These tops normally driven by small whips. Thin string was wound around from the bottom up up to the groove. Then a sharp pull on the whip would start the top spinning. It was kept going by whipping.

Physical description

Wooden top, hand turned, traces of red paint. Pear shape with groove at widest diameter, stem at top.
At bottom, small iron knob. Slightly damaged.
