Arthur Henry Miers, pictured in the photograph played for cricket, football and baseball teams in Kew for a number of decades in the first half of the twentieth century. He was born on 22 November 1901, the son of Rodolph Theophilus Miers (1874-1951) and Margaret Frances (Margaretta) Fry (1875-1958). He had two brothers, Rodolph Cecil Miers (1904-80) and Charles Wilfred Miers (1906-88), and a sister Marjorie Elizabeth Miers (1911-84). Historical look (early 20th century) at the administrative requirements for the running of a small country school. The level of accountability was limited to a monthly report and a visit from the District Inspector. This was still in the era where paper reporting was utmost and faster electronic reporting had still to be implemented.The significance of this register is that it highlights the need in the early 1900s for travelling time, to and from, the duties required at a small country town to be detailed closely for a bureaucracy that was relatively isolated within the larger cities of Australia. Decentralisation of not only government but also of industry had not as yet entered the Australian environment. This register also shows that the written word was clearly hand scribed and thereby a more personal form of communication. This was still in the age where you " can tell a lot about a person from their handwriting" Lucy Goonan was Leonie Prime's relation and came from Glen Creek to teach at Mullindolingong School for a couple of years. This banner was one of five banners gifted to the Beechworth Chinese community in recognition of their support of the Hospital and Benevolent Asylum in 1875, from the Carnival Committee. These banners had been purchased in China by a social envoy from Beechworth then presented to the Chinese community during the Beechworth Fine Arts Exhibition in May of that same year, by Donald Fiddes, President of the Ovens District Hospital. The Burke Museum's Chinese Collection presents the history of Chinese settlement in Beechworth from 1856 and its involvement in local community affairs in the second half of the 19th century. In settling in the area they formed their own community with distinctive Chinese cultural traditions, forming their own 'camps' with laid out streets, housing a Temple, Chinese Theatre and restaurants, hotels, stores, gambling houses and dwellings. Members of the Chinese community took an active interest in town affairs and were generous donors to the appeal to build the Ovens District Hospital in 1856/7. The vibrant colours and dynamic graphics of the silk embroidered Chinese banners were a highlight of Beechworth Charitable processions that took place in the main street. Winter Olympics, Innsbruck, Austria. This uniform was donated to the Falls Creek Historical Society by Dr. Howard W. Farrow who was appointed as a Medical Officer for the Australian Olympic Games Team of 1976. Dr. Farrow's father, Dr. Claude Farrow was a founding member of the Edelweiss Ski Club of Australia which was formed in 1947. He was also the Founding President of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs (F.O.V.S.C) which produced the Ski-Horizon journal. Dr. Howard Farrow reported that "the Europeans laughed at us and called us the prisoners". Australia sent a team of eight athletes to Innsbruck, five men and three women. The team consisted of alpine skiers Kim Clifford, David Griff, Robert McIntyre, Joanne Henke and Sally Rodd; figure skaters Billy Schober and Sharon Burley and speed skater Colin Coates, who was competing in his third Winter Olympics. This uniform was designed by famous fashion designer Pru Acton OAM, in response to a request by athletes for a more colourful uniform than the standard green blazer previously worn by the Australian team at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Games.This uniform is significant because it was a modern development of Australian Winter Olympic team uniforms created by a famous Australian fashion designer.The Australian Ski Suit for the 1976 Winter Olympic Games. It has patches of big bold black and white stripes, set horizontally and vertically, with panels of yellow. Inside the silver box is a lock of hair with a handwritten note - Grandfather's hair Sept 9th 1899. A small rectangular ornately engraved and decorated lidded box with a linear pattern overall on the outside of the lid, sides and bottom. It has a scalloped shape on all edges. Inside is a lock of Grandfather's hair wrapped in a folded piece of paper with writing describing who it is from and the date. Inside on the lid bottom of the box are engravings of the maker. Inscribed on the outside of the lid in an ornate rectangular scalloped shape: Presented to Mr. George Birrell MECHANIC By his Fellow Workmen as a token of respect on his leaving for Australia 11th July 1851 GLASGOW Inside the lid top are three stamps: one is a face in a circle, next to it a rectangle with ES and the third is not recognisable. Viola Annie McVicars (1911–1990) was born in Korumburra on 29 April 1911. At the age of 21, she married William John Ayling (1909–1995). After their marriage in 1932, they moved to Kew, initially to 81 Tennyson Street, and later to 180 Pakington Street. A professional tailoress, Viola Ayling was also a talented amateur potter, creating her ceramics at her home in Pakington Street, where she had an internal studio and a handmade, wood-fired brick kiln in her backyard. Following her death in 1990, her studio pottery passed to her daughter, and following the daughter’s death, to her granddaughter. This piece of glazed earthenware is part of a collection of 15 functional and decorative ceramic items donated by Viola’s granddaughter to the collection in 2024.A handmade vase, expertly potted and glazed. The style is representative of Australian ceramic design of the period, particularly that employed by Klytie Pate.Wheel thrown bulbous vase with a narrow neck. Subsequent to potting, the vase has been scraped from head to foot. An overall pink glaze, fading as it has dripped down the exterior has been highlighted with a second irregularly applied green glaze within the ridged surface. The artist has signed the base. Practice bombs could be service bombs, inert loaded with sand, water for chalk/lime solution. Standard practice bombs were painted white overall with two light green bands painted around centre of the tail. The merchant marine has many followers in the area both past and present. Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale offer a great vantage point for ship spotting as they navigate the rip. The Museum has a large collection of paintings of ocean liners of the past which is of great interest to immigrants to this country especially those who travelled by sea in the past. Of significant interest to visitors who visit our display of ocean liners paintings. Migrants from the 50s to the 70s take great pleasure in finding their ship in the display. The wooden pattern is part of a set that is stored in a strong wooden crate and may be part of another similar pattern. It was used at Briggs’ Brass Foundry for making sand casts. The traditional craft of sand casting is over 2000 years old. The handcrafted process produces brass and copper alloy goods that are well suited to marine use; bells, boat hooks, cowls, propellers, handles, lids, rowlocks, hooks, letters, bolts, rail holders, brackets, deck plates, flanges, rudder guides, portholes and covers. Briggs’ Bronze mixture is a copper-based alloy made from local ingots of copper, tin, zinc and lead in carefully measured quantities. The finished product is non-ferrous and can last indefinitely. The crate of patterns was donated by the Briggs family in the early years of Flagstaff Hill, along with other related items such as brassware, tools and machinery. The donated items were displayed in a simulated Brass Foundry in the Village along with other working crafts, trades and services found in a Maritime town. The items were on show from the completion of the building in 1986 until 1994 when the building was repurposed. The patterns represent the trades of foundering and metalwork, both supporting maritime industries such as shipwrights and boatbuilders. Farmers, manufacturers and other local industries also needed the castings made by foundries. The Brass Foundry included a historic Cornish chimney set up as a working model, to tell the story of smelted metal heated in furnaces then be poured into the sand moulds. This chimney was made from specially curved bricks and is now about two-thirds of its full height when originally located at the Grassmere Cheese factory. The craft of sand-casting from carved wooden patterns to create metal is an example of skills from the past that are still used today. The foundry pattern set is significant for its association with brass foundries locally and generally in coastal areas of Victoria. Marine industries such as ship and boat building rely on good quality castings for their machinery, equipment and fittings. Briggs Brass was especially formulated using non-ferrous metals to ensure their longevity. The patterns are associated with the long-running firm Briggs Brass Foundry that specialised in cast goods for the marine industry, ready to supply the needs for once-off or mass-produced items. Their products would have been fitted to sail and steam vessels along coastal Victoria including Warrnambool. Briggs Marine was also a bell-founder specialist and is also associated with the Schomberg Bell at Flagstaff Hill, having restored it to is former state as a fine example of the bell from a luxury migrant vessel from the mid-19th century. Pattern; unpainted, square wooden block with a semi-circle of dowel added to the centre of the side with rounded corners. Three short dowel pegs are inserted on one flat side; one below the semi-circle and one near the lower corners in an overall triangle configuration. Malcolm McKenzie entered the school in 1923 and again in 1929 and left in 1933. A highly competitive sportsman, this trophy was awarded to him as Open and Under 16 champion trophy in 1931.
