Doolin and Alun Leech-Jones at RMIT and Prahran College of Advanced Education. In 1966 Dumbrell was appointed to the Prahran College of Advanced Education teacing with Alan Leach-Jones and Jim Doolin. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection.
