Box of Slate Pencils (Griffels), The Box, Early to Mid 20th Century
Slate pencils were used extensively in primary schools throughout The Netherlands.These pencils may have belonged to a child who attended school either towards the end of or post WWII when there was a scarcity of paper and books. Rectangular light green cardboard container which slides open to reveal 7 slate pencils. The lid is busily illustrated with scenes of English Victories on Sea and Land including Trafalgar and Waterloo. The upper halves of the slate pencils are covered in paper decorated with various designs.In the left margin of the picture are the words: "Designed in England". Underneath the Trafalgar scene is the quotation: "England expects that every man this day will do his duty." Under the Waterloo scene is the quotation: "Up Guards and at them!" In the right margin are the words: Copyright ENT * STAT HALL. GES.GESCHUTZT. In the centre are the words The Box enclose a crown surmounting a coat of arms which in its turn surmounts crossed slate pencils, then the words SLATE PENCILS and Made in Germany. Wall Tile (Tegel)
Square off-white tile depicting a traditionally clad farmer's wife holding a basket of eggs and watching a hen running from her newly-laid egg. There appears also a proverb written In dialect: "Je kan d'eiers nie telle, vòdat je z'in 't bènnetje eit." (You can't count your eggs till they're in the basket.) A decorative border surrounds the scene and includes © with the initials R.S. The illustrations and wording are in brown. A hook for hanging has been affixed to the back.On the back the tile is inscribed MOSA HOLLAND and bears the numbers 213. -

These tops normally driven by small whips. Thin string was wound around from the bottom up up to the groove. Then a sharp pull on the whip would start the top spinning. It was kept going by whipping. Wooden top, hand turned, traces of red paint. Pear shape with groove at widest diameter, stem at top. At bottom, small iron knob. Slightly damaged.toy -

Example of children's pastimes before the age of TV. Dutch families tended to play boardgames during the long winter nights.It was brought to Australia to continue old customsRectangular white box with black lid on which information is printed in orange. Inside box is a plastic moulded container holding the various puzzle pieces. Puzzle pieces are made from variety of materials including metal, wood and possibly plastic Some items are missing judging by the diagrams.Seven language on top of box all saying "play it anywhere". Images of the various puzzles. The manufacturer logo and name (Jumbo) all featured prominently on side of lid. "Made in Holland by Jumbo, Hausemann & Hoette nv Amsterdam" Has recommended play age of 8 and higher. On sides of lid feature multi-coloured title of the game. Price tag on side of lid shows value of 9.75 The box features on all sides puzzle piece diagrams and also the statement "that the solution can be found in the box" in Dutch, English, German & French. Ornamental container with lid (Sierbusje voor thee of koffie)
The cylindrical silver-plated container has slightly convex lid with central knob. Container and lid are decorated with scenes of country life. The decorations are in bas-relief.The initials D and E ( for Douwe Egberts) are imprinted within a rosette. Also a tag with the letters HH with 90 beside it, possibly a record of the silver-plating process. -

Commemorative Mug (Melkbeker)
In 1898, when Princess Wilhelmina attained her majority, she succeeded her Mother, Queen Emma, who had been Regent for 10 years. Wilhelmina reigned for 50 years until her abdication in favour of her daughter Juliana in 1948.The House of Orange is one of the most popular monarchies in Western democracies. Widespread celebrations accompanied the Abdication/Accession. A souvenir pottery mug handed out to school children in Amsterdam in 1948 to commemorate the abdication of Queen Wilhelmina and the accession to the throne of Queen Juliana. This kind of mug (without a handle) was typically used by children to drink their milk. It is illustrated with the initials of the two Queens surrounded by oranges (for the House of Orange). Blue banners link the bunches of oranges. There is also a depiction of the famous steeple of the Wester Church, the Amsterdam coat of Arms, a ship, a bridge and a typical canal house.Above the W: "Dankbaar voor het verleden" (Grateful for the past) 1898-1948. The other 9 mugs depict provincial coats of arms.The Netherlands coat of arms of two lions holding a shield surmounted by a crown and depicting a lion rampant. Willem-Alexander was the first child born to Crown Princess Beatrix and Prins Claus. Willem-Alexander became King of the Netherlands in 2013 on the abdecation of his mother Queen Beatrix.Cream coloured vase-shaped souvenir mug commemorating birth of Willem-Alexander of Orange on 27 April, 1967.Willem Alexander's coat of arms on an orange, white and blue banner is surmounted by a bouquest of orange branches. Underneath is the inscription 27 April 1967 Willem-Alexander. On the other side the Dutch National flag and an Orange Banner are crossed against the background of a colourful tree. -

The declaration was noticed in an antique shop by a Dutch antique dealer who purchased it and donated it to the DAHC.Official declaration establishing the Dutch Consulate in Melbourne. The framed declaration is signed by the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Dutch Queen, Wilhemina of Orange, on 9 May 1924.Dated: 9 Mei negentien vier en twintig ( 9 May 1924 ) and signed by Queen Wilhelmina. Has creases that somebody tried to fix with white-out. -

Cups are individually marked 5139(a) to 5139(f). Each carries 2 different blue-painted illustrations of regional costumes: (a and b) Volendam and Marken; (c and e) Staphorst and Nunspeet; (d and f) Middelburg and Spakenburg. Saucers are marked 5139(g) to 5139(l) and are plain white.Four cups carry the number 16 stamped on the bottom and two the number 15. -

Blue and white hand-painted ashtray with three shallow grooves on rim for resting cigarettes. The scalloped rim is also decorated with a blue catkin branch. In the centre circle is a picture of a cafe and the inscription "12 ½ Jaar Cafe Tromp".On the reverse is painted; "Handpainted Delft Blue made in Holland". -

Colourfully painted saucer showing the Mint in Amsterdam with flower market in the foreground and the words "Tulpen uit Amsterdam" beside the Dutch flag on one of the stalls.'De Munt Amsterdam Holland' on main picture. Kruikezeiker (Jug Pisser) Statue
A link to the folkloric custom that the poor sold their urine to the wool industry where it was used in wool washing. Current depictions of a stereotypical Kruikezeiker are based on the Tilburg sculpture created by Henk Smulders (1925-1994). Said statue is located on Nieuwlandstraat, Tilburg. Tilburg has embraced this legend and named itself "Kruikezeiker Stad" (Jug City). The legend is brought to the fore during Karneval celebrations. It is a symbol of the city. Bronze (?) male figure depicting him about to fill a jug with his urine. His right hand lifts his garment while he holds the jug in his left. Herring Cart (haringkarretje)
Souvenir, home made with jigsaw, celebrating Dutch national delicacy. These carts are seen in streets and markets throughout the Netherlands during herring season.Balsa wood model of a herring cart with 2 spoked wheels. Main body has two compartments covered with circular lids, surmounted by rack holding 3 herring barrels in the Dutch national colours of red ,white and blue. At top of rack a fish-shaped advertising salt and sour herrings. Main body also has a support at both ends and a handle for pushing the cart. At other end is preparation area with a hole for discarding fish waste into the bucket which is hanging below. A checked tea towel hangs off the preparation area. Next to the cart is white pot with a lid possibly for holding chopped onions. -

Cigar Mould (Sigaren Plank), early 20th Century
Dutch cigar industry was prominent in the eastern part of Noord Brabant in towns like Helmond.Dutch colonial history. Cigar smoking was popular amongst Dutch men5784(a) and 5784 (b) are two pieces made of wood (presumed to be pine). 20 slots to mould the cigars. Bottom piece has deeper slots for the cigars. The two pieces are not solid pieces of wood. The bottom piece is made from two boards/pieces of wood stuck together with aeration space left in between. The top piece has 20 individual moulds/slot glued on. The two pieces can be locked in via three wooden pegs into their corresponding slots On the back of the lower board/piece - there are two holes lined with metal rings (diameter of 1cm) Note that the size given applies when the two pieces are fitted together.On the top board - There is stamped the numeral "53".
