Cap RAN sailors with HMAS tallybandheadgear, c1970's, ran

Item in the collection re William Anthony (Bill) Theodore DSM. The Sailor is Willam Anthony Theodore DSM, enlisted on 2.9.1940 in the RAN No PM2981. He served in the Seige of Tobruk, Greece, Crete, Matapan, Singapore, Pacific Islands, New Guinea to the Phillipine's. The HMAS Vendetta he was sailing on made 39 trips into Tobruk Harbour during the siege. In October 1941 so many bombs were dropped around the Vendetta that her Boilers and Engines shifted on their mountings and was ordered to Singapore for repairs. After Bill served on HMAS Arunta and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for "Gallantry, Skill and Devotion to Duty" during the Assault Operations at Lingayen Gulf. Bill was discharged from the RAN on 21.11.1945. From 1956 - 1995 over specific years Bill held the positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer & Welfare Officer of the "Bendigo Rats of Tobruk Association". Supporters of the Mission often made their homes and gardens available as venue for Christmas Boxing day and Cup day events or picnics. On Boxing Day 1920 around 100 men were welcomed by Mr and Mrs Duckett on the grounds of the home Riversdale. This sailor's collar is part of a naval uniform. It once belonged to R S Wallace, who served in the RAN (Royal Australian Navy) and on the HMAS Warrnambool for three years. After the war he made several ship models including the sailing ship Cutty Sark. From January 1857 the Australian Navy uniform was formally established. The uniform, referred to as a 'sailor's suit', includes a blue flap collar such as this one. Sailors in the Royal Australian Navy wore collars of this design from the early 20th century. The rating personnel of the Royal Canadian Navy were issued with a very similar collar from 1910 to the 1950s. The blue denim collars were buttoned or died inside their tops with the back and the striped portion of the front flaps showing.The square sailor's collar represents the uniform of a rating sailor in the Royal Australian Navy in the early to mid-20th century, connecting it to the maritime history of Australia and the evolution of the uniform of the navy. The collar is the only one in this museum's collection and is connected to a sailor who service in the RAN on the HMAS Warrnambool for three years.Sailor's collar. A square collar of blue cotton fabric with three flaps or strips. Three white stripes make a border on the outside edges and two flaps; the centre flap that has no stripes. There is an inscription. The underside is lined with white cotton fabric that has thin blue stripes. Tapes are attached for fastening the collar. The Royal Australian Navy collar once belonged to R S Wallace."R.S. David James Wallace HAMILTON. Prior to WW1 he had 6 years service in the RAN until his time expired. He enlisted in the AIF No 329 in the 14th Batt Machine Gun section on 10.9.1914 age 24 years 11 months. Promoted to Cpl 4.12.1914, embarked for Egypt 22.12.1914, embark for Gallipoli 12.4.1915, WIA 19.5.1915 SW Left Thigh, WIA 2nd occasion 20.8.1915 GSW to Back, embark for France 7.6.1916, promoted to Sgt 22.8.1916, transfer to 12th MG Coy 23.8.1916, promoted to W.O 20.10.1916, promoted to 2nd Lieut 24.3.1917, KIA Belgium 7.6.1917.
