Harry Gorry bid for & purchased on internet auction site. The seller's mother was putting these & other items up for auction. Her father/ the seller's grandfather was Dr. Bruno Koening, a German surgeon detained by Allied forces while fleeing New Guinea in 1941. He was detained & sent to be interned in Camp 3, Tatura. There he met the painter Cesare Vagarini & they became friends, thus 4 years later upon the end of the war Vagarini gave the surgeon the two paintings in thanks & in memory of their friendship. Dr Koening then passed the paintings down to his daughter, where they remained in the family for 60 years. The seller's mother decided it was time to sell & was happy that the paintings went to a good home, as the family was until now unaware of the connection between Vagarini and the Tatura Museum. Harry Gorry just happened to notice a familiar name in an auction that he came across by accident & purchased them for our benefit. Painting - watercolour, No 2 Internment Camp, 1945
This painting is for the Museum. It was a gift to me by an ex prisoner, whom I met when he came to Melbourne with Vic, Nicky and others. His name is Luigi Poggioli and he was a most distinguished gentleman, so distinct and well educated that I still remember him clearly (and I do not have a good memory). Perhaps I remember so well because of his kind words in verse on the painting which read :(Translation) "Ungrateful land with handsome race of Italian blood who with their hard work enriched you". Yes I believe I remember so well because of this verse. Extract from a letter from Mrs Tolaini now living in London. She is the Wife of Vittorio Tolaini who was on the Dunera and wrote of his experiences in "Voyage of an Alien" June 1991. Cameron Stewart Baird, VC, MG was a soldier in the Australian Army who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in Afghanistan. Cameron enlisted on 4/1/2000 and was posted to the 4th Battalion (Commando) RAR now known as the 2nd Commando Regiment. He was deployed on 7 operations including Operation TANAGER - Timor Leste in 2001 Operation BASTILLE and FALCONER - Iraq in 2003. Cameron resigned from the ADF in 2004 re enlisting in 2006 and again posted to 2nd Commando Regiment. In 2007 he was promoted to Lance Corporal and deployed on Operation SLIPPER - Afghanistan. He was awarded the Medal for Gallantry. In 2008 he was promoted to Corporal and deployed again on Operation SLIPPER in 2009 2011 and 2013. This painting is dedicated to Patricia Boyd, Robin Boyd's wife, on the reverse side. "Night of Love" was exhibited as a complimentary pair with "Days of Gold" at Laycock's 1965 exhibition at South Yarra Gallery, where Robin Boyd purchased it. It hangs in the living/dining room. "Three of the Players", the 1953 painting by John Brack, hung in this position in the Mark Strizic photograph in Robin Boyd's book "Living in Australia" p 80. McDonald Smith is famous for paining in the tradition of tonal impressionism, with most of his works painted in oil. This influence of the European Impressionist art style is clearly seen in his artwork Flower Study. The notion of light, an impressionist theme, is depicted by the use of a tonal colour palette and varied brushstrokes.
